Just go for the wine, that’s what this place is known for. The paella dinner, which was touted, was nothing more than a watered down version of seafood risotto, with three shrimp, two clams and a few bites of chicken, too much cheese (you don’t put cheese on paella) and way too much salt.
Another great meal at Vino. Although we were there for Thanksgiving, we didn't try the holiday prix fixe menu & ordered from the regular & specials menu. Yum! I really enjoyed the BLT featuring the smoked pork belly. My dad loved the pretzel crusted calamari so much, I had to fight to get any for myself. Luckily they still were offering the salted caramel panna cotta for dessert. FAB! Dad has request we return soon.
I hadn't dined at Vino for years. But their Honolulu Restaurant Week menu looked nice and very reasonably priced. Since Chuck Furuya is a master sommelier, we figured the pair pairings would be good, and they were very good. The 4 course meal was rich in flavor. Chuck selected wines we had not heard of before, including wines from Sardinia and Greece. He came by each table and explained the wines. The pana cotta was rich and a wonderful way to end the dinner. Our dining experience made us realize that there's an excellent "local" Italian restaurant just down the street. We plan to return in a couple of weeks for a more "traditional" Italian dinner.
I was torn between 4 and 5 stars on most of the ranking categories. Overall I was very happy with the restaurant. All of the dishes I tried were delicious and the suggested wine pairings were all great. My only complaint is that the portions were rather small. I would prefer to pay a bit more and get a bit more. Even the pasta dish was small. C'mon--pasta is cheap; don't give me 11 noodles.
Despite that I would go back as everything else was really good.
Went with my wife, daughter, and her boyfriend and the food was delicious! We had the calamari, roasted Brussels sprouts, octopus, 0sso buco, truffled mc and cheese, Margherita pizza, and since it was restaurant week, I had their special prix fixe dinner with wine pairings. Every item was amazing! Also, the wine pairing were right on and complemented the tasting menu. Our waiter was pleasant and engaging. Would give it five thumbs up!!!
although we had reservations, we got the worst possible table, when other tables were available. the host finally changed our table after gentle prodding. waitress was not friendly, and seem tired. food was ok, not worth the trouble.
We were celebrating a record breaking sales month with top leaders of my team. I arrived early with flowers to be presented to them and Ann kindly hid them in a refrigerator to keep them fresh until the presentation. Ann and our server (forgot to get his name) checked on us frequently to see if everything was okay. The food and wine was excellent as usual. The appetizers are the bomb! I was so full I couldn't eat my entree or the dessert. My first time diners were impressed with the food and the fact that the boss man Chuck Furuya stopped by to chat with us. Everyone was very attentive to our needs! Can't wait to go back again!
Food is not as good as it used to be. Service is spotty. Hostess was very passive aggresssive fake nice. Had reservation but got seated at the most awkward table in corner by some stairs. Servers all had attitude like they're the best and don't really care about their foods. Yes they got one of the best wine selections on the island but NO cuz overall experience was a joke.
I love the location. It’s easy to find parking in the structure and they validate! The food was delicious, albeit the portions were smaller than expected. We enjoyed the random dad jokes by the manager. The place didn’t seem too busy but our server didn’t seem as attentive. It took a long time for her to take our orders and to bring out our checks. The manager came by to talk story with our group more often than the server came to check up on us
My husband and I LOVE this restaurant!! Chuck is a fabulous host and spends time talking to each customer. His wine pairing is right on! Service is excellent and food is delicious.
My 1 and only negative is that it is way, way too loud.
Idea: if sound buffers on the walls and ceilings were installed it would help immensely!
I realize it is a Bistro but at times we find ourselves yelling at our guests or each other to be heard (we are not too old - 60! and have good hearing).
Food and wine are unique and inventive. The server was far too attentive. It was difficult to savor the flavors and enjoy the last little bit before the plate was cleared and a new course placed in front of us. I felt rushed. Having just returned from Italy where the pace was slow and the patron must ask for the check, I left feeling like I was being pushed out so they could seat someone else.
The experience that my wife and I had here on our “date night” amazing. Finding places that truly understand and can accommodate her gluten allergy is often extremely difficult and costly, and typically VERY limited choices; not the case at Vino’s. We had tons of choices and suggestions of wine pairings and wines to try. From the servers to the owner and Master Sommelier we received some of the best service, attention to detail for our appetizers, entrees, and our shared dessert was not appealing to the eyes in it’s presentation, but filled our stomachs and our hearts. I say this because it was a night without the kids together enjoying each others company and sharing our delicious meals with each other. It also makes a difference and really does matter to us that Chuck and his staff takes great care and pride in supporting local and family owned businesses. Other-than the icecream, everything is bought from from local and/or family owned business and prepared and made by an amazing and award winning chief and staff. The wines that are some of Chucks favorites are the ones that came from the vinyards with a deep and rich family history of care and sustainability. Amazing wines rich in flavor, life, history, and all at an even more amazing price.
I can hardly wait to go back for the food, wine, and interaction with all of the staff. There are not enough stars to give this team, this family, the credit they all deserve.
We had a such a enjoyable evening dining with our friends at Vino. The waitress, Michiko, made some great recommendations for our dishes and wine selections. It was so nice of Ann to have greeted our guests and made everyone feel so welcomed. The octopus in ragu was fantastic.
This restaurant left a lot to be desired. It is scarcely authentic Italian food. Everything I ordered came out with pork, ham, etc meat sneaked into each dish. There was an over abundant wine list which seems to be what the restaurant cares most about considering the first 2-3 pages of the menu are all about wine. I would never dine here again and I am quite shocked to see it was rated a number one Italian restaurant in Honolulu. I am Italian and grew up on Italian food and have been to Italy several times and grew up in New York City with a very large Italian population and cuisine choices. I know what I am talking about.
The food is excellent here as is the service. These experienced restauranteurs are real pros at delivering a high quality dining experience at more than reasonable prices. The Happy Hour deals are awesome at 50% on all foods. Chuck Furuya has an astonishing good wine list and parings but that should not be a surprise. I highly recommend this establishment.
