Virgil's Real BBQ - New York City Ratings and Reviews
I usually love Virgil BBQ Brisket Sandwich but this time it came out of kitchen Room Temperature, Bah. Waitstaff and Manager were very solicitous and concerned, gave me many Tsk tsks and "oh my"s but did nothing else. One other thing, take Coney Island Root Beer off the menu, meant to be a marriage of beer and root beer...the worst of both worlds. And i ought to know, I am from the Coney Island neighborhood.
We are regulars. This was our after-movie dinner. Savannah Salad without any pork and additional avocado slices with Grilled chicken: They have improved the greens’ mix. Grilled chicken was fresh( sometimes is not and it gets dry) Kansas Fried chicken all white meat was on point. The best part was as always Livia. She just remembers what we like and how we liked. Always a pleasure. This is a great joint pre or post shows.
We had a terrific time with delicious food that we thoroughly enjoyed.
Loved the cheddar grits, we got a sampler for 2 for about $50 and a Cesar's salad and split all amongst 3 of us and we were stuffed.
Really tasty, and for 3 to eat for under $100 with tip in times Square and have authentic BBQ, you can't go wrong! Love Virgil's
Virgil's is our stand-by for before theater dining. It's convenient to Broadway theaters. The menu is barbecue with some more healthy options. (We had the grilled catfish.) They also do a nice chicken fried steak. The sound level can approach boiler room levels, but was moderate the night we were there. They do a big business in crowds. I usually see a couple large groups there and they seem happy. It also looks like they can accommodate kids pretty well, too.
Started with unclean menu with grease all over it, ended with a dry and untasty BBQ. Appetizers were cold. Brisket was passable but rest of the pig out platter might as well be fed to the pigs!
Will never go here again, I gave it the benefit of the doubt, it is owned by Carmine's and I never had a bad meal there.
Sorry to be so blunt!
Being a lover of all BBQ, especially Texas BBQ, I was Leery of a BBQ place in Times Square. However, I am a very picky BBQ eater.
This place is great! Take it from the southerners Reviews , just as I did. Many reviews from northeast folk misrepresent this gem.
We dined at Virgil’s pretty early because we had tix to show. Because of traffic, we actually were 25 minutes late for our reservation so they canceled the reservation. We were aware of the policy that they release your table after 15 minutes. However, the staff was very accommodating and found us a table anyway. The food is great bbq and the service is friendly and efficient. The place was packed but we got our delicious food quickly, never felt rushed and got out in time for the show. Thanks Virgil’s!
I love this place. A pitmasters once told me that the secret to finding a good, consistent bbq spot is one that has consistent volume. This place has volume and very good bbq. The quality is really good but I think the flavor was more bold in years past. Also, they used to sprinkle dry rub on top of the ribs just before serving (which added a bright note) and for some reason they don't do that anymore.
I went to Virgil’s a long time ago and remember it being fantastic! This was not the case on my recent visit. The service was lackluster and unattentive. The food was edible but unimpressive. The ribs were good. Brisket not so much. Fried chicken was good but the white meat was dry. Mac and cheese, coleslaw, beets, collard greens. Average at best. Might be good for bar food. A lot of sports playing. I won’t be back.
