Von's Steakhouse & Oyster Bar Ratings and Reviews
We have dined here at least twice before, once for a family gathering and once for a family birthday. We chose Vons as we wanted a quieter restaurant in which to visit and because we enjoyed our previous experiences. We were so disappointed to see how the quality of food and attention to detail has diminished. The person who greeted us was wearing a red flannel shirt, perhaps because it was rodeo weekend. She was cursory, not welcoming, seeing if we had a reservation. Made us think that we certainly didn’t need to worry about dressing up to go to dinner.Even though the restaurant was not full on a Sunday night, (November 12) the waiter had a loud voice so every transaction with other tables could be heard. The prime rib was grisly, which seems pretty unheard of, considering the cut of beef. The tenderloins were tasty, but squished and tired looking, not a thick cut. The sweet potatoes on the side on both our plates were not hot. (There were 4 of us). All the hot foods presented could have been hotter on hot plates.
We are from out of province so the biggest insult was the pre-programmed 20% tip!!! Is this the norm in Edmonton?
Also, on the rating scale above, I rated everything on the lowest scale, but I have no way of knowing whether the lowest star is on the left or not. Your form needs more instructions.
It's been a while since I wanted to visit Von's but I just didn't have the perfect excuse. Finally I got one! Birthday surprise dinner!
I booked our table trough open table and everything went as planned. I got a phone call the day before to confirm the reservation and to ultimate details.
We got a nice table for two, close to the fireplace, lighted by a niche alcohol candle and a perfect set up.
We started with 8oz of red wine, Catena from Mendoza, followed by three bacon wrapped scallops with a wasabi-spiked cocktail sauce, not too spicy not too mild.
We ordered a Prime Rib (17 hours to be ready as per the server) with red-skinned mashed potatoes and a New York Striploin with fries and we decide to share a side of asparagus.
Both plates were delicious, every bite was perfectly cooked.
As I requested on the reservation, the server came with an slice of cake and a nice sparkler birthday candles decorated by strawberry syrup.
Before leaving we walked through the launch just to check it and looks like its a nice as well.
Oysters specials are Mon - Fri 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm & all night on Sundays at the lounge.
Half price bottle of wine on Mondays; great way to start the week for sure!
We will come back to try the Oysters for sure and enjoy the lounge area and a good Caesar with them!
We booked dinner at Von’s as our daughter was in town visiting and wanted to take her someplace special. It was a home run. Our server was more than knowledgeable explaining the extensive oyster selection and the meals themselves were perfect from appetizers through to desert.
The occasion was a birthday. His first impression was this was about to be the ultimate meal. Mine was this is going to be his ultimate meal. We sat by the fire. Had great conversation went down memory lane.... a really good experience overall. Great food and drinks. Great way to end the day. Was really good meal. Somewhat expensive for what it was. Very good nonetheless.
We originally booked three tables to accommodate our group of almost 20. The hostess called to confirm the reservation and offered their large private space upstairs for only $35. Sold! Our group was served by a single waiter, whose name escapes me :( He was excellent. He kept the water full and the beverages coming. The appetizers were good as far as I know. Unfortunately we had consistent issues with the main dishes. Several people ordered the prime rib which was universally difficult to cut and chew; Normally the fat is flavor, but this time the fat was floss. Also, the Yorkshire pudding included with the prime rib was closer to a bagel in texture and density. Two ordered the steak Oscar. On both dishes the seafood was over-cooked and one steak was well-done instead of medium as ordered. On the upside, the vegetables were delicious on all our plates. I spoke to the manager who was receptive to our feedback. In the interest of customer service he provided a discount on the meals. Our group appreciated the manager's response and many indicated they would be willing to return. This is a great example of how customer service should be. My thanks to the manager for turning a potential loss into a future visit.
We hadn't been to Von's in some time, but decided a good steak house was in order for a visit with old friends. It was a slow evening for them, but then Tuesday's aren't known as prime dining nights. The food was delicious, and varied in presentation, and the high quality deserts definitely did the job.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary on the weekend. We had a fantastic time! We had oysters, mussels, mushrooms, prime rib, and some champagne! We loved everything, it was so delicious. Everything was cooked perfectly! Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly! We will definitely be back again.
One person had the special which was alright however 3 patrons had prime rib, 2 were cold and had a tough outside skin (med rare) and one was not even close to med rare(extremely rare) The main entrees do not even come with complimentary salad or vegetables and I feel for the price, it was not worth to cost of the meals. the service was amazing though.
Our waitress was excellent! We went from dining room to bar for oyster bar and then back to dining room ( we had underage kids with us). The staff was very accommodating. The bartenders were great and very friendly and made a mean martini! Thanks for a great dinner!
My girlfriend and I occasioanlly dine at Vons Steakhouse for special occasions and in the past we've always considered Vons to be one of our favourite restaurants for a Prime Rib. Our visit, however, was quite disappointing as it seemed that the overall quality of the food has slowly decreased with every visit.
Our disappointment lies in our overall experience with the food and quality. First of all, the bread we were given at the beginning was stale , hard, and not fresh. For this visit as with all our other visits, we ordered the, "17 Hour "AAA" Prime Rib 14 oz". When the dish arrived, right off the bat we noticed that the horseraddish was not spicy at all. This was one of our favourite parts of this dish and so we asked the waitress about it. She came back after asking the kitchen and said that they ran out and ordered an alternative. I feel as though this should have been mentioned to use before hand, rather than catching us off guard and leaving us disappointed. The pudding bread was also stale and not fresh, however, the most disappointing part of this dish was our beloved Prime Rib. It was not seasoned one bit. During our last visit, our complaint was that it was too salty (over seasoned). This time around, it seems they had forgotten to season it at all. The Prime Rib was definitely under cooked, and closer to rare than a medium rare. There were an incredible amount of chew to the meat and stringy fat which we did not experience last time. The overall quality of the meat did not reflect it's price of $39 that's for sure.
This experience earned a 4 star for service as the waitress was accommodating and even tried to bring over an alternative to our horseradish hoping it would provide a little more kick. The food however was not good, and sadly I don't think we will be coming back to this restaurant again. It's had it's time, but unless they improve on the quality of their food, we cannot recommend this place.
I have been to Von's on numerous occasions and have always had stellar service and fantastic food. Maybe it was an off day because the order in which we received our food was in reverse during our pre theater light dinner on a Sunday @ 6PM. The booth seating requested as per reservation was not available. All not terrible but a departure from the usual. The oyster selection for buck a shuck was less than usual. The best part of the shared meal was the steak tartar. Will be back again. Hopefully my disappointment from this visit will not be repeated.
I went on a Saturday at 6PM, and got busy right after that, so lucky me. The atmosphere was good and the server was friendly. When the restaurant got busy you could tell that the server was acting more distracted but still nothing to be concerned about. The steaks were delicious, and so were the desserts. Lovely experience, will definitely go back.
As it had been a few years since we had visited your establishment, it was nice to see that the atmosphere and the people working their are still very friendly, professional, and above all the hospitality and the meal served were outstanding. Our visit here put the cap on a very special day, our 44th wedding anniversary. Thank-You.
For our 30th anniversary dinner, we started with the aptly named "colosssal" shrimp cocktail, which was delicious. My wife had the filet oscar; the filet was fantastic, but there was a pinch extra salt in the seafood. My prime rib was perfect, accompanied by a large, tasty Yorkshire. The special cheese potato selection was offered at an extra $6 (should have been at no charge, considering the menu prices). We were treated to a complementary dessert. Service was impeccable. We will continue to frequent this great restaurant for our special occasions! Try it, and grab a table near the glorious fireplace!
We went for a nice sunday dinner with family. We enjoyed the cozy feeling of dining fireside and the service was exemplary. Our steaks were done perfectly and the vegetables were the best . Topped off with a decent wine list and dessert that was also top notch. I would definitely recommend dining here. It was not super cheap but a good value for your dollar.
Service was not up to par. It took ten minutes for our waitress to come to our table. When our drinks came, refills were rare (my wife ordered a pop). I had ordered a second drink which never came, she didn't realize until the end, so I obviously cancelled it. The waitress also spilled water on my mother-in-law's back and seat. My steak came out rare instead of medium rare, which isn't a big deal because I'm not too turned off by rare.
I have been to Von's a few times and the service always seems to be lacklustre, but the food is excellent.
Vons is our go to. We love it. Been here multiple times and nothing bad to say. Any issues arise and they are corrected instantly. My wifey even dropped a massive scallop on the floor and we were treated to 2 replacements. Go here and eat. Seriously. Hardware grill, Ruth's Chris and range road got nothing on Vons. number 1 in edmonton.
