Vinny Vanucchi's 'Little Italy' - Dubuque Ratings and Reviews
We read reviews and thought this would be a nice place for dinner with family from out of state. We were very disappointed. There were 7 of us and the only person who thought their meal was above average had a cheeseburger. The two that shared a pizza said it was flavorless and undercooked. The pasta dishes were ok but nothing special.
Overall Vinnys was pretty good but not great. Bruschetta was very good. Salad and garlic bread were also very good. Wife had the spaghetti and meatballs and really liked it. I tried a bite and it was pretty typical Italian resturant spaghetti so not too bad although my Noni's sauce will never be beat. The only problem I had was the Alfredo Chicken Fettuccine. Very bland sauce. Didnt taste like any cheese was in it just a white cream sauce. No seasoning on the chicken either which didnt help. I threw on the parmeasean and butter from the garlic bread basket and it was so much better for thosr two bites so that probably tells you all you need to know. Very cool building and ambience was pretty good. I'd go back but try something else.
Family visiting from the East coast was the occasion. They are foodies who love to experience local food and enjoy the ambiance of the Italian dining in downtown area. We all tried different dishes, enjoyed the camaraderie, and lingered long after. The service was great too. Thanks Vinny!
Driving through Dubuque on a trip. It was lunchtime so we looked on internet for reviews. This place was said to be good. I was surprised when we arrived with a reservation on a Sat at noon that the place had 3 tables filled. No ambiance. Hostess was short and abrupt and the waiter was oddly prepared to wait on us. He tried to explain the lunch special which we had seen at the door and was stammering around so much that we gave up and just questioned how much it was. He said at first 12.95 then changed his mind to 10.95. My husband just said ok and ordered it. I had the ravioli and my son had the meatball sandwich.
My initial disappointment was the waiter. He was terrible. Perhaps new? So I decided to just stop being annoyed. We got our lunch. My meat ravioli did not seem tender, but edible. What was the point of trying to complain to a waiter who was already unhelpful and unknowlegable. My sons meatball sandwich looked good and he said he was good. My husbands special was a seafood linguine and he said it was ok.
Then comes the bill. So the lunch special was billed at $15.95, it was neither of the prices quoted prior and it was not posted on the special board when we arrived so we were taking the waiters word for it. I brought it to his attention and he went and spoke to a manager, he came back and said he was sorry but that was the price. So instead of the manager taking $5 off for her employees mistake we had to pay it. The comment from the waiter was "I guess you learn something everyday", well I have learned not to stop here for food again when driving through Dubuque. What I did was instead of leaving a $8 tip on the bill I left a $3 tip.
Our selections were very good. The garlic bread was excellent, according to my friends. I had the gluten free pasta in a marinara sauce. Pasta was cooked perfectly. Salad prior to meal came with gluten free dressing. My companions thought their spaghetti entess we're delicious. The 4 stars on service was due to having to ask for a sugar substitute three times before receiving it and one of us asked for a water refill and never received it. It was not busy when we were there. Overall it is a great place for lunch or dinner.
Loved everything about this place. Great space...very large. Several sections and bars. We ate outside overlooking the river. (That section was still closed, but they very kindly set it up for us. And the waiter was very nice even though he had to run in and out. Thanks guys!) Everything we ordered was terrific. Pasta, pizzas, calamari, salad. My family is Italian, and I can be picky. Very authentic here. Nice beer selection. Good looking interior. Highly recommend.
Loved the atmosphere.
Food was good except didn't care for stuffed mushrooms. Very bready but lots of good cheese on top. I only ate half of one but husband ate the rest. Seafood pasta had a lot of sauce but we generally eat lighter so not used to that. Flavor good but scallops tiny. We would come back for the wine and ambience
The pizza was pretty tasty, and my husband enjoyed the meatball appetizer. Their wine list was a bit mediocre, and my husband had to ask, if they served any beer, and we just got a verbal beer list instead of their being any listed in a menu to review prior to ordering. The service was good. It was an ok place, but I'm not sure that we would go there again next time we are going to be in Dubuque.
We were at the Mississippi River Aquarium with our kids ages 9-18, and the staff there recommended Vinny Vanucchi's for lunch. We all enjoyed the "Little Italy" ambiance, and the food was very good. There is a main seating area and a bar, well separated from each other, so very kid-friendly. Close to museum, so were able to stop for lunch and go right back to the exhibits. Friendly staff.
we were traveling through Dubuque and Vinnys had a good review on Trip Advosor and Open Table. It was not very crowded and we got seated promptly. The garlic toast was some of the best I have had at a restaurant and the bowls of pasta my wife and I ordered were terrific...great sauces and the pasta was cooked just right...fast service too and good salads to start. Was a great choice for us...good location near our motel too.
Great Lunch .... small side salad and then my husband and I shared a pizza. Delicious. We really enjoyed the pizza (cheese and sausage), the sausage has a great flavor and kick to it (not overpowering, just not bland). Jordan was our server and she was excellent.
Our group met for a family get-together and represented a wide variety of tastes and ages. Without exception, everyone was very impressed with the food, the service and the atmosphere. This is one of my personal favorites in Dubuque. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes Italian food.
The bread and salad were soooo good! You could make a meal out of just that. But I did try other things. We actually ate here 2 nights in a row. The first night I had baked penne. I split it with my son as the portions are fairly large. Mom had eggplant parmigiana which she said was delicious. 2nd night I had pizza and mom had ravioli, both were delicious! Try their sangria too!
