Fabulous food and service. Really made the occasion special.
So sad to say this, but for 150.00 a head I expected more. The service was painfully slow and for the most part inattentive. The food was at most average for the 3 course prix fix menu. One of my courses was actually cold. We got the wine pairing, which, at 18.00 a glass were just average wines. I was hoping for more.
We LOVE this place! The meal was exceptionally delicious and the wine pairings were interesting and perfectly chosen to meet the best flavors of the food. Although we have been pleased every time we go, this last meal (September 2019) was easily the most delightful.
Everything was excellent from the moment we sat down and received a congratulations note for our 25th Wedding Anniversary to our lovely table by a window. Carlos the Sommelier was amazing and very informative on the food and wine selection, and the servers were prompt and attentive. The food, drinks and ambience were wonderful. The only drawbacks were:

The air conditioner was turned up very high and we had to ask a couple times to have it turned down but I ended up eating part of my meal in my coat.
The menu is set up with only a 3-course or a 7-course meal (so no a la carte starters or entrees) and it's pretty pricey.
If you choose to do the wine pairings with each course that can be expensive for two, so we opted for a bottle.
If you are celebrating a special occasion it's a nice choice, just remember to bring a coat. :)
The seven course dinner should definitely need to improve, especially the cold and a bit salty corn soup.
Little too quiet. Over priced wine list. Food and service was great.
While the service was terrific, the quality of the meal was poor and extremely overpriced. The salad was drenched in vinegar dressing and the food tasted bland. We were also asked to leave the restaurant early for closing! Huge disappointment.
One of the very best food-wine pairing and taste experiences on the peninsula.

One main course, Wagu beef, was difficult to slice and chew. Sad.

Excellent food, well-prepared and well-presented. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Undoubtedly pricey, but this was a special occasion, and 6 very satisfied guests meant that it was well worth the outlay.
We had a wonderful evening celebrating my daughter’s birthday. Mark our waiter and the staff and chef did a great job!

Tasting menu, charcuterie, and cheese appetizer were all really tasty. Service presentation as expected. Wine service not as expected. Wine menu has lots of cross outs as if it has been a while since updates. For a Friday night, sommelier was absent. Server did his best to pinch hit but we were both stabbing in the dark rather than applying a lot of experience. Guess we should have gone for the additional wine pairing but...
It was very quiet, particularly for a Saturday night, but that meant the service was great and the noise level was low.
Viognier used to be a go to for us. Then menus and things changed; and now it’s back on the rotation as an amazing place to make any dining out night special. Excellent service, food, and attention to detail. Great to have you back!

Rare to find such high quality food and service in the peninsular. We usually have to drive into SF for this level of food and service - so glad to find an alternative without all the headaches and inconvenience going into SF, and it's cheaper than SF too.
We had a really fantastic prix fixe dinner here. Each course had very nice choices and the wine pairing was nicely priced. The food is elegant, well-prepared and interesting. Service is excellent. Just wish the decor matched the elegance of the meal. Also, the background music is a little dated and staid. Something more contemporary or with a quiet world beat vibe would be nice. Otherwise, this restaurant is a true hidden gem, upscale and just fantastic and worthy of any special occasion or foodie night out.
I went there with my wife to celebrate my birthday. We had the three course meal. The waitress was very friendly, the ambiance upscale and the food was delicious. The waitress even gave us each a free glass of champagne to celebrate my birthday. Highly recommended for special occasions!
We enjoyed a three course meal with wine pairing. From the moment we were greeted until the very end the staff was attentive and professional. The food was cooked perfectly. The visual on the food was thoughtful. We capped the delicious meal and wonderful evening off with a 10 year tawny port. We will definitely return.

Impeccable service. Dishes were like art and tasted fantastic. This is the go to restaurant in San Mateo for a special occasion. TJ was a gracious and informative waiter.

Our first time in visiting this centrally located restaurant in San Mateo. What a pleasure! The food and wines were wonderful but what made the evening was the very special and personalized service from the manager to our waitress to the busboy. A pleasure from beginning to end.

My group had a fantastic experience - really good food and fantastic service (professional, friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and funny). Two of us had the premium wine pairing and thought it was really great. Will definitely go back!
Everything was excellent, esp the service. Ambiance and food was good, too.
I have dined at this restaurant several times and was always anxious to visit it again. I went early on a Tuesday night with three friends and although there were only two other parties in the restaurant, we were seated next to a couple and a youngster under two. The child continued to scream and we asked to be moved, certainly no fault of the restaurant.
I would say that half of our order was a disappointment. My salad was over-dressed and the lettuce was soggy. My pork chop was over-cooked and I was brought another one. One of my guests had the steak which was also over-cooked, had the pork chop and the third the fish entree. My guests decided not to have the wine pairing so we ended up, following the waiter's recommendation, ordering three glasses of wine. I never saw nor was told how the the wine was. With a 15% tip the bill was $550.00.
I will not return. Granted it was a slow night but the food was tired and there were several repeated items on the menu.
Viognier always delivers excellent service, meal and menu guidance and delivered as expected this time. Highly reliable for high quality experience overall.
My wife had checked on line to see what the menu would be. However, the menu for the evening was different than the on line menu. Perhaps OpenTable might ask Viognier to keep their on line menus current.
Loved everything about the place. From the set 3 course menu to the servers explaining the food when served. Never had to ask for a refill of anything...butter for the bread, they were on it, water, on it. Complimentary glass of white wine for me and the wife's anniversary. Worth every penny.

Went as a couple for the New Year's Eve prix fixe 5 course menu. Not cheap, but fairly priced with outstanding food; quiet atmosphere, elegant but casual surroundings. We had a great time. The only problem was with handicapped access. We arrived for an 8 pm reservation at the main door; saw a flight of stairs and a sign stating that elevator access was through Draeger's. Draeger's was closed by then, so we had to call the restaurant. The person who answered the phone had to ask the manager what to do. Eventually the manager came down with keys to the elevator by the parking garage to let us use that to access the second floor. Leaving we reversed the process but with an employee who had been given the keys but was unfamiliar with the process for using them to get the elevator to stop on the ground floor. Viognier needs to have better signage about handicapped access and better training on that subject for their staff. Everyone was very cooperative but it was a slow, awkward process.
Great food & extremely great services. Except the dinner cost is really expensive.
A wonderful dining experience of the tasting menu. The portions for the two entrees and desserts were quite large for a tasting menu. The flavors and presentation were very good and the servers were attentive, but not overbearing. I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner. My only complaint is that the choices are limited, as you can only select either the five course tasting menu or a three course meal. In addition, whatever was selected had to be served for everyone - meaning that if someone wanted he tasting menu and others only wanted 3-courses someone had to compromise as they would only serve the table 5-courses or 3, but not allow for mixing and matching. Also, on the 5-course menu there were no choices, which was rather limiting. Luckily, they allowed for a substitution for the red meat, but it would have been good to have some choices. Regardless, the meal was delicious and it was a real treat to dine there.
