Vivolo, the family name, long associated with fine dining and Italian cuisine, is located at 140 east 74th street, New York. Vivolo, established in 1977 by owner Angelo Vivolo, is nestled in a charming 1875 townhouse occupying two floors.

You enter into a rich English redwood paneled dining room and antique oak bar with a working fireplace. Ceilings beamed with dark wood create an overall intimate, friendly and romantic atmosphere. A "café" alcove offers several secluded tables or the perfect setting for dinners for 10.

The second floor of Vivolo has the look of a turn-of-the-century parlor with a gold leaf trimmed ceiling and working fireplace. The parlor floor is also a favorite for private parties.

The manager was incredibly rude and it's very doubtful that any of us would go there again.

Classy with a feel of being a part of the family while still being someone special. A wonderful “tablecloth” type of upper east side of the neighborhood restaurant. Love the food, service, and ambiance. I hope that they charge enough. We will always come back again.

Lovely dark wood paneled intimate setting. The fireplace would be nice if it had been cold. Service was attentive and they have a reasonable prix fix menu. Unfortunately one of the items on it was going to be another hour before it was ready to serve. We ordered off the main menu. The arugula salad was good but the mussels were horribly fishy smelling and so bad I had to send them back. I got another appetizer that was fine but also had some of the same meatballs as my main course selection and the sauce was exactly the same. Too much sameness. My partners calf liver and onions were enjoyable. A wine we wanted to order was not available though. A bit spendy for the quality we felt. Really nothing special overall.

Somehow, whenever I get a craving for fresh, well-prepared Italian food, I return to Vivolo. Its ambiance is warm and inviting, with beautiful wood-paneled walls and, in winter, a warming fireplace. The menu is lovely. You won't find "experimental" cuisine here, but if you want fork-tender cold-poached salmon or the Eggplant Parmesan you've been too lazy to make at home, this is the place you want to be. Sauces are freshly made in house. Whatever you order is cooked to perfection, no more/no less. The waitstaff is lovely (with the exception of one particularly dour-faced waitperson who announced the service of my entree by the wrong name, and who didn't seem to care whether or not anyone was there at all. I'm sure he won't last long). If you're looking for a place where the waitstaff says "Hey guys! What can I can I get fer ya?" this isn't for you. If you want an "Hello, my name is Calvin and I will be attending to your dining experience this evening," it's not for you. This is a just perfectly lovely place with great food that's affordable (perhaps slightly above), and a pleasure to be in.

The place is extremely small, extremely crowded- they should have half the amount of tables, and maitre d is obnoxious. We will never go there again. I believe it is a fire hazard. Food was acceptable.

Vivolo is a quaint little restaurant tucked away in the UES with a cozy interior and modest Italian food selections. The food was substantial in portion and decent in quality; it was served fresh to our table, but the flavors were good but not impressive. The service was good - our waiter was always available, accessible, and welcoming. Overall, the experience was pleasant and enjoyable for a family lunch out; Vivolo serves affordable, semi-formal Italian food in a neighborhood known for pricy Italian selections, making it a welcome location for a relaxed meal in the upper east side.

This is a very pretty, friendly restaurant. The wine list is great and very reasonable. Unfortunately, though the food is also well-priced, it is not of the same caliber and is at times indigestible. I'm not sure what is wrong; perhaps there is a weak freezer, but management should check into it. Twice I have been there and two different people have gotten indigestion. The place is always full, so I assume this is an occasional problem.

Was disappointed as we selected this restaurant for restaurant week, however the waiter said they weren’t participating until tomorrow. Wish they were more transparent with this on their website and open table.

Vivolo has been around for decades and has shown its staying power while so many other restaurants of its ilk in the neighborhood have come and gone. The menu is appealing, the food is dependably good, the prices are appropriate, and the service is excellent. Even though the restaurant is small (two floors of a town house) and the tables quite close together, the noise level remains sufficiently low to permit easy conversation, so it is the perfect spot for a pleasant evening with a friend (or friends), a colleague or a spouse. It is a neighborhood favorite.

Setting is comfortable and perhaps romantic. New Year’s Eve, after all.

The salads were first rate as was the dessert but everything in between, the main courses were unmemorable. My wife’s chicken was somewhat dry. My veal was terrible. Three small medallions, one that was the consistency of a rubber band with roasted potatoes that were, perhaps, warm, certainly not not hot, as they should have been.

What more can I say.

The food was MUCH better than the service which was amateurish. They asked who had what when the food came to the table, did not bring bread when requested, had to ask twice for stuff. Ashamed because the food was very good.

This place felt like a tradition on the first visit. Warmly greeted into the wood-paneled room of an old townhouse, the staff was welcoming and accommodating. The menu was diverse and affordable, ditto the wine list. The food was delivered in perfect time and was delicious. Lots of good reviews brought me here with out of town guests who I wanted to impress. I assumed the bad reviews were written by sour people difficult to please - I was right. It was a lovely evening and I'd recommend it in a NY minute.

Very nice neighborhood restaurant. They have a prix fixe menu before 6:30pm but you have to ask for it...they don't offer it. The tables are close and unfortunately we had a loud party next to us in the holiday spirit. But nothing that was the restaurant's fault. Good Italian food with creative dishes. Would definitely return.
