Virgil's Real BBQ - New York City Ratings and Reviews
My "go-to" place when I want BBQ while in NYC. Used Open Table for reserving table for 6 immediately after coming out of a theater. There were convenient openings. We were a bit late (walking through the "tourist" crowds), but they held our table! Great Service just for that! It's very busy at most any time due to the proximity to Times Square, but worth the wait if you love good BBQ. It'll measure up against our southern BBQ places anytime! I know, as I always go for BBQ when my travels frequently take me down south to the other "best" BBQ (TX, GA, NC, etc.).
Virgil's was a great last minute find for our party of 11. Menu options were plentiful, prices were great and the portions large.
The staff did their best to take care of us. I believe the staff member who greeted us and took our drink order left for the day. After that, we never saw him again. We had to ask surrounding servers for refills. They were all very accommodating, but it would have been nice to have a designated server.
Great place in a central location! Very long wait if you don’t have a reservation. We were seated right at our reservation time on a packed Saturday night. Once seated, service was fast and attentive. Food came out quickly and was amazing. Highly recommend!
Having a confirmed reservation we were led to a table that was already occupied. ?? When we asked to sit at another unoccupied table we were told that the table was reserved for another guest. After waiting another 10 minutes for a table, the host gave us that second unoccupied table. No apologies from the floor manager or the host for the inconvenience.
After some time the food came out at best warm. Good but could have been a little hotter.
We'll give another try at a later date. Hopefully Virgil's can get their act together.
Been going to Virgil's for over 15 years.
Took my daughter there over the weekend for dinner, before going to see the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center.
Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience...to the point where my daughter asked me to remove Virgil's from our 'approved ' list of place to eat in NYC.
As usual, the front desk was great, our reservation was honored and we were immediately whisked to our table. Our waitress was very personable...and, we had ordered our food within 10 minutes of sitting down....and, that's where things went downhill:
1) Tables on either side of us were sat 10 and 15 minutes AFTER we were sat (and, after our food order was taken)
2) 50 minutes after being sat, we still didn't have our dinner...but, the tables on either side of us were knee-deep in BBQ
3) I had to ask a Manager to check on our order; and, when it finally came...almost an hour after we sat...the ribs were extremely fatty (not at all in keeping with the ribs I've been getting there for years), the french fries were lukewarm and soggy...and, the corn muffins were dry.
4) My daughter could only eat a small amount, and asked if we could go. I also at only about 1/2 of my food...and, found that the fatty ribs/soggy fries combo was making my stomach queasy.
5) Got the check, paid and went to see the Tree. Won't be coming back any time soon.
On Sunday, December 3, 2017, I brought and treated Katherine, my fiancé and I at Virgil’s BBQ (Time Square) to celebrate our 1 year engagement.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our time at Virgil’s BBQ. Our meals were delicious and the service provided by our waitress, Claire was terrific.
It was both our first time visiting Virgil’s BBQ and we had a 100 percent great time there! The service provided by the staff including Claire was indeed first class, and the meals that we ordered (we both ordered a grilled chicken salad) was very well prepared, and undisputedly delicious.
We highly recommend that all restaurant patrons visit Virgil’s BBQ!!!
We made our reservation for 8:30 and we were seated around 8:45, which was not bad at all considering the place was pretty much full to capacity. The staff secured my baby stroller in their closet which I thought was awesome because I didn’t have to carry it upstairs and waste any space around our seating area. Our waitress Roxxi immediately arrived to take our order for drinks and appetizers and greeted us pleasantly and with a smile. After taking our orders, the food arrived quickly with no discrepancies. I ordered the ribs, which were outstanding. My brother ordered the Catfish, fried to perfection. The only thing I didn’t much care for was the cornbread. It had small bits of jalapeño in it, which it doesn’t specify on the menu. We could not order any alcohol (except beer) for the table because we were not seated on the first floor near the bar. Other than that, the atmosphere was pleasant. The restaurant had a saloon vibe, with Christmas lights and garland hanging from the walls and bannisters. The lights were dim and Christmas music was playing throughout. The restaurant is also listed as family and kid friendly, so they offered well priced kids meals and a variety of juices. The only issue was that the bathrooms do not have a changing table, nor do they have any counter space to lay out your own changing mat. Overall, great place to enjoy real barbecue for a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend this place to others.
Saturday night we did not enjoy our visit as much as we had in the past. Since the front door was left open on a cold evening, when we sat upstairs it was chilly and we were uncomfortable. We needed to wear out coats. The service (Roxy) and the food was good but the chill put a damper on the evening. In addition, we were seated 20 minutes after our reservation.
Second visit to Virgil’s. This time it was on a Saturday evening in early December. The restaurant was packed! We had reservations for 7:15 but were not seated until after 7:45 as they were quite behind. Our waitress, Roxxi, was excellent once we were seated, and the food was top notch and came out relatively quickly. Can’t recommend the hush puppies enough!
