Everything was perfect except for the tuna appetizer. The presentation was absolutely beautiful but the fish was fishy - indicating less than fresh. We really enjoyed the evening and our server, Emily, was pleasant, helpful and attentive. Thank you for a lovely night. More

Amazing!!! This was our second time here, it checked every box. The service was top notch, very professional and welcoming. We started our evening with a couple dozen olde salts, they were perfection. The mignonette is everything, it complements the oysters perfectly with a fresh squeezed lemon and pop of horseradish, umami!! Our next course was the baked oysters, amazing flavors of basil and a nice crunch. My main course was the Paella. There is your life before this dish and after. I am pretty sure I will crave this sorcery and have to have it often. The broth is so flavorful, the mussels, clams and shrimp are prepared perfectly. The rice has a lovely crunch and amazing flavor and the cream on top is so heavenly you hear angels sing. The beauty of this dish is layers of different flavors and textures prepared perfectly to give you that perfect bite. My husband ordered the whole wood fired fish on a bed of rice, collards and a shallot topping. Our server filleted the striped bass table side. The fish was so fresh and had flavors of rosemary and lemon. The shallot topping has hints of sweetness that paired perfectly and added to the dish. The collards countered the sweetness with a savory flavor. I grew up southern with collards and never imagined them paired with fish until this evening, I have to say...genius!!! We finished the evening with the peanut butter chocolate gelato, it was the perfect bow on top of our perfect culinary evening. We had the best foodie night, can’t wait to go back! More

My husband, my teen and I had dinner before a show at November Theater, which is practically next door. You can valet your car for dinner and the show. I like the ease of this arrangement. I started off with a specialty drink, lime something. It was refreshing and bright. I would have liked it even better had it been a hot day. We didn’t get appetizers, but our wait brought us warm bread and herb butter. Wow! Lightly crispy crust & soft warm moist inside-we devoured it. We didn’t dare get more ( although asked) because we would have ruined our appetites. I read once that one can predict the quality of the food to come by the pre dinner bread that’s served, and I’ve found that to be true. Our meals were tasty, prepared well and delivered right off the stove. I had the mussels [appetizer] with crab and lobster cream sauce and a small salad with balsamic dressing as my entree. Teen got a filet mignon encrusted with blue cheese--nicely seared but tender and red inside- served atop mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. I was surprised my teen ate everything on her plate! My mussels were cooked perfectly, and the crab and lobster sauce was a nice accompaniment. Toasted bread slices were served on the side for absorbing the delectable sauce. Hubby had the NY strip which was delicious. Obviously Max’s uses high quality meat. I enjoyed tasting the different flavors of the NY strip and the filet. We three shared a strawberry cheesecake slice & I had an espresso. It was a nice finish to the meal, although I prefer a graham cracker crust on my cheesecake. Our waiter was perfect. She was attentive at all times without being obtrusive or interrupting. She checked on us once while I was holding my hair off my neck (hot flash). She brought me a tall glass of ice cubes and a cloth. Holding the glass against my neck helped sooo much. Sweet relief! I don’t recall her name, but she said she was relatively new to rva. She was petite with long blonde hair pulled up in a ponytail. More

Super cool spot with awesome happy hour specials until 7pm including on Friday night. Get the pizza rolls, they are amazing. We sat in the front window so didn’t see all of the restaurant, but what we did see was very neat. Our server was great and offered informed suggestions. Parking was challenging, but we were able to find street parking about 3 blocks away. I will definitely go back. More

The Surry Seafood Co
The Surry Seafood Co
Seafood | Smithfield, Norfolk / Virginia Beach

Randy and Brian Pack of Pack Brothers Hospitality had been looking for a place to expand their operations since 2012 after their most recent expansion at their family restaurant, hotel and marina, Smithfield Station. They looked in many places from Charleston, SC to Jamestown, VA to Manteo, NC. All of the places viewed had a fault or two that kept the brothers from diving in. In the winter of 2018, Surry County, never before on the radar, approached the brothers about taking over The Surry Seafood Co. and they were all ears. Here was a property close enough to their home that offers hotel rooms, a marina, and a great seafood restaurant! On May 1, 2018 Pack Brothers Hospitality took over operations and after a bit of revamping opened its doors to the residents and visitors of Surry County.

Discover Virginia

Virginia is known for more than just delicious southern cooking; they have their own style! If you are a ham lover, look out for Virginia ham — also known as Smithfield ham. It is only legal to produce in one place in the world, Smithfield, Virginia. Virginian cuisine also includes a variety of BBQ that range from all vinegar to a vinegar-based sweetness. A hearty Brunswick stew is another mainstay of Virginia. Originally using an Appalachian flying squirrel, it now uses a variety of meats braised in this vegetable stew. Traditional Virginian apple cider and apple butter, made from Wineapples, is a real treat. Another delicacy is any seafood that is cooked with Old Bay, originally formulated with spices from a specific region of the state, the Chesapeake Bay.
