As always, delicious food and superlative service!
We had not been to Vin Rouge in a couple of years. Although the food was good, the prices were a bit high for the value. More noticeable was the service, which was mediocre at best and the courses we're sloooow. To compound the inadequate service, due to the size of our party (only 6), a 20% service charge was added to the check-far more than the quality of service warranted. Finally, the lighting in our dining area was so poor, we had to use our cell phone flashlight to read the menu. Still good, but Vin Rouge has come down a few notches since our last visit.
Food and service was spectacular. Little disappointed where our table was located. It was in a very busy area.
I have been to VR several times, but i have to say I will not be going back after the experience my party had last Thursday evening. The service was HORRIBLE!!! Our waitress was not only rude, impatient, an attitude, but was also terrible in the actual service:
1) did not serve food to everyone at the same time, one couple didn’t get their salad until the rest of us received our entree
2) waitress did not ask us how we liked our food or if it was prepared properly
3) waitress did not serve a plate of food properly, but rather slid it onto the table b
4) waitress said “oh Jesus” under her breath when one of our party asked her to go to the next person to order food.
5) do I really need to go on?
The food is excellent. Had the strip steak. Perfectly seared on the outside and very tender inside. The frites are very crispy and tasty. I had the classic mussels also and they are excellent. Great sauce for sopping with the french bread. I also like the chocolate torte. Excellent meal.
The service was great. He was always there at the right. The water glass was always full. This is a great place for a special occasion.
Great for my roommates birthday!
Great food and atmosphere , the apple bread pudding for dessert is incredible
What French cuisine does with eggs is amazing.
I had really high hopes for this place based on its accolades and number of stars. The space is small and intimate and hot as the kitchen is right in the middle of the entryway. I'm not one to skimp on prices when it comes to fine dining but the first thing I noticed was the cocktail list and alcohol markup was extraordinary. I won't list specific examples here but if you know anything at all about craft beer or well liquor you'll be keen to pick up on how overpriced the bar is. The oysters we took on as an appetizer were fine. The cocktail sauce was delicious with just enough horseradish and the mignonette was on point. This is where our joy in the evening ended. The place was busy there is no question, but when you have the sort of reputation that this place does I expect attentive service. We were never brought water or bread until we asked for them after our appetizer. We decided to split the trout almondine and see if we wanted to order more from there. I wish I could tell you that I actually tasted trout in my dish because all I tasted was limit bitter, palate blowing, acidic lemon. the pomme puree was lukewarm and flavorless as were the green beans that accompanied it. the texture of the sliced almonds felt like they came right out of a bag of salad starters. The breaking point with the service is never once did the server ask is how I meal was. Overall just very disappointing we did not order a second course or a dessert. It took an entirely separate snack elsewhere to reset my palate and get the overwhelming taste of lemon out of my mouth. A disappointing experience in a city that I love to visit.
I have been coming to Vin Rouge for over five years now for special occasions but also everyday dining. I have always enjoyed the food and the service . The restaurant is a little gem in Durham that is just adding to the foodie scene!
Dinner before broadway at the DPAC
My family of four recently ate at Vin Rouge prior to a performance at DPAC. Wow, what an amazing find! The ambience is lovely with it's wood floors, linens, candlelight and warm painted walls. Although crowded, it wasn't too loud and we could easily converse without having to raise our voices. Tables are not too cramped either. The service was fantastic and not stuffy at all. The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home and were very helpful with the menu. The food was divine. I highly recommend the oysters gratinee as an appetizer for a group of four. My husband declared it his new favorite dish and could have eaten the whole thing himself if he didn't have an entree coming. My very talkative son got the classic moules (mussels) with pommes frites. We didn't hear from him until his bowl was empty. My daughter is vegetarian and the chef prepared a special plate for her with seasonal vegetables. The presentation was beautiful and she really enjoyed it. I had the fish of the day which was cooked perfectly and so delicious. Using a piece of bread to soak up every last bit of sauce was not frowned upon. My husband had the bouillabaisse and mistakenly asked if any of us wanted to try it. Fantastic. He had some room left for dessert after sharing, haha. Finally, the creme brûlée was outstanding, along with various coffees. I can't wait to return!
Just wonderful. Great food and impressive French wine list. Classic French atmosphere. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff. It’s our go-to place every time we are traveling to the Raleigh/Durham area.
Second time there for Sunday brunch. Food was excellent which was why we returned. We were later this time and it appears that they may suffer from a small kitchen for the number of diners. The wait for our food was a little longer than we anticipated.
My husband & I made reservations for a Sunday brunch before a play at DPAC. Service was excellent, did not feel rushed, had plenty of time to get to show with an 11:00 Am reservation. Parking is not great- we parked across the street at Harris Teetor. The bloody Mary's made very well. My husband ordered the mushroom omelet, comes with small salad, he enjoyed very much.I had the poached eggs with asparagus, very good, would order again. The bread and butter they serve is excellent. We shared apple bread pudding for dissert with coffee, very fresh and was a great ending to excellent meal.
Reminded me of my trip to Paris. Food was awesome! Ambiance was awesome! And I converted 4 friends into French food lovers in one meal. We’ll be back 👍🏽
With every course I had a new favorite dish. Wish we lived closer!
The best oysters that I have ever eaten and I have had them up and down the East Coast including Key West! I can not stay enough about this place. Great teamwork with water refills, wine, and bread. All food was cook perfectly and the steaks were spot on with the temps that were requested. It was such a great decision to come here before a show at the DPAC. The total dinner experience plus front rows seats for The phantom of the Opera was just over the top!!! My wife and I had the best date night ever!! Thank you very much for taking such great care of us and we could tell that all employees genuinely love their job there. The whole kitchen staff said a huge “Thank You”! on our way out! WOW!!
The food was delicious and the service was wonderful!
I try to go to Vin Rouge whenever I can be in the area. It is a fabulous restaurant with great food, service, and value. I wouldn't change a thing!
Horrible Service, I will never dine here again. I feel as though I was being racially profiled and was given terrible service. I have dined at Forbes and Michelin rated restaurants and this has by far been the worst experience. Server took 20 mins to come to our table and she had an attitude and did not even introduce herself. Very nonchalant for a place of business, I would not recommend.
We had a great time at Vin Rouge. Food was very good.
The onion soup is terrific. Also enjoyed the mussels and lemon tart.
I have always enjoyed meals at Vin Rouge in the past. On this visit, however, I was disappointed in the mahi-mahi special and wished I had ordered something else. My fish was incredibly salty, perhaps due to a(n unnecessary) hazelnut broth on everything, or a rub, perhaps? I sent it back and the kitchen kindly brought me another serving. The individual ingredients, when recited by the server, sounded great; but i found the dish to be trying to "do too much," and flavors of fish and sauce and beet salad and vegetables all merged together in a not-that-pleasant way. Next time I will order an old favorite, like the salade nicoise!
Great food and service. Awesome atmosphere! Recommend the prix fix menu
It is the best brunch..great dinner as well. Service is always spot on, and the food is perfectly cooked.
Excellent meal, warm enough to dine on the patio, will return.
Nice armosphere, friendly staff, nine outdoor seating area. Have been for both lunch and dinner. Enjoyed both occasions.
Creative and excellent French Bistro in the middle of a college town. Great Food, Great Wine, Great Services, and even better reasonable prices. Can't wait to go back.
Past visits have been memorably good. This visit a BIG disappointment. I ordered my favorite dish, the cotes du porc. The chop was over 1/2 gristle and fat. Had I not been there on business I would have sent it back. The sauce was barely flavorful. The red cabbage, which has always been outstanding, was ordinary this time, like you would expect from a can. The creamed spinach, which also has been delicious, was almost tasteless this time. I was amazed that the restaurant could 'fall off the cliff' so badly on EVERY dish! We have always liked Vin Rouge but are now reluctant to return. If we do, I will take a few bites of what I order and, if it is of no better quality than what I had on this experience, I will get up and leave...never to return.
My husband and I were in town for a concert and went to Vin Rouge for brunch. Everything was fantastic! My eggs with smoked salmon was delicious and I could not stop eating the frites. Bloody Mary and French 75 drinks were made to perfection. Finally, the staff were super! Friendly, helpful and efficient. Smiles all around!
Had a great Sunday brunch here. The food was excellent and very well prepared. I wouldn't hesitate to do dinner next time we are in Durham. We opted to move to the back "red" room for a little less clamour. The front also got fairly smoky while we were eating. The hostess was on point in explaining these quirks to us before we were seated and was happy to accommodate.
This has been one of our go to restaurants, we've loved it but this dinner this night was disappointing. I ordered the special for dinner and our server came back a few minutes later to tell me were out of it, not her fault, but the kitchen should tell the staff that there only xx number left so they can let the diner know. My husband ordered Hendicks & tonic & was told they no longer stock it, he then ordered a Maker's Mark manhattan and the server came back & said they no longer stock that either. He wasn't thrilled with the substitute they recommended. Unfortunately, can't recommend as highly as we have in the past.
Ate dinner here before show at Carolina Theater. The French Onion soup is fantastic and great cocktails!
Again our Valentine's Day +1 at Vin Rouge was wonderful. As always the food is superb and what we like is the perfect pacing of the meal. Fast food it is NOT :).
The valentines day meal was absolutely amazing, a very nice menu and the options were fantastic, they really covered all the bases for a wonderful valentines day meal. The staff was very friendly and quick, we got seated almost immediately and our food was out in no time. You only saw smiles from the fellow restaurant goers, and you left with a sense of joy and fulfillment from the wonderful flavors you just had. I will be returning as much as I can.
Great food. Knowledgeable server. Always a delight
Amazing food and dessert, thought the tables were a little too close together though
Very good meal. Good basic salad, but not special. Salmon and steak fritte were very good. Dessert was excellent. Excellent service.
Once again, our meal at Vin Rouge was great. We've been going there for special occasions for many years, and are alway astounded that without fail their food is so consistently excellent. We love the place not only because of its food, but also because it is so much like an authentic French bistro. An important part of our beloved Durham.
