VITAE Ratings and Reviews
Food was lovely but the restaurant was out of some wines and did not have the venison either which was disappointing. Too many customers for too few staff so you did not feel looked after at all and had to ask constantly for some acknowledgment of your precence
We had a little snafu with our reservation. I made a 1 PM on Open Table and called to see if 1245 would work; they said come any time between 1230-1. When we checked in at 1245, the reservation had been cancelled. We had to wait 10 mins or so for a table. When we did sit down, though, the chef sent complimentary amuse bouche so that was nice. The food was really great for midtown and the ambience was suitable for a business lunch. You could have a conversation and the decor was nice. I will be back for work lunches!!
My lobster and crab cannelloni was less than desirable. The pasta had the texture of a grainy tortilla and was gray in color. Was hoping for a soft envelope of deliciousness. I had to open it and remove the seafood and ask for a side of drawn butter just to finish it. The cocktails were great but not enough to return. Disappointing.
Service and food were excellent I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Virae for special occasions, lunch or dinner. The value given this is NYC was a very pleasant surprise with no quality compromise. I have entertained clients throughout my 40-year career and I would rank this experience in the top tier.
I was overall quite pleased with Vitae. It sits on a quiet block near the theatre district, though I was there for a business meal with two clients. Service was good, the decor was good and perhaps, best of all, it is a rare find inasmuch as it is QUIET -- I find that there are very few restaurants these days that don't require shouting just to connect with the person sitting opposite you at the same table. So it was refreshing to be somewhere we could speak in normal tones and hear each other.
Service was very good and attentive without being overbearing. As for the food, it was all fine -- nothing super special, but nothing wrong with anything either. My tuna crudo appetizer was my highlight. My sea scallops entree was a bit overly-salted, though it sat in a tasty broth. My colleagues had salmon and halibut, respectively, and were pleased.
My only knock on the restaurant is this: This is a fairly upscale restaurant, yet there was no coat check, so people's coats sat on the backs of their chairs, which doesn't match a restaurant of this caliber (or price point). To boot, the seats are not conducive to holding coats, so at least twice, I saw coats fall to the floor off the backs of chairs. Easily fixed, and it should be.
I'd try Vitae again, and with some minor adjustments, this could easily move from a 3 to 4 in my ratings book.
We arrived on time. Ordered drinks and asked that the appetizers were not delivered until we had finished the aperetif. Drinks arrived no problem. Then our waitress disappeared. After about 30 mins someone asks us if we would like to see the desert menu....
After about another 10 minutes nothing had happened so we left.
Very poor service. The restaurant wasnt even busy so no excuse whatsoever.
Got together with friends and had a table on the mezzanine level...which is where I'd recommend sitting. It's much quieter than downstairs, and nice to look out over the rest of the restaurant. I had the best trout I've ever put in my mouth, a sentiment echoed by one of my fellow diners who had ordered the same dish, and the beet salad with arugula and goat cheese was lovely to look at and devour. Highly recommend, though it is not an inexpensive night out.
The noise level made it virtually impossible to have a conversation. The tables are extremely close together. The service was inattentive (had to ask several times for grated cheese for the pasta; by the time it came the pasta was cold. The food was very good but the overall ambience defeated the purpose of a friends get -together
A four day visit to NYC and Hubbies 69th Birthday! Great food, special birthday appetizer for him and fun desserts with chocolate wishes. Very nice. I would love to give Vitae an overall 5 stars but the noise level was impossible. It was very hard to talk with each other....but the service and food were very good.
The entire staff was friendly and courteous making our dining experience fabulous. That made celebrating my special B-day such a pleasure with complementary surprise small starter tasters, gorgeous dessert and a "goodie gift bag" to take home.
Thank you all for such a great visit.
The food was excellent. The service, while friendly, was inexcusably inattentaive and slow. It was slow getting started, they never checked our meal and we sat with empty plates until we finally asked for the check which was delivered with the empty plates still in the table.
If they were more attentive, we problay would have had dessert and coffee. I am aggravated that I still left them a decent tip; less than 20% but way more than deserved.
Evening dining, we had the chefs tasting menu and was impressed of the attention to detail, food quality and taste.
We also had the wine paring which I would also highly recommend.
Friendly service, eligant interior and comfortable enviorment.
A must visit.
Clearly, Vitae is a fancy restaurant and I've given it multiple chances but the food just isn't good. My snow crab was so creamy that I spent half my meal scraping sauce off of it. The dessert was pretty good though. It's just too expensive for a place where the food is sub-par.
My parents live in midtown east and I got to choose the dinner location so I opted for this little pricey place. It is totally worth it. I imagine it's busy hours are in the afternoon because it was so quiet on Saturday night. The service was amazing. The food was sublime and the drinks were delicious. GO HERE if you can afford it, I can't but I'm glad someone supports my expensive eating habits.
