Vine Street Cafe
Fabulous experience from start to finish.
Great round table for six
One of the best East End!
hands down, our favorite dining experience out on eastern long island.
A delight to find a spot on Shelter Island that had an all-year-round feel. Sophisticated and service orientated with very very good food. Beautiful dining room and bar. Formal but with a very relaxed and comfortable vibe.
This restaurant does lovely food, and the decor is beautiful, but the service and ambiance need a lot of work. We were barely greeted and we felt rushed and unwelcome. The staff appeared hassled and the overall feeling was not friendly. It felt more like a NYC restaurant trying hard to be cool, and we were on Shelter Island to relax and get away from that kind of vibe. Also, we felt it was a bit overpriced. Some things were priced fairly, but others were way off. We don't mind paying for quality food, which this obviously is, but our bill was too expensive for what we had, especially when the island offers other very good dining options, even in the off season.
Great fixed price dinner 3 courses very reasonable wonderful desserts included incredible service warm and inviting atmosphere a really nice Saturday evening out
Food is very consistent, well flavored and a good variety with nighty specials that are excellent. We especially love the Bouillabaisse and Miso Glazed Salmon.
The food, service and ambiance were very good! The crispy calamari salad was delicious. The New York strip steak was surprisingly a bit fatty and quite a thin cut for a $52 price tag. It was nicely cooked, but for a portion like that, I think they should lower their price a bit, or get a purveyor who offers a higher quality piece of meat. The fries and grilled onion sides were very tasty.
Took over an hour to get our food. Our waitress was awful. We asked for the check. She came back 2 minutes later asking us if we asked for the check or if we asked for more time to eat. She just was not very attentive and I believe she forgot to place our food order.
It was great as always ! A little loud when it’s busy but food is awesome as usual
Restaurant was expensive compared to others near this location. Drinks were at nyc prices and very sparing—martini glass brought to table 3/4 full. Chicken was dry and fries greasy. Cost of a single entree started in mid 30s and most eee in 40&50s—even pot pie. Was not impressed.
The beet salad with pea tendrils was possibly the best beet salad I've had! The mussels were great! And the desserts were wonderful! All in all, a lovely dining experience on a cool, gray, rainy day. Nice and warm inside!
we used to really like it here. it has always been pricey but was top quality food and now the food isn't what it was. Maybe there is a new chef. disappointing.
Everything was wonderful… The dinner, the wine, the service.
Food always good, service great. Menu is getting a bit tired, hasn’t changed much in a very long time. Still a great meal.
Had a pleasant experience, but it’s very pricey.
Matt greeted us, sat us and waited on us. Though we had not been to Vine St Cafe in well over a year, he could not have been more welcoming. He was warm, knowledgeable and so helpful. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience! We will be back very soon. Beet salad is a MUST!!! Fries are the best on the planet.
Wonderful wait staff. Cozy table. Excellent calamari salad and chateaubriand!
Delicious if a bit pricey. Great service and menu.
Great place and great food just deceivingly casual for the very expensive prices....
Warm, friendly and great food. I like the ambience.
Not Fancy. But finished.
Just wish they wouldn’t serve beer in cans. Get a tap or pour it into a beer glass. Cans make it feel low brow
Excellent meal, excellent service from the entry to departure.
We loved the food and the experience.
Food and service were really outstanding, the place was packed on New Year's Eve but that didn't hinder quality of food or service at all. Loved our waitress, she was a gem. She answered every question, (and we had a few), with humor and patience and she was very gracious and helpful all evening. Considering the place was so busy, I was impressed at how quickly we received our meals.
The only complaint I have is that the tables are still so close together in the first dining area. I thought that would change somewhat over the years as you have expanded. I don't like being on top of other diners and being privy to their conversations. Seriously, it's the only thing keeping Vine St. from being absolutely perfect. Still the food and menu are AMAZING... everything from apps to dessert. I love that the menu is NOT run of the mill,...wonderful...so thank you for a very enjoyable New Year's Eve dining experience.
Eat here several times a year and usually it's good, not great and expensive. This time was very disappointing, my wife had halibut that was over cooked and dry. For a $43 entree that's unacceptable. I had duck and it was way too greasy (even for duck).
If you spend $250 for two at dinner it should be much better than this was. Talk about poor value...
One of our favourite restaurants. The food is outstanding and never disappoints, the wine list is good and the staff are friendly and attentive. Well worth the drive!
We love this place for it's consistency and ambiance. Much nicer in the off season so you don't have to fight for a table. Winter time is cozy at Vine Street, relaxing and super discrete.
Hadn't been here in awhile and was looking forward to it. Love the ambiance this time of year. Food was so-so to disappointing.
Usually we order meat and we didn't this time. Next time will stick to steak or lamb.
If you are fortunate to go here for dinner be sure to try the crispy calamari salad. It's amazing, frisee lightly tossed with a carrot ginger dressing and very light and crispy calamari. A favorite of many diners. All of our meals were fantastic! We had the filet mignon au poivre, the classic bolognese, the bay scallop gratin and the potato crusted halibut. Not our first time there and definitely not our last.
Good but pricey
We had the chateaubriand with side dishes and they were cooked to perfection.
I have to give a '3' to service. It might have been the waiter's first day, but he could not answer most questions. The most depressing was when we asked the waiter to describe the dish, he read off the the side accompaniment of the main dish on the menu rather than describing what the dish actually is! He knew very little about the menu including the desserts, and no suggestions on wine.
I have stopped ordering scallops at Restaurants because they are usually overcooked or just not that flavorful. The scallops here were presented in the shell in a light but delicious sauce with spinach and bacon but were perfectly cooked. The other dishes (filet and tuna tartare) were also perfectly cooked and were accompanied with tasty sauces that complemented but did not overpower the main dish.
Vine street is still a pleasant experience but their new prices put it at a level comparable to celebrity chef restaurants in Manhattan and it is not where they started or where they are now... unfortunate. I will only eat there rarely from now on as there is better value elsewhere.
Always delicious and fresh. Highly recommend!
I had to send back my risotto as it lacked any flavor, but was promptly served a salad instead. Waitress was very apologetic and sweet.
Lovely restaurant, very good service, and very good food. I found it to be a bit pricey (and I live in NYC, so that's saying something), but I'd go back for sure.
Really good food! Lovely ambiance. Pleasant service.
we arrived early (5:30) because our schedule changed on a Sunday night so we were fortunate that the restaurant was not very crowded then. Service was excellent, but food magnificent. Must be the best restaurant in the greater Hamptons area. Ambiance very cozy, esp in autumn.
As always good food, but not so good as to justify the $$.
Have been twenty times. The service and ambiance are very pleasant but the food doesn’t stand out as anything special and regular dining value is lackluster. I can recommend the 3 course Prix Fixe menu at $35, served daily when open except holiday weekends (which recently included Columbus Day, Monday, Oct 8). Unfortunately the on-isle restaurant pickings are slim on weekdays out of summer season.
