Went out for special date. Server never checked on us once we got entree. He forgot sugars we asked for, as well as the salad drsg.
Ordered the $49 steak...had passport card to get 1 free. This is NOT a $50 steak. $25 'maybe'. My garlic mashed were lukewarm. Only reason I didn't complain to mgr was the buy one get one free. Absolutely not a $110 per tab place.
Was disappointed the website was different than what was presented at the actual restaurant. Food was fair, service good. Food was very good.
Such a disappointment. Food was horrible. I mean horrible. Service was verrrryyyyyy slow. Not going back.
This is a new spot and this is very promising. The hibiscus margarita was the best I've ever had! I ordered the spicy shrimp and it wasn't as fancy as I had hoped it would be. The menu describes their items to appeal to foodies looking for something different and South American, but the food came out as slightly upscale Mexican food. The server was very, very attentive and food came out in a timely manner and each course came out hot and good. The dessert was amazing, it was little cinnamon donuts. Order it!
Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome
Used my Groupon for the 4 course dinner for 2. The Groupon comes with 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 dessert and 2 cocktails. We had the fried artichoke, seafood paella, filet mignon, ricotta cheesecake and for cocktails we had the strawberry mule and a class for sonoma merlot. The food was fantastic. The filet mignon was cooked exactly how we liked it, medium rare. Everything from the appetizer to the dessert to the drinks were fabulous. Our server Marcie was pleasant and enjoyable. We went on a Sunday afternoon at 5pm. Perfect time to have dinner. No crowds. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather. We will definitely be returning.
The food was okay, but the ambiance was fair. We were the only people there for dinner at 6pm on a Friday night with a couple of individuals at the bar. The music was annoyingly loud and the service was slow, especially considering there was more staff there than diners. Can't recommend this.
We celebrated my daughters 21st birthday there - the atmosphere was wonderful, the drinks were great and the food was outstanding. The service was really good the only down side was that the server did not want to split the bill so we had to do it which was not much fun - but all in all it was a great experience. We had a choice to eat inside or outside and really was a wonderful a nice place for dinner.
Me and my wife discover that place by accident on Trip Advisor, but it was a big surprise. The service is also very nice with a big "smile". Next time we will go to San Diego, our first stop will be there.
Been to brunch here twice and both times was very satisfied. Bottomless mimosa's, good food, & great service. Problem is you lose track of time :)
we were there on a Sunday, place was quiet and not many people. I can see it being a hopping place, they have a nice bar and good location. Food was Ok, nothing to write home about, but probably good for an happy hour.
I cant remember our waitress' name but she was the best! Honestly, haven't had that good of service in a long time. She even walked next door to get us coffee (it was 10 pm and my girlfriend likes to have coffee for desert). She was full of jokes and playful sarcasm and vibed with our whole table of 6 really well. Food also amazing. I left sttuuuufffffffffedd. Good times.
More of a bar than a restaurant. Noisy ambiance. Had a view of the people at the bar's backside. Food was quite tasty, enjoyed the traditional paella. Young person's place.
The food wasgreat and the service was amazing thank you SAra u totally rocked
We came here for a girls night out before a show and a nice time. The food was very good and the ambiance was great. However, I do feel the food was very overpriced for what you get.
We ordered 2 cocktails, one with 3 rums & a strawberry something drink? The rum cocktail was fantastic & the strawberry drink was merely sugared water: no alcohol, no flavor. For the appetizer, we had the Argentinian steak on toast. The meat was grilled perfectly. The unexpected spicy pepper was in harmony with crunch of the toast & the chimichurri sauce. Next, we ordered the sea bass & the seafood paella. The presentation of the sea bass was wonderful & colorful. Sadly, the fish was not cooked through and through. The seafood paella had a very interesting mix of squid, fish, mussels, shrimps and rice. The flavor was good but the rice was too gluey & thick. Where was the garlic, olive oil and saffron ? We ordered the flan as dessert. It was covered with cheap whipped cream. We simply put it aside. The flan was made with heavy, heavy cream custard. It was too many calories without the desired taste!!
Not fit for a foodie- There are so many other choices to eat in Gas Lamp. I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money. Oh and one more thing, WAY over priced!!!
Wanted to have my birthday party here for happy hour since tapas/latin style is my favorite. I came once before and it was cute, had Spanish music playing and had a good vibe. This time was not the same. My friends and I were excited about the tapas menu which apparently had very recently changed (after I made a reservation), happy hour went from from 3-7 to 3-6 and the music was no where near latin, 80's I believe. For a normal happy hour like anywhere else downtown it was great, we were just looking for something more with the advertised ambiance.
Our food were not served all at the same time. Some of us waited 15 minutes while others in our party were already served. Our paella were served in bowl instead of the plate. Other people who ordered the same dish in different tables were served on a plate. Overall I do not recommend this restaurant.
Yummy Latin themed meals. The ceviche like freebie, calamari and seafood paella were deliciously prepared and served. My wife had the seared tuna atop quinoa, excellently done and we shared a flan of creative delectability. We will visit again.
We took my in-laws out for a special dinner while they were in town visiting. We all have very different tastes so it can be challenging finding a restaurant everyone loves. Viva did it for us. Everyone was able to find something on the menu they loved. The food was amazing. We will definitely be back.
Okay. We ordered different kinds of drink from cocktail to drat beer. Caipirinha and Sangria was soso, but not impressive.
Friendly service, fun atmosphere, good location, upbeat, however, overpriced, music was too noisy to have a conversation.
A great spot for a drink before the club or Sunday Brunch. If you like sports, they have a nice 4 screen TV set-up.
My wife and I went to Viva Bar + Kitchen last night and had a wonderful and refreshing experience. First of all the the Bar and Kitchen is located in the San Diego Gas Lamp district, just 1 block from the Historic Balboa Theater. It was very convenient to have dinner and some drinks at the Viva Bar + Kitchen before we attended " The Tenors " concert at the Balboa Theater that night. Our Server Melissa had one of the nicest, smiling, and bubbly personalities, I have ever seen. We would go back to Viva Bar + Kitchen just because of Melissa's professional and excellent service. She was AWESOME ! Every food item we enjoyed on our 4 course meal was excellent. The dinner started off with a very tasty Chef's Special Amuse-Bouche. Next was Tapas appetizer of Chef's Charcuterie Board, which included a Chef's Selection of ArtisanCheeses, Cured Meats, and Crostini, was so tasty. Especially the Carmelized Onion and Cranberry goat milk cheeses. My wife and had the Argentinian Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce, Braised Potatoes, and a delicious Corn Ratatouille. For Dessert we had the Churro Bites, which was Deep Fried Dough, with Cinnamon Sugar and House Caramel and Chocolate Dipping Sauces. We also enjoyed the house made Flan. Both desserts were delicious ! After our dinner, the Viva Bar + Kitchen Manager Beau came over to our table to see how our meal was, and to tell us a little about the history of the Bar + Kitchen. The Bar + Kitchen also has some very nice out door seating to enjoy if you wish. The next time you are in the down town Gas Lamp area of San Diego, drop in and visit the Viva Bar + Kitchen, it will be well worth the visit !
I went to viva with a party of five. Two people loved their food (paella and shrimp tacos), two found theirs so-so (carnitas) and one just got a drink that she said was good but you could find it in any restaurant. They mixed up two of our drinks And remade one but didn't comp either and the waitress couldn't answer some simple questions about the menu, like what was included with a dish. Based on the experience, I would not tell people not to go to the restaurant but I wouldn't recommend it either.
Love the bbq lamb sliders and the sangria! The sea bass was terrific too!! Did not go away hungry!!
The amount of mushrooms!!! So many mushrooms!!!
waited 20 minutes for the check as the server shot the breeze with the guys in the kitchen. get it together.
Fabulous food, spectacular service and audacious ambiance. Can't wait to go back.
I really loved the vibe of this bar. Was able to easily make reservations for 7 on a busy Saturday night, and they were quick to seat us on arrival. We got our first round of drinks and waters out in a timely manner, though appetizers were a little slow to come out or missed and came out much later. Communication seemed to be lacking a little between the multiple servers and kitchen.
Food was good but not amazing for the prices. Lobster tacos were yummy but $22 for three small tortillas filled with maybe 3 small chunks of lobster each... not worth it for the price, as it was hardly filling. Viva fries were very standard fries with a $7 price tag. Chips and guac are hard to mess up, but needed way more chips. We all ordered tacos and none of us really felt like that was a worthy, filling meal option for the price. Carne fries were the only thing that I can say were exceptional, I wish we had all ordered our own order because I know we would have ALL been satisfied at just having that.
Overall, the atmosphere was lovely and I really liked the string-lights with the big windows overlooking a bustling downtown. Its a beautiful establishment. I would advise giving yourself plenty of time here, as in, not visiting an hour before a show or something like that. We thought we had given ourselves enough time but had to rush around to get the bill and get off to our show on time. Noise level is high so don't come here for a quiet conversation over dinner on a weekend; however if you are in the party mood, its a great place to get your night started, get your energy up and get your buzz on. $6 mules, awesome Saturday night special, I hope you keep it up because I'll come back for that. :)
Excellent service the manager Daniel and waiter Derrick went above and beyond to accommodate us on our dinner experience.. Excellent attitude..would recommend and go back
Really liked the seafood Paella and the carnitas tacos - service however was poor - waiter even completely forgot to bring a second glass of wine we ordered. Since the restaurant is right across from Horton in the middle of everything an extremely high level of noise from the bar sort of comes with the territory but it was annoying at times .
Booked this through an online coupon offer. Wow! Were were impressed with the food!! Jessica our server was very attentive and friendly. Our bottomless mimosas were never empty and she was there to pour every single glass for us! I had the Carnitas benedict and my husband the pollo Torta. The eggs on my benedict were some of the best eggs I have ever had. They were Perfectly cooked!! Hats off to the chef who prepared those!! The carnitas had great flavor, it was an excellent dish. My husband loved his torta as much as I enjoyed my plate. These plates aren't just pretty, they taste as good as they look!! This was such a great experience! We hope to go back very soon!
Had a fabulous time at Viva Bar and Kitchen- so glad we found this place. We will definitely be back!
Great tasting food! Unique plating. Steak bite appetizer awesome
We had brunch at Viva last Sunday and had a great time. The sevice was outstanding and the food was very good. Just not enough. We also appreciated the manager coming by the table to see how we were doing.
The only somewhat negative comment I might have is that the noise coming from the bar was quite loud.
Food and drinks are not good. We don't recommend it. Save your $. Eat anywhere else at Gaslamp qtr.
Service just ok.
We arrived at the restaurant at 4:45 and were promptly seated for our 5:00 reservation. We chose the Fixed price menu and waited 45 minutes for the Amuse-bouche. At that point we informed the waitstaff that we had tickets for a performance at 7pm and needed to leave by 6:30. They said that that would be no problem, but it took another half hour to get our salad and soup. The staff was unfailingly polite and the food was fantastic both in taste and presentation, but very very slow. We were able to leave by 6:30, but it took constant reminders to the waitstaff in order to do it. It was Valentine's Day and perhaps the restaurant wanted people to feel comfortable taking their time, but we didn't have all evening.
Great little gem in The Gaslamp. Bottomless mimosas available for brunch, service is great and I highly recommend the Caritas Hash and Eggs. I highly recommend Viva Bar + Kitchen!
Love the food. We had the skirt steak and sea bass, both were perfectly cooked.
Hostess did her homework, guessed my name immediately when i said i had a reservation. Don't think that's ever happened before.
Large TV's over the bar can be distracting, I have to sit with my back to them or else I keep looking at them. Not a bad thing if your dining companions aren't the best, but I liked mine.
