Virgil's Real BBQ - New York City Ratings and Reviews
We made a reservation for 4 at 6:30pm on a Saturday. We got there and the place was a madhouse. We waited for like 30 mins and was still not seated while the restaurant was seating walk-ins. We ended up just leaving because who knows when we will be seated. What is the point of making a reservation when it’s obviously not a priority for them?
Any restaurant with such low sense of customer service deserves a 1 star
I had a 6:15 PM reservation for 12 (allowing for a relaxed meal before an 8 PM show with 11 teens). We were shuttled to stand in the bar area, which was basically a mosh pit of people waiting for seating. We were not seated until 7:00 PM. So what was the point of having a reservation?!
The food was good and our waiter worked his rear off to serve us quickly in order to get us out in time for our show (which we made in the nick of time).
I recommend the restaurant only if you have time to enjoy it. And as for reservations? They apparently mean nothing.
Saturday night. Bedlam. Chaos. Finally seated 25 minutes after our Open Table reservation time. Spent the time waiting crushed with others in the entry.
Were seated upstairs where the smell of rancid oil from the popcorn machine in the bar kept drifting up.
We live in NYC and eat at Virgils often before the theater.
This is the last time. The ribs are not worth the awful experience.
Comfort Food Heaven! A great spot to hang with friends. Reservations recommended as it is in the heart of the theater district and very popular. Really enjoyed the Train wreck French Fries, Hush Puppies and BBQ Wing appetizers. Try the Brisket melt or Pulled pork sandwich.
We visited Virgil's on a cold Saturday evening -- so I can understand why the restaurant was super crowded and noisy. Because of the crowds and noise, it wasn't a great dining experience -- we were meeting friends we hadn't seen in months, and we couldn't really have any kind of conversation.
The food was really good. My friend and I had the brisket and found it very tasty. Our two boys each had hamburgers and cleaned their plates. My husband had chicken and ribs and is still talking about how good it was a few days later.
In addition, our waiter was exceedingly pleasant and helpful despite the busy atmosphere. He helped all of us decide on drinks, and recommended side dishes when we were indecisive. Furthermore, he always had a big, genuine smile on his face.
For our situation, I wish we had found someplace a bit quieter and amenable to conversation, but perhaps there's no such place like that at dinnertime on a Saturday in Times Square :)
We usually love eating at Virgil's. This time was disappointing. When we walked in the restaurant we checked in to let them know we arrived. They confirmed our reservation and told us to wait at the bar and they would call our name. After waiting 4o minutes, I asked them how much longer our wait would be. The hostess insisted we never checked in and that she had given away our table. She wasn't apologetic at all. After waiting 20 more minutes they squeezed us into 2 tables. Our waiter was only ok. One of our kids had an alergy. When he was questioned about one of the items on the menu being safe for the child. He said, "He should be fine" but he wasn't sure. We then asked the manager and he let us know that the food was not safe for him and was told exactly what he could order. The waiter rushed us though everything and a nice meal ended up feelin hurried and stressful. The food was good but everything else was so disappointing.
Had to wait 25 minutes, even with reservation. Everyone waiting was stuffed into the bar area. It was the day before New Years Eve in Times Square, so I’m sure that had something to do with it. The staff were great though and we really liked our server David.
