Always a great place for dining, especially the oyster selection. Great ambience.
We had separate dinners due to my wife’s entree arriving 20 minutes after mine. No excuse except the kitchen made a mistake. They thought they rectified the unpleasant experience by offering to comp my wife’s small entree. Too little too late and we probably won’t be going back and it’s been a favorite restaurant since moving to North Carolina two years ago.
Vin Rouge is where we take special friends, for special occasions. Excellent food, knowledgeable and attentive service. Expensive, but worthwhile. It was a little louder than usual, and we could have done without the background music making it harder to converse. However, we will continue to take our special visitors there, and go for anniversaries and birthdays. Delicious!
Visited New Years Eve. Restaurant busy, but not totally full. Dining room sparsely decorated evoking a French theme. Open kitchen and there was a substantial amount of smoke drifting into the dining room. The outside temp being cold and their being busy could be contributing factors, but regardless it seems this should be a fixable problem. The lingering smoke made for an uncomfortable evening in the restaurant. Waitress was not particularly apologetic. The food we tried was well prepared. Not an inexpensive place to eat-would not risk dining there again.
As usual, Vin Rouge did not disappoint! We have dined here many times over the years and it is one of our absolute favorite spots in Durham. Trendy new restaurants come and go, but Vin Rouge remains a solid choice and an oasis of classic fine dining in a very saturated market. Interesting wine list (but they also allow you to bring your own wine for a corkage fee), beautiful preparation and presentation, nice balance of favorite menu items with specials. Wait staff is attentive without being overbearing. As with most restaurants with high ceilings and exposed brick, it's rather noisy (which may not bother the young folks but it's a sad consideration for those of us in the senior set), and the parking can be problematic. But you'll never have a bad meal and you will feel well taken care of when you visit Vin Rouge.
Favorite menu items: Liver & Onions, Pork & Red Cabbage, Mussels, Sweetbreads, and the Cassoulet is fantastic! Absolutely authentic--savory, and cooked to perfection.
Wonderful, as always. It's the only restaurant in the universe, as far as I know, that has a daily special on sweetbreads. They were particularly good this time. What a lovely feature!
Excellent meal from delicious cream of celery soup, to gooey apple bread pudding with carmel sauce and real whipped cream!
Our first visit to Vin Rouge was New Years' Eve - 2017. The food was great! We've eaten at lots of restaurants in France. Some of the best French onion soup was Alsace restaurant in Paris. Vin Rouge matches the same as in Paris.
I wish they had lunch hours. We'll return many times!
Brunch was relaxing and delicious!
Waitress was not friendly.
