Unusual beer selection; good choices for fruity beers. Restaurant was not crowded, but service was very slow. One round of drinks, one appetizer and one entree each for 4 people took over 90 minutes. Entrees took exceedingly long to arrive. Bison burger ordered medium rare came medium well. Appeared that the staff was new, and procedures for waiting tables either were not established or not understood. Staff was friendly and atmosphere was good. Might be a better place for an after-work drink at the bar.
The only issue was that they were out of tater tots on the day we went - but no fault of the staff. Good food. Huge beer list. Server was excellent. I'd go back.
Arrived at 6:30. Was seated and abandoned. No silverware. No water at the table. Over twenty minutes later a waiter finally arrive. Indicated that tickets were taking over an hour. Lots of attitude from waiter. The resturant was not full. The menu is hamburgers and sandwiches. Other tables were going to the bar to order drinks and returning to their table to wait for their meals.
I recommend that everyone avoid Villains.
I don't often write reviews, but our experience was SO BAD that it warrants taking the time to help others avoid it. They were dreadfully understaffed, the hardwood floor was a mess in the main dining area, and they were out of a huge portion of the items on the menu. Despite the restaurant only being about 30% full, the hostess told us there would be an hour wait for food orders so we just got appetizers but it still took FOREVER. We were told they were out of cheese plates, but then suddenly they had them - we suspected they were actually getting the food from somewhere. It was a surreal-ly bad experience.
We received incredibly poor service during our visit. It took about 20 minutes for them to get our food order, even though we tried to get their attention multiple times and when we tried to tell them at the table, they left before we could get out our order. The cheese platter we ordered took 45 minutes to get to us and the toast was burnt. We were very hungry and didn't want to send it back. It took another 30 minutes to get the one burger we ordered, which was almost an hour after we first sat down. We had asked for guac on the side, which, of course, came on the burger. Again, we didn't send it back since we were then in a rush to leave in order to get somewhere on time. The only thing they did quickly was get us a check and charge our cards.
We left an 18% tip because even though I believe the staff could have been much friendlier overall, especially when running so slowly, it was obvious that the restaurant was entirely under staffed as it appeared that there were only 3 people running the front and only 1 chef in the back. I liked my beer recommendation (I would have liked to order a second, but the waitress never came back to the table). The burger was fine, the cheese plate was fine, the cheese fries were by far the highlight of the meal - I wish we had gone to a fast food place for the amount we spent and the quality of food and service we got. Will never recommend and will never go back.
Service was very slow and food for our party came at different times. I also got sick from the turkey burger. Would not recommend and will not be back.
I booked a 2:00 p.m. reservation on OpenTable and showed up at 2:00 on the dot only to find out that Villains was not open and was not scheduled to open until 5:00 p.m. I am not sure whose fault this was, but I was really hoping to try this place.
Loved the beer and the service
Great beer list, a lot of options and most beers are great. They also rotate their beer options once a while.
We made a reservation through Opentable, walked the almost mile, and it was closed. Bad form.
The only villain was the bad service
We were greeted warmly, and the host even checked on us partway through the meal to see if all was ok (it was!). Food was delish, and our server was very knowledgeable about a rather complex beer list. Welcome to the neighborhood, Villains!
Best staff ever!!
My experience was great. My only surprise was how empty the place was for a Saturday evening. I highly recommend Villains for a date night.
Food was okay but the beer selection was great. Pricey.
Great food and drinks. Will go back for sure.
Food was great. Spicy wings, risotto was awesome and the steak and frites were tasty. Server was not as knowledgeable about a few things we asked about but maybe they were new. Forgot name, so no biggie. Would come back.
We went in at 7:30pm on a Saturday night...definitely didn't need a reservation that early, as there were maybe two or three other tables taken at that time. The menu was short but good. Food was fantastic. Service was OK - not great - a bit slow at times. But overall a good experience. So many places in town to choose from...not sure we'd go back.
This was a great find just a few blocks away from our hotel. Beer lovers heaven with so many choices to try out - both local, national and international options! Food was great too! Surprised more people were not in there but it was a Wednesday night after all and most were probably watching the baseball somewhere else!
Amazing place. I had a great time with friends and family. Wonderful atmosphere, great service, food is astonishing and beer selection is something special and unique. I have to come back again.
I wasn't impressed with Villains. It seemed they were short staffed so service was slow. Cocktails were alright. We started with the cheese plate, two hard cheeses with toast - there are better cheese plates out there. My food was bland. A friend had the mushroom risotto and loved it.
Cute, spacious bar with great beer selection. Absolutely terrible food
Warm and inviting, from the moment of entry to the first course. We really loved being at this signature restaurant.
Gorgeous space! Loved the ambience- need to amp up the food for the costs. Great burger, apps are overpriced. Would love to put a bunch of money into the service and food side of everything because it's a great building!
Villains is the kind of neighborhood place that I wish I had in my neighborhood. I'd be there every night. The vibe is relaxed and cool and the food is just delicious. Come for the beer. Stay for the mussels!
We had a great dinner before a concert at Soldier Field. Nope trouble getting a reservation and the restaurant quickly filled around us. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The food was fantastic. We had the charcuterie and cheese boards, tacos al pastor and the smoked whitefish. We needed a few extra toast points and they were easy to get. Nice selection of beer and wine with some nice craft options.
Really great selection of beers from around the world. I like that they offer beer flights so you can sample a few before sticking with one or two.
Food and service was great. Julia (our server) was fantastic - friendly, knowledgeable and a good sense of humor.
Worst service I've ever had. I asked if we could place our order and although I was dining with 5 other people, the server took my order only, then disappeared. Apparently she thought I was the only one eating tonight. I had to track down a different server to track down our server so that the rest of my party could give their order. As a table of 6, a 20% tip was included in our bill. But the tip wasn't warranted. We told the manager that we were paying in cash and not leaving a tip for the waitress and slipped the busboy $20. The manager threatened to call the police for not leaving the tip designated on the receipt, followed me to my car, and photographed my license plate as an intimidation tactic.
With all the fantastic establishments in Chicago, there's no reason to ever dine here.
I love Villains. Their food is always excellent. Their beer list top notch.
Very underrated restaurant in the South loop. Easily one of the 5 best burgers I've had in Chicago and the best imported drought list I've seen here as well. Great service and plan to recommend to others.
Awesome Cheeseburger, and maybe the best fries in town! If you like crispy fries, you have to give them a try!
We shared the Cuban Black Bean Soup and it was awesome. Lots of interesting beer choices. Great value and a really memorable atmosphere
Awesome chicken wings!!!
This is a great and unique establishment. This was my first time dining there and will come back again. My girlfriend and I had a great time. The food and drinks were outstanding. Great and friendly service.
The wait staff was awful... basically u need to serve yourself because u might get 1 beer all night, no water bc there are not enough glasses and food comes 2 hrs after u order.. there were only 7 tables and they said they were busy. This place is sad... don't go here!!! Overpriced and crappy service
We had a large group, on a Saturday night. The place was not super busy. The level of service and organization was abysmal, however. Our waitperson consistently ignored us, and when (after 90 minutes) we had a chance to order, our food dribbled out over a span of 45 minutes from first entree delivered to last one (which actually never showed up!). When this was pointed out to the waitress, she verbally attacked the person who asked her about it. The manager hid in the back, unwilling to address the problems with his waitstaff and kitchen.
Would not recommend
This was a super busy weekend in Chicago with Cubs resellers and rugby spectators in town for an international match-up. Even so, service was inexcusably slow and inattentive. I had to send my meal back to the kitchen as it arrived cold at the table, and my companions barely touched theirs either. Drinks took so long to arrive we were well into our mains before we got anything to whet the whistle. Won't be returning.
Food is great, we will be going back! I had the short rib curry, definitely recommend it!
Beer list was impressive. Good menu choices.
