Vin Antico Ratings and Reviews
I planned a little birthday dinner for a friend on a Thursady night. We were all excited to eat here. Server was slllooowww to greet us. They were out of water glasses. Drinks and wine were fine but server didn’t notice when our glassses were empty. Food was fine but not amazing for 3 of us. For the 4th of us, the flank steak with prawns was served with ice cold prawns. Dinner was nearly gone before the server came back to check on us. The manager did remove the flank steak from our check which was appreciated.
Loved the cozy ambiance and always willing to overlook a kitchen mistake and chock it up to an off night, but the sub par service ruined it for us. Bummer.
I had suspicions when we sat down and the table next to us was looking hungry, board, and with empty drinks. When the service did come, they were perfectly friendly. Unfortunately, I suspect the kitchen was very backed up and it seemed that there were only two servers for the entire restaurant. It took a very long time to put an order in, an even longer time to get the food, and there was never an offer to refill our drinks (though the busser was on it with water refills). The burrata with toast points came with burnt, toasted sandwich bread; the scallops were tasty but overdone, the fries were plentiful and the broccolini was alright - pretty heavy on the lemon juice. I don't think we'll go back, but based on the crowd I don't think they will miss our business either.
We loved the food and service but were a little disappointed because we had looked at the menu on line and were looking forward to the mussels and claims and the calamari fritti and neither was available the night we were there even though they were listed on the online menu.
This was our second visit to this restaurant- the first maybe 2 years ago where everything was great. What a lot has changed. We wondered why we were able to get a reservation at 7.30 on a Friday night at 6.45. When we arrived the restaurant was about 1/3 full. We learned why. We were seated at a private table at the end- which we were offered and accepted without realizing while seemingly more romantic and private was by the constantly opening and closing kitchen door, next to the register and on route to the bathroom. Next the bar- it appears to be a full bar but they when I ordered my first drink- no citron vodka. okay how about Jack Daniels. No- they didn't carry that either. Bars that try/want to be different and only carry boutique alcohol brands- which are more expensive than the usual ones- are annoying. I ordered a Manhattan with whatever they deemed was there house bourbon- for which they charged me over $13.
Next we ordered a charcuterie and cheese platter. Delicious but way overpriced when we saw it- extremely small for its $21 price tag and it arrived with just 3 small pieces of bread. We asked for more bread. We had just taken our first piece of cheese each and were waiting for our bread when they brought our main courses over. How difficult is it to manage when you fire a dish in a restaurant that is 2/3 empty. I sent them back- so of course they sat out staying warm for the next 15 minutes while we ate the appetizer. The additional bread arrived as we finished the last piece. When we got them the mains were fine- not amazing but nothing wrong with them other than they had sat out for at least 15 minutes. Small portions so poor value. The last straw was the wine by the glass - all very expensive- surely you can provide the choice of one red wine that is under $13?. We ordered a glass of the $13 pinot instead of the $18 one- but the bill showed they had charged us $18. At that point we just paid and left. We would not return
I keep trying to like Vin Antico and it always falls flat. The first few times I went there I was a single diner and thought that might be the issue. This time I brought two friends and still had a mixed experience. Food is fairly good but the service is never on point and they get freaked out by special requests (not wildly crazy ones). For example, I once asked for a single cheese for dessert vs. the whole plate. Was painful getting that set up. I will not go back even though I am in San Rafael once a month for business.
We took a chance and chose this great little restaurant to have a gals dinner night, celebrating 2 birthdays. One of our gluten-free guests was happy to see so many food choices that worked for her. Everyone else enjoyed the menu of wagyu burgers, pork chop, fresh fish and chicken dishes. We almost had all the dessert selections and had a great time. Our waitress was very helpful. The ambiance was cozy and pretty, not stuffy or too fancy. The food and service made it even more special.
The food here is absolutely delicious. The menu is a combination of classic combinations reworked creatively. Always seasonal with good options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Yummy yummy risotto, I last had an amazing porkchop served over saffron mashed potatoes surrounded by trumpet mushrooms and the glazed onions done in a red wine reduction atop the chop with plenty of the reduction sauce for every bite. A sweet and sour porkcop taken to great and elegant heights. We had no time for dessert because we had theater tix but the desserts here are extraordinary. I almost never order dessert but the offerings here are transporting. You will not regret eating here.
Creative Food But Inconsistent. Garlic bread way too dry and not garlicky--not enough olive oil.
Risotto was filled with fresh, tasty veggies--scrumptious.
No fresh fish available the day I visited and other main-dish selections limited.
Wine list fairly priced knowledgeable but limited,
Loved the food: kale caesar, vegetable saute, and the burger packed with more flavors than Baskin Robbins! Fries and tomato jam were also delicious. And the affogato for dessert completed a perfect meal. The down-side, we left feeling that perhaps we had eaten too much!
Can't wait for the next visit.
We have been a few times now, my husband had the burger this time and he wasn't over whelmed, the bun was a bit soggy. But last time he had the risotto and loved it, I had the kale salad with chicken added and our friends had the chicken and the meat balls. I think it is a great neighborhood restaurant. We will continue to go back and try other things on the menue.
