fantastic food... great staff! my new favorite place
A true find for foodies who can really appreciate a restaurant that tries real hard and delivers in every way. It's warm and inviting, yet not sleepy. A great vibe and atmosphere , attentive staff and the food is fresh and flavorful. Try the pastrami ribs! Try everything. This is Shelter Island's most delightful find. We already made a second reservation.
Wedding Anniversary dinner. On vacation from Atlanta. Lovely ambience and good food.
VSC is a great spot for a fine dining meal. We had a very pleasant experience. The food was excellent though the mushroom risotto my wife had was way more mushroom than risotto. While the room is romantically lit, it could use a bit more illumination. Service was excellent and attentive and each course came promptly. My bouillabaisse was wonderful with massive prawns and a big half lobster tail. Truly delicious!
Vine Street has been on Shelter Island, and the fod in th epast 10 or so years has ALWAYS been something special. The mussels as well as the duck confit and the boullabaise are PERFECT.
Service wonderful. This place is a classic.
We arrived 15 minutes early for our 7:00pm reservation. I advised the manager, who was sitting two of us, that we had reservations made with Open Table, he proceeded to sit us in the worst possible table available. They had ample sitting available in a spacious and beautiful outdoor space as well as more open tables inside, yet he proceeded to sit us in a tiny, tight, corner table against a wall. Very cramped and uncomfortable. I got up from the table and told him that I had reservations and that the table was unacceptable. To his benefit he moved us to a more open table, but in the path of the folks entering the restaurant. Not ideal sitting but better than the initial sitting. Not right that they treat Open Table patrons so poorly. Open Tabel patrons should be treated better, if anything, since users will report our experiences and are regular diners who will return, if treated properly. I ordered the duck confit, their signature dish, which a lot of other diners ordered. Very good and well cooked, but the mere two duck legs were served with rice, but the rice serving had to be two tablespoons worth. Extremely small sizes serving overall, especially the two tablespoons of rice. Never knew white rice could be so expensive to provide. The grilled octopus appetizer consisted of 3 tiny pieces in a tomato purée. Very good but extremely small serving. My date ordered the seared scallops, which consisted of 3 scallops. Again, good but portions were extremely small. Very small wine list. Food was good but the servings were pathetically small and very, very expensive. Not worth the value due the extremely high price and extremely small portions. Place was full with well heeled folks, well dressed and all driving luxury cars, obviously there for the high reputation of the place, but it's overrated.
We were a party of 6 seated at a nice round table in the front corner. Our server was local to shelter island and absolutely delightful. We had a delicious meal. I would highly recommend Vine Street. Don't tell too many people. I want to be able to get a reservation in the future! 😀
We come here often and it is very solid. Lovely ambiance and great service. We had a great calamari salad and I had a fantastic salmon and my wife had the potato crusted Halibut, also very good. The drinks are great. My only qualm is that it is pricey.
The best restaurant on Shelter Island. The food, the ambience and the service are simply superb!
Super spot and never disappoints!! Entire staff is extremely courteous and professional. Food delish..
As always we had a great experience.
Food consistently excellent. Great bartender and wine list. Some nice new additions to the menu, too.
I love having dinner at the Vine Street Cafe. My son was home from college and I told him we would go over there for dinner one evening before the summer crowds. We went over on a Thursday and it was great. Food was spectacular as always.
Food was very good. Service was exceptional and ambiance was perfect. We had made a stop there on a recommendation of a dear friend and this place did not let us down. The staff was courteous and efficient. Food was well prepared and delicious. I would recommend to anyone passing through Shelter Island. I would definitely add it to your Bucket list !! Worth the trip.
We loved the service and the food
Enjoyed the exciting food and presentation
presented expertly and cooked to perfection
A comfortable and cozy Home atmosphere for a fabulous Dinner.
A wonderful experience on the island!
This restaurant gets lots of good reviews for absolutely no reason, the food is just average at best , service is good but nothing exceptional and the ambiance is good , but this restaurant is way too expensive for what it is , it is just a simple bistro charging 3 stars prices!!!!!
Food was very good and portions were generous. The service was amateurish.
Well, Maybe it was an off night. They honored our Rez on time which was appreciated. Service was very nice. The food for all four of us was fine....good.... but disappointing for having such a great reputation. An island destination with ferries involved, well I doubt we'll take the chance in the busy season. Cocktails were great ..............oh well.
Good isn't worth the ferries.
Always a great experience.
We used to go to Vine Street for extra special meals because everything was outstanding but now, it's just a good go to place. Pricey for that. The quality of the meals are good, but they lack that extra special thing that made it so wonderful in earlier years. I am sorry to post this but maybe it's a wake up call and the owners will make magic happen again.
After a winter away, the return to vine street was a delight, practically a revelation: food with flavor!
Not one aspect of dinner went awry; our reservation was honored immediately ( on a busy Saturday night ) with a favorite table, no delay with water and drink requests, a perfectly handled minor menu substitution, and 'side sauce' request, expertly timed dishes out of the kitchen and plates bused away. All dishes were cooked as if there were a chef in the kitchen looking after us exclusively, and using the finest, freshest ingredients possible; from simple salads to steaks and fish, quality reigns. The wine list, among the best organized and well priced, on the east end or in the city, is an added and well appreciated attraction.
It's a real pleasure to come back to a restaurant we've known literally from 'day one' and find it getting better with time.
Thank you all, and well done.
It bodes well for a great summer.
As always, Vine Street brought it's A game. I do not make it out to Shelter as often as I would like, but never once has a visit gone by without me making time for this fantastic spot.
As others have noted, the Bolognese was excellent, can't go wrong with that! Also enjoyed the calamari salad. Hope to go back again. Thanks!
This is our second dinner at Vine Street Cafe. Cannot wait for the next time!
We absolutely loved the Vine Street Cafe. The ambiance was peaceful, food was fabulous and the employees were amazing. Everything about our evening was perfect. What we all loved the best was that the food was delicious, but you never had that overstuffed after dinner feeling.
Great food. Service was top notch.
First time there and had an amazing meal, wonderful service and brought a great bottle of wine. Highly recommend it.
I have eaten here several times, never had a bad experience. The calamari salad was soggy and the flavor was off. 3 of four entrees were terrible. There was a "mushroom and truffle risotto" that should have just been called vegetable risotto. It had peas, carrots and bok choy and no truffle flavor or intoxicating smell as one is accustomed to when eating something with truffle. The escargot with squid ink pasta was dry and tasteless. And the fried chicken- which we thought how could it be wrong- had this burnt up sauce on top of it and the grits weren't seasoned properly. The filet mignon was fine- but $50 is pretty steep. Won't be going back.
Enjoyed the prix fixe meal and it was terrific. Fresh ingredients, well presented and prepared. Server was attentive and not imposing. One of my favorites on Shelter Island.
I had a business dinner here late in the evening.
there are lots of fish selections as well as meats. prices are what you would expect on Shelter Island. Service was sharp.
Have been to vine street several times and usually meet friends here as a halfway point between the south and north fork. Usually order from the price fix menu. Meal was lackluster. Had the steak and it had little to no taste. Always loved the French fries, these were also tasteless. They have been closed for about two weeks for "renovation " but the place looks the same. I have had better meals here in the past. Except for seeing our friends the restaurant wasn't worth getting on a ferry to eat dinner. Maybe they just had bad Sunday night?
I have been a huge Vine St. fan, long before it became a destination dining spot; however, the last several times that I have been in the past year, the food and the service have been closer to mediocre than to outstanding. I love everything about Vine St: the fabulous space, great SI location, reliable menu of interesting local eats, and because it is a "Hamptons" restaurant, it will likely lose little business, but for mine, the staff and kitchen need to pick it up a notch. (Important post-script: Thank you, to Chef/Owner Terry Harwood, who responded to my teen daughter's note about a disappointing menu change by emailing her that he would restore the beloved and award-winning Perciatelli Bolognese.)
Try as we might to like this restaurant, it's really just another Hampton's outpost serving a variation of overpriced nouvelle American cuisine. People love the place, but we've been three times and never had a memorable meal.
We had the best, intimate, fun New Years Eve ... with my family and friends in a full restaurant. Service was wonderful, food amazing!
The food is always good, the staff friendly and polite. We live nearby, and love that Vine Street is so close by. We're lucky to have a restaurant in the neighborhood with such high standards that serves fresh, and delicious food!
How can I not confuse family with friends?
Vine Street Café is always wonderful! We look forward to coming here as often as we can!
This is a very consistent place and the service is outstanding.
Always a wonderful experience! It feels like home every time we are there!
