Virgil's Real BBQ - New York City Ratings and Reviews
Go to the city a lot on business and always take the family back for a good preChristmas trip. 4 kiddos under 14 y/o. Made reservations for 8:15pm. Sat after 9pm, others complaining too because they were so far behind. Lots of excuses, but with this type of restaurant and being associated with the world class Carmines, it was a super disappointment.
Food was good though. The manager did comp our appetizers and first round of beers. The whole staff was working really hard and staying pleasant even in the face of many adversaries, so that was good to see.
From other reviews, it looks like our experience might have been a one off. I might try it again midweek and not at holidays, but their sister Italian restaurant has always been over the top, even during the same time of year.
Probably one of my worst dining experiences in some time. I booked a reservation for 17 people through the group sales department, as any party of 15 or more needs to be handled by a group sales agent. Our check-in & table set-up was the best part of our dining experience - prompt, courteous, & welcoming. We had 1 server for a party of 17 (8 adults, 9 children) - this server was totally overwhelmed from the very beginning. I blame poor management for this, as they were well aware of our party size days in advance of our reservation. This server was replaced approx. 1-1/2 hours into service after we sought out management - mind you, we did not get any drink refills, no updates on delayed food service, or any attention for that matter after our food order. After our server was replaced by "Dave" all went smoothly from there on. Dave was absolutely, positively the best server we could ask for - professional, empathetic, & accommodating. But it was a little too late due to poor management.
The manager on duty was apologetic, but it came across as insincere. I would recommend to the restaurant that all group reservations have at least 2 servers to handle the initial food & drinks order, so as to streamline the chaos that ensues at the beginning of a dining experience. And pitchers of water and/or soda should be available for purchase. Maybe even munchies such as popcorn for those busy times of year.
Virgil's is a great option for larger groups near Times Square. Food is great and service is top notch. It's crowded and noisy, but they move folks in and out expertly. I love that they now have GF options noted on the menu. Made my experience that much better.
Food and atmosphere were fantastic. The service was lacking, even though several servers were just standing around, which meant to me that they obviously weren't busy or just didn't care. We had to walk up to the bar to ask for refills on our drinks and still never received them (this probably would have added another $50 to our check if served). We finally grabbed the the water pitcher from the host stand just because we were thirsty. After we got our food nobody ever checked back with us to see if all was ok. We eventually had to walk up to the cashier to get our check.
I live virgils and go there often
the last two month, I have been there twice
I do recommend some of my friends
Food is generally good
I always get the friend chicken
lately its not like it use of be flat tasate
maybe have to try somethings new or find a some place new to go to.
Question : Did you change the cooks
I always get chicken / white meat
did the prices go up for the holiday season.
We took our two kids (5&7) to dinner before seeing the Rockettes. The food was great and affordable. The atmosphere is conducive to having children and the servers and staff were nice and accommodating. It did take a bit of time to initially get waited on, but the overall experience was great and we would definitely go back. I’ve already recommended it to my friends!
My "go-to" place when I want BBQ while in NYC. Used Open Table for reserving table for 6 immediately after coming out of a theater. There were convenient openings. We were a bit late (walking through the "tourist" crowds), but they held our table! Great Service just for that! It's very busy at most any time due to the proximity to Times Square, but worth the wait if you love good BBQ. It'll measure up against our southern BBQ places anytime! I know, as I always go for BBQ when my travels frequently take me down south to the other "best" BBQ (TX, GA, NC, etc.).
Virgil's was a great last minute find for our party of 11. Menu options were plentiful, prices were great and the portions large.
The staff did their best to take care of us. I believe the staff member who greeted us and took our drink order left for the day. After that, we never saw him again. We had to ask surrounding servers for refills. They were all very accommodating, but it would have been nice to have a designated server.
Great place in a central location! Very long wait if you don’t have a reservation. We were seated right at our reservation time on a packed Saturday night. Once seated, service was fast and attentive. Food came out quickly and was amazing. Highly recommend!
Having a confirmed reservation we were led to a table that was already occupied. ?? When we asked to sit at another unoccupied table we were told that the table was reserved for another guest. After waiting another 10 minutes for a table, the host gave us that second unoccupied table. No apologies from the floor manager or the host for the inconvenience.
After some time the food came out at best warm. Good but could have been a little hotter.
We'll give another try at a later date. Hopefully Virgil's can get their act together.
Been going to Virgil's for over 15 years.
Took my daughter there over the weekend for dinner, before going to see the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center.
Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience...to the point where my daughter asked me to remove Virgil's from our 'approved ' list of place to eat in NYC.
As usual, the front desk was great, our reservation was honored and we were immediately whisked to our table. Our waitress was very personable...and, we had ordered our food within 10 minutes of sitting down....and, that's where things went downhill:
1) Tables on either side of us were sat 10 and 15 minutes AFTER we were sat (and, after our food order was taken)
2) 50 minutes after being sat, we still didn't have our dinner...but, the tables on either side of us were knee-deep in BBQ
3) I had to ask a Manager to check on our order; and, when it finally came...almost an hour after we sat...the ribs were extremely fatty (not at all in keeping with the ribs I've been getting there for years), the french fries were lukewarm and soggy...and, the corn muffins were dry.
4) My daughter could only eat a small amount, and asked if we could go. I also at only about 1/2 of my food...and, found that the fatty ribs/soggy fries combo was making my stomach queasy.
5) Got the check, paid and went to see the Tree. Won't be coming back any time soon.
It was our second visit to NYC in 2 years. We ate at Virgils the last time we were in NYC. This year our reservation was at 4p, we got seated within 10 min of arriving. I didn't feel that our service was as good at two years ago.
It took forever to get our drink order, Our server never placed our order for the appetizer that we requested, the music was excessively loud (we were right below a speaker by the stairs) We latterly had to scream to talk to our friends. Happy Hour was supposed to be til 6pm, our drinks were expensive even for Happy Hour. (Miller light and Angry Orchard). We left well before the 6pm cut off. It seemed to take a long time to get our check, we even asked for it 2x. Our server seemed a little preoccupied or maybe she was just busy.
The food was really good, just wished for a better time, especially when 2 years ago it was fantastic.
