$50 and over
Contemporary American
In its rustic eatery with wooden accents and distressed walls, Vinegar Hill House serves upscale modern American cuisine with an eclectic vibe. For starters, sample the baby gem lettuce salad with rye croutons, spring peas with hazelnuts and crème fraiche, or the chicken liver mousse with pistachios. Popular entrée options include the cast iron chicken with shallots and sherry jus, gnocchi with ramps and bacon, and curry and mint seasoned scallops with fava beans. To round out your meal, try Vinegar Hill House's pecan sticky buns or the farmstead cheese selection and wash it all down with the house cocktail made with rye, vermouth and grapefruit bitters. Vinegar Hill House also has a decadent brunch menu, with items like a biscuit sandwich with fried eggs, mortadella and honey and the pear sourdough pancakes.

I have always loved this restaurant and was thrilled when they started accepting reservations on OpenTable. VHH features a great cocktail menu and has a real mixologist behind the bar. The food is fantastic and always pleases. They've changed the presentation on the red wattle pork chop but the preparation is still heavenly and you have to make sure to leave room for guinness cake for dessert. Not the easiest location to get to, but well worth it once you've arrived.

I've been wanting to try Vinegar Hill House for awhile now and finally was able to try it for my birthday not too long ago. My guest and I ordered the cast iron chicken, the country chop, brussel sprouts and corn bread--all to share. Sadly I liked the sides the best. The entrees were a bit too salty for my taste. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice. When you walk into the restaurant, you immediately get a homey and comfy feel. This place is definitely a neighborhood gem. I would certainly go back if I lived or was in the neighborhood. However, I wasn't too wow-ed to make the trip again from Manhattan.

Thanksgiving food was amazing. Traditional menu served family style. One complaint was that it was a bit too expensive. Also, the menu was pre fixe, so the waitress did basically nothing. The one request we had for a bottle of wine was forgotten about for about half an hour. Anyway, we walked away feeling like we had eaten a true American thanksgiving feast. Two pieces of pie and all.

Our usual and much loved drop-in for when we go to St. Ann's . The food is solid, if is not quite as brilliant as it was in the past. The produce is delicious and one--from time to time-- can find a gem or two.

A refreshingly unique menu and really thoughtfully curated wine list. We had such a lovely meal and we were able to try a huge array of menu items - all were incredible! Some dishes were a little over salted, but each dish was as equally inventive yet homey. The atmosphere is really sweet, like a little neighborhood bistro. Each of the waitstaff were lovelier than the last, which can be hard to find in Brooklyn. I would visit VHH again and again!!

We went to Vinegar Hill House with a chef from India who wanted to try it! He was so impressed with the warm environment, the gracious staff and, of course, the food! The dishes were plentiful and delicious, and the staff and atmosphere were warm, friendly and incredibly welcoming. The chef came to our table, and we enjoyed every bite! My particular favorites were the corn bread (a must), the Brussels sprouts and the steak! A wonderful night...and a really special memory.

Had to come back again but this time we came for brunch. The food here is just amazing. Small menu but so much to choose from because everything is delicious. We had Shrimp and grits and the goat hash. Yummy! We made our reservation the night before which was a great idea cause otherwise we would have waited a while for a table. It's worth the wait though. We will be back!!!

If you're looking for simple, yet delicious food, in a special type of place... dine here. It's like walking into a fabulous neighborhood affair, where it's lively enough to make you feel like you want to go inside, but you're still able to have a conversation without shouting across the table to your guests. I came here after finding my wedding dress. My fiance had called ahead and surprised my entire party with champagne. I also had a friend that was vegetarian and she found more than enough to fill up on. The host and staff were so lovely and kind and the food came out hot and perfectly cooked. Everything was delicious and everyone raved about the meal. It was definitely extremely memorable.

Despite adding two to our party at the last minute, the staff at VHH took it all in stride, and took tremendous care of us! All the food was fabulous and we had a great sharing tastes and comparing. We never felt rushed despite the late hour. Can't recommend the VHH and the staff highly enough. Thanks to Open Table for helping us find another gem!

Great place at the far reaches of Vinegar Hill - near DUMBO. I had the baby carrots, Cast Iron Chicken and the cornbread. The cornbread is absolutely the best I've ever had. Excellent service and they shift the menu around so it's always something good.

Even though I ordered one of the best wines by the glass offered on the list, the wine was extremely sour and did not taste at all. While the food was fresh, it was very salty- especially the brussel sprouts and mushrooms. The service was initially very slow in coming.

My husband and I took friends from out of town to Vinegar Hill, knowing they would love the Red Wattle Chop (they did!) and the skillet chicken (yup!) and I got my chicken liver mousse fix (so good). But we made a new food discovery at VHH -- the blue cornbread with honey butter. We fought over it with our friends (Alabama natives, who know good cornbread), and ultimately ordered another. Completely delicious!

From the moment you walk into this turn of the century building, you are struck by the vintage atmosphere. We were seated and immediately attended to by a very endearing server. His recommendation on each dish was perfect. I had the arctic char that was cooked to perfection with side vegetables that burst with flavor and texture. My husband had the pork which was the server's recommendation. He went back to the kitchen to give his compliments to the chef that it was the best pork dish he had ever had. The appetizers were also creative and delicious. Desert just topped the night. The key lime pie and brownie were sublime. The wine for the price was nice. I can't wait to go back again and bring some foodie friends.

"we" had been to Vinegar Hill House since before it officially opened and had enjoyed dinner there regularly. Had a less than stellar experience 2 years ago and hadn't really been back. Decided to try it recently for a special occasion and was flat out disappointed when they didn't take the time to put a nice crisp on skillet chicken; also had brisket and watermelon - interesting combo but the brisket prepared just like St. Patrick's day - very odd. Sides were nice, but entrees a let down.

Just moved to the neighborhood from W village; limited # of options for post-9pm mid-week dining has taken some adjusting to. VHH is the first place I've found that combines good food, design, ambiance & service. Feels like a place that works both as a destination spot from manhattan/elsewhere and as a regular place for locals. Recommended.

This overpriced, very noisy but chicly decorated restaurant doesn't live up to it's reputation. Our drinks took nearly 15 minutes to arrive and were not made as we'd requested. The martinis were VERY dirty, and we'd requested them very dry. The food service was better, but the only notable item was the cornbread. I'd love to find the recipe as I don't intend to go back. The elements of our meals were bizarre. The heirloom tomato salad was mealy and mushy. The leg of lamb was 3 small slices, served with 3 paper thin shavings of what may have been a raw beet(?) and about 5 radishes (why?) over a dollop of mustard. Very strange & NOT worth $32. The chicken was a tiny li'l thing in a skillet w one small onion. Weird. VHH is a bit of a rip off.

We had a great brunch here! It's tucked away in a far corner of DUMBO, so it was a bit of a hike from the subway. Worth it. I had pork with grits, a poached egg and squash. The pork was tender and the texture of the grits was perfect. My 10 year old found the menu a little challenging, but they accomodated her with plain scrambled eggs and toast. Totally fine. We also split a strawberry pancake - German style with more of a custard texture. Delicious. The interior is well worn nostalgia with a modern sensibility. There's garden seating in the back. The service was friendly, but not overly.

We live in the neighborhood and used to love this place. But on Thursday evening the food was just okay and the service was awful. The restaurant was not busy and drinks took too long, all dishes got brought to the wrong person and we had to remind her about a bottle of wine we ordered. We weren't expecting four star service, just the basics of someone that is somewhat interested in making sure everything was handled correctly. And the food was just okay. Atrium down in Dumbo is a much better option (better food, service, ambience) for the same price.

A bit expensive but worth it for a special occasion. We were two people and we had two starters (cold cucumber soup and bass croquettes), two entrees (pastrami and country chop), a side (wild mushrooms with moustard sauce), two desserts (pannacotta and frozen yogourt) and a bottle of wine. It was $200 including tip. Everything was very good and every dish had a special touch on its flavour. Starters were quite small, but entrees were very generous.
