Normally a satisfying place to dine, New Year's Eve was a surprising disappointment. We knew the menu was prix fixe but the food was bland and over-cooked. The salad lettuce was soggy most likely because it was sitting in the dressing in the kitchen. The poor girl assigned to be bartender had obviously never made a martini in her life - she had to read the recipe but still served an unpalatable concoction, equal parts gin and vermouth! Sending it back, I ordered a Gibson instead, emphasizing that I wanted it very dry; she served it with olives. When I pointed out that a Gibson comes with onions, she apologetically took it back only to return with the news that they were out of onions. She was obviously embarrassed because she was so out of her element and we felt bad for her. Although the food was not up to par, our server, Brianna, was wonderful. This was New Year's Eve, we understand, but if a restaurant entices diners to celebrate a special event, a better foot should be put forward. We will give Vintage Kitchen another chance and dine from their regular menu but will probably try someplace else next New Year's.
Philip does an outstanding job creating delicious entrees. The duck and potatoes for two are our favorite selections. New Year's Eve had a special 4 course menu. The Hopping John's were succulent. The salad with fried cheese was a lovely surprise. The deconstructed Beef Wellington was cooked to perfection. The bread pudding was an excellent way to end 2017.
I really want to be able to recommend this restaurant. The meal was delicious! However, the overall experience left much to be desired. There were 8 people in our party; we were celebrating a 40th birthday. Our reservation was for 8:30 on a Friday evening. We arrived at the restaurant just in time right on time and walked in. There was NO ONE in the front of the restaurant, and my no one, I mean a host/hostess or customers. We watched clear a moment and then we’re escorted toward the waterside seating area and there was 1 other couple in the entire restaurant. Seemed so deserted for a Friday night. The emptiness really just left a lot to be desired. The hostess/waitress seemed a little bothered to wait on us, while we couldn’t really understand why seeing as how it wasn’t at all busy.
Basically, we quickly ordered food (which really was delicious), so that we could eat and move on to somewhere a little more engaging.
My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here, and the food was great. Instead of each picking an entree, we got 4 small plates to share, and they were all delicious (especially the cheese plate, and the mac & cheese). We each tried one of their specialty cocktails, and I really enjoyed their take on a moscow mule, but my wife got some smoky margarita and it was overwhelmingly smoky. All in all, I'd say they're definitely worth a visit.
This place was great! Local ingredients expertly and creatively prepared by a staff who clearly care about food. It's worth a 3 minute walk from the lesser restaurants at Waterside. Great view of the river. An all-Virginia wine list. It's a culinary celebration of the Old Dominion.
Expected a quaint place w river view. This is located in an office building. We walked on 10 min after our reservation (1:10 pm). With the exception of two other people in the restaurant, we were the only diners. No one in bar. Too bad. They seemed to have a good reputation. We wondered what was wrong. Our waitress, Brenda, was great.
Just the worst.
Food was alright but took FOREVER to come out. We were literally chastised for not ordering our entrees at the same time as starters. (I get why now- the kitchen takes their sweet time making burgers.) We asked for a burger with no mayo but it came out doused in it. When we asked for a new one, our server was almost combative, telling us it was aioli. Aioli is mayonnaise....I don't think the server OR the chef knew that.

Ok. Great service. But the menu is overhyped. Purported local but the catch of the day in the height of wild Alaskan salmon season AND at a restaurant literally on the eastern seaboard was a Norwegian salmon. Come on. The burger was good but served on a cafeteria lunch tray when everything else was on plates. Just overall inconsistent. But the mac and cheese and Madeira was delicious.
Nice view, poor wine selections, only Virginia wines by the glass and they were not good. Food was mediocre and that is a stretch. Martini was warm, had to ask for ice which ruined it. I was really excited to eat here and it was disappointing, I don't think we'll go back.
Our dinner at Vintage Kitchen was a lovely occasion, very good service and excellent food. You can always count on excellent food at Vintage Kitchen. The river view outside was enjoyable. The dining room is elegant, simple, with soft music playing in the background. Thank you for not drowning out conversation! We'll be back, and recommend Vintage Kitchen to friends.
I enjoyed my evening meal at this restaurant. The food was delicious. The service was good. The menu was not overly expansive, but had a very good selection from which to choose. The bottle of wine we had was very good but very expensive. The Virginia wines offered were $35 a bottle. All other wines were high priced - mostly in the $60 or $75 dollar range, as I recall. The food is fairly expensive as well, but was good.
This was by far the worst dining experience I've had in 22 years of living in Norfolk! There was absolutely no reason for the quality of the food, length of time it took to get service or for the hour wait to get a simple dish. BTW, there was 7 people total dining or at the bar. Unacceptable!
It was a nice place with good food , but the service was a bit lacking it wasn't very packed and we still had a hard time getting things like silverware or refills . I found it over priced for what it was . The food was good , but I personally wouldn't go back, I expected it to be more of a see and be seen place , instead it has the feel of a upscale snobby quiet place ..... good for some people. It not my personal style
I took my wife out for Valentine's Day. The Kitchen had a special menu that evening. We had a delightful time. The food and the service were excellent, from the warm greeting to the farewell at evening's end. We enjoyed a lovely view of the river and the warmth of the fireplace. Highly recommended.
We didn't know how / what door to come into. We called and the first person said come threw the door. We asked the front doors of the building? She said she was not sure the would get a manager. Were told come to the garage and take elevator.
We were seated at a wonderful table but it took forever for the server to come.
This was a true disappointment from start to finish.
We arrived on time for our reservation 7:00 pm and waited at least 5 minutes at the hostess stand before anyone approached us. When that finally happened we received an apology and then we were asked to wait to be seated.
We were seated and told we would receive water with lemon by the host and then he never came back. At 7:25 a waitress approached and said she would bring water. We asked if we could order a glass of wine she said she would bring that with the water.
She brought the water- then the wine then the glasses all separated service.
We ordered dinner at 7:30
At 7:50 we received the appetizer
At 8:30 dinner which was cold and the waitress apologized and said here is an extra glass of wine because it took so long.
We asked her to give us the check and dessert to go because it had taken so long. That was not even packaged right!
Help is needed here- this is amateur hour.
We came for dinner during Restaurant Week so the menu was offering only a few choices. The pumpkin soup was presented beautifully and really delicious. There was a nice cocktail and wine selection. The pork was cooked beautifully and the crab was perfect. The dishes were creative without being hard to decipher. The service was spot-on. The only drawback is that the restaurant is very dark. The lone bathroom was in dire need of an update and expansion if possible. All in all, a great meal and we will definitely return.
For Restaurant week I would have thought the menu would be the best the chef could offer. The salad tasted like it had been put together earlier. Lettuce limp. Sweet potato fries heavy on the salt. The 3 of us did't care for the dessert. It would have been nice to have a waitress that could smile rather than feel like we were just one more table to serve. Very little sauce on the ganache
Some friends and I went here for restaurant week. The menu sounded phenomenal and we wanted to check it out. The staff seemed unprepared when we walked in as there was no hostess, although the bartender did greet us. Our waitress did a great job of explaining the menu and pointing out a few popular dishes that we should try. I had the award winning spicy Caesar salad and was not impressed. I believe the dressing had a bit too many anchovies because the dish had a fishy after taste. The other dishes my friends and I had were the pumpkin soup (very sweet and dessert-like), chicken and waffles (my friend said the jalapeño syrup had an earthy taste to it), Malbec beef brisket (you can't go wrong with something braised in Malbec wine), pork three ways (porkchop was slightly undercooked), pineapple tart( a nice rendition of pineapple upside down cake), and coffee creme brûlée. We also had a bottle of the local Syrah which was great. Overall I felt like the $35 was just slightly overpriced for the experience, but glad we got to check it out.
Vintage Kitchen does not disappoint. We appreciated that the Restaurant Week menu did not require numerous items at additional charge. A few of the other restaurants do this during Restaurant Week, and we do not patronize them, because they fail to adhere to the spirit of the occasion.
The food was outstanding particularly the pumpkin soup, beef and pork entrees. Only the pineapple "torte" tasted OK but was not attractively presented. Our server was in training and trying very hard.
