Vin Rouge Ratings and Reviews
We tell people that this is the best French restaurant in the Triangle and it never disappoints. Food is spectacular, whether you want exquisite French (e.g. Trout Amandine) or comfort food (e.g. Mac and Cheese with Gruyere). Great oysters, too! Authentically French in decor but American in service.
I made the reservation well in advance.
We were given a table next to the kitchen
We had no tablecloth
There was yelling over our heads to the wait staff . Very unprofessional. Very noisy.
The entrance door was opened to let out excess kitchen smoke
Cigarette smoke then came in and hit our table and others
I had to ask twice to get the door closed
We did not have a good experience and would not return to the restaurant.
Vin Rouge is a gem in Durham. A truly authentic French cuisine greets you, with many surprises. Escargot is amazing btw.
The service is top notch as well. Staff know the dishes and make recommendations. Took our server's recommendation for the hangar steak and was glad I did. One of the best steaks I have ever had. My daughter is part vegan and the chef prepared her a special vegetarian dish not on the menu.
We had friends visiting from Pittsburgh and we took them to Vin Rouge ....even though we were worried about the noise level ......the last 2 times we were there it was so noisy we had to shout over the music . However on Tuesday night we had a quiet corner table and there were several empty tables so it was quieter than last time and we were able to catch up with our good friends who we had not seen in a while . Food was excellent and our server , Roy, was great .
Service was less than satisfactory. On two occasions waitress took unfinished dish without asking if we are done and later she did the same with wine glass with wine still in it. Almost looked like they were trying to rush us out.
It was my wife birthday, which I specified in reservation. And they did not acknowledge it. Over the years in many restaurants there was always some sort of "surprise" which was very nice. But not this time.
My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here. We were sat promptly. We were taken care of throughout the entire meal. There are several options for seating. We sat in main area. A bit busy and a little loud but we like the hustle and bustle. There was also patio seating and more romantic out of the way tables for those who want something more quiet. Our oysters were perfect. Chef gave us a couple extra for our anniversary. Our food was delicious, my husband had the hanger steak and I had the trout. Felt that for the value we would definitely return and recommend.
Took my daughter and her friends out for Brunch. It is located close to Dukes East Campus so a convenient eating spot to take college kids. Love the look of the restaurant, nice interior but also has outdoor seating. Enjoyed brunch. Will definitely on our next visit try it for dinner.
We went with friends to celebrate friend’s achievements. The restaurant was a wonderful choice. Excellent food, good variety, good wine list. We shared the classic mussels, then had fish special, salmon, calves liver, good desserts too. Would recommend for special occasions.
Food was just ok! They ran out of some items on the regular menu - so annoying when the see their reservations in advance! Way too dark!! If you feed guests in the dark I always wondered if you're trying to hide something also if you insist on such incredibly dim lighting it would be really nice to offer a menu that is either back lit or has some sort of lighting attached. The entire restaurant was filled with people pulling out their iPhones to use the flashlights - I was blinded three times during dinner. Incredibly unpleasant definitely will not be heading back to this restaurant
We were greeted by the host right away and seated outside in the garden area. We thought the garden area would be a good idea because it was a nice evening, but our earlier experiences in the dining room were far better. The ambience is much better inside and our experience with service inside has always been better. The table was on a slope, it was too dark to see the menu or wine list and we had to use a cell phone flashlight to read the menu, the staff was constantly dumping water or other liquids in the planted area behind our table, a door to the restaurant that was opened every minute or so squeaked loudly and in general the ambience outside was not good. The service was okay -- not bad -- we just expected more based on prior visits. The baked clams were delicious, as was the tapenade -- but the bread was average at best. My wife had monk fish that was cooked perfectly. I had a steak that, while cooked well, lacked flavor. Vin Rouge is a very good restaurant and certainly we will go back.
The food was great (moules especially) even if the specials weren’t completely successful ( fried sweetbreads were overdone, “crunchy” throughout). The service was fine until we were served our bill (without asking) along with our desserts. We hadn’t overstayed our visit and after spending $100 per person for the meal this was a decidedly un-French-bistro like practice. I appreciate the desire to turn tables quickly but do not expect such treatment at the high end of dining options.
