Virgil's Real BBQ - New York City Ratings and Reviews
Virgil's is a favorite of mine and when out of town company came for a visit it was the first place that came to mind. We all enjoyed our meals and our waiter Michael was very helpful and courteous. I tried the bourbon beer and it was excellent and went well with my pulled pork dinner. The onion rings and fried pickles were great. We were all full and happy when we left.
The ribs were sent back twice. The first dish, along with the next two replacements were all the same. Dry. It is clear the food was cooked well in advance of me ordering them. The sauce which covered them was not to be mistaken with "fresh".
On the positive side, our waiter David was a genuinely friendly and attentive server. The tip left was a gesture of thanks to him for his service - not that of the chef/kitchen. Shame he has to share.
I've been going to Virgil's for over 20 years. Probably introduced 100 people to it over those years. One year during a weeklong visit to NYC, I ate there 7 times in 6 days. So, it pains me to say this last time was probably my last. Unless I'm meeting someone there for a beer and hushpuppies--those are still awesome.
There have been ownership, menu and pricing changes over the years and each time, they slip a little more. This lunch made me a little embarrassed that I'd made such a big deal out of bringing people there. My Texas BBQ reputation suffered a bit. The brisket was super fatty in some sections and overcooked in others. The pulled pork was dry. Even the baked beans aren't the same anymore.
Sad to say, Hill Country BBQ is a better NYC option these days. Virgil's...thanks for the memories.
Made a reservation which was smart as place filled completely quickly in the dinner time area.
Drinks were tasty and reasonable cost; lots of TV's for football! Texas Dining companion hasd Beef ribs scrumtious(SP!). Said it was like Texas! I had Carolina pork and was finger licking good! Beans and slaw were good, just served in containers that were too small!
Sweet tea was sweet!
A wonderful surprise restaurant that serves good food at a reasonable price located just off Times Square!
Food was delicious, service was a little lacking. We were back in a small corner table and I felt we were somewhat neglected noticing our waiter going to other tables more frequently and he never came around to ask us if we wanted another refill on our drink.
Yordy our server was pleasant and attentive making sure every moment of our meal we were doing good. Celebrating a friend's birthday we went for the pick 2 BBQ combo. This was our first time eating at this establishment. My trash ribs and brisket could have been a little better if they weren't drench in the BBQ sauce. My friend said his pork ribs were a little sweet for his taste buds. He enjoyed the chicken better. The sides of collard greens, cheese grits, mashed potatoes with gravy and pecan rice was good although I believe a little sweet potatoes or mac and cheese would have been a delight to this meal. Not on the menu. Nice size portions for leftovers. Next stop Carmine's for some family style Italian cuisine. Just right up the block and a 15% off check from Virgil's makes it nicer.
Was referred to Virgil's BBQ by a family member. Our first time NY
Excellent barbecue The brisket, chicken and ribs very tender and flavorful and the side dishes were great as well. Our nephew from Texas gave it a thumbs up 👍🏽
he is a very picky about his barbecue. We will definitely recommend this place to others .
First-rate bbq ribs, pulled chicken, pulled pork & bbq sauce. Their beer selection is also outstanding. I was especially delighted that they have, on tap, Kentucky bourbon beer, an outstanding brew that comes from (of all places) Michigan.
The atmosphere is very good-times festive. Who wouldn't be happy in this restaurant if they came here craving excellent bbq?
