Friends birthday
I eat at this restaurant -- go to in Santana Row - always good food and service! Appreciate the selection but wish they carried Lloyd's Chardonnay.
We had the best server ever!!!
We made reservations here for Easter brunch and were not disappointed. The ambience was nice and the food was very good.
Celebrating Easter Sunday
We went for breakfast, food was average, service was good
Limited kids menu. Disappointed that when we walked in they asked us to sit outside because they had reservations through 2pm. We were one of those reservations, and the inside NEVER filled up while we were there. Just was odd since it was chilly in the AM and we didn't request to sit outside on the reservation. They figured it out and we were able to sit inside.
Food was great, but they put us an outside table and seemed to forget about us. We had to flag down the waiter several times, and ask busboys to call our waiter over.
It delayed the meal.
Our hotel recommended we meet our friend for wine and tasty eats...highlight was the mushroom flat bread with Point Reyes bleu cheese! Wonderful customer service and a great scene for al fresco dining!!!
Always great food & great service
Center of Santana Row with outdoor seating including a heated patio. The food has ranged from mediocre to great in my experiences. The service is friendly, but not over the top. I prefer this place for brunch or lunch on a sunny day.
The service was awful. Sat for 15 mins after getting table, without any water or anyone checking on us. Server got 1 order wrong, then correct order took 20 minutes for a salad. The salad was missing items. I have been here many times before and will not return.
No celery for bloody mary's on a Sunday?
Other items where bland. Reuben was awful, burnt meat and flavorless.
We had to ask who our server was and if we could be helped. Had to ask for bill. Waitress would disappear and we did not see her with any other tables except the one next to us (there service was awful also, but at the get the orders correct.).
Have been on two occasions - weekend brunch and sat evening dinner with friends. Brunch I ordered poached eggs over hard and it took til the third try to get it right (one of the orders came back with a fried egg) and got my food almost 45 minutes after my partner finished his meal. The manager was gracious though and apologized and comped the food. Saturday we were there with friends - soup was good but risotto came plain without the parsley rosemary so waiter said it looked different but still served it to us. After our questioning, he went and got a side of the sauce so we mixed it in ourselves. Very weird that it could leave the kitchen without QA. Wait staff is trying but kitchen seems subpar.
We've eaten at the Village many tines, and always enjoy it. This particular night the sole, filet mignon and duck dishes were very good, but the seafood linguine was a miss. Our server seemed a bit overwhelmed, so service was ok, but not great.
Nice dinner, great food and service. We were a party of 7
The fish in the fish and chips order was a very small portion for the price.
Wonderful!
Both food and service have gotten worse in the past 2 years. The calamari was not fresh and tasted like it was refried. The fish was too salty and the beef bun too sweet.
The waitress, Melissa, did not provide adequate service considering the restaurant was less than half full. It is unfortunate since this restaurant used to be the only decent place to eat in Santana Row 5 years ago.
Service was fabulous, we weren't rushed, and the food was delicious. Always consistent!
The grilled cheese from the children's menu is made of way too thick of a bread slice and the cheese was not melted at all. The soup was great. The cobb salad was also wonderful. The calamari was a bit disappointing since they seem to fluff it with fried artichokes so it was a lot less calamari. It also tasted very floury. The fish and chips is tasty but beware the chips are actual chips not fries. The coleslaw was very vinegary and inedible. The burger was great and so was the wine.
The server Kayla was awesome! Such a friendly person. She really made our day. Thanks!
Extremely disappointed. Ordered crab cakes Benedict and the cakes were cold! Hollandaise sauce was awful. Service was inattentive and the bar tending either understaffed or inexperienced. It took forever for my drink to arrive Management needs to review their staffing and customer service in addition to what is happening in the kitchen
Loved the brunch and the customizable bloody mary option. Food was excellent. Service...meh. A little slow....I think they may not properly staff for Sunday brunch. We had to ask twice for my husband's beer; one item we ordered never made it to the table, but did make it onto the bill. They took it off, but still....
Anyway, it's a place I've been many times and will go back many more.
It was great, we had the table right by the front and since it was too cold outside it was perfect. There was plenty of natural lighting and the table fit six people. Food was great and drinks were great! A good Sunday for us girls to catch up. We got seated pretty quickly and everyone was so patient.
Sat us immediately, very prompt service. Food was excellent, wine selection was top notch.
Such potential, so many disappointments! Server quite friendly, but rarely seen. Coffee long past its prime, food delivered almost cold-but hard to rectify as server didn't come back for 15 minutes. Had it been hot it would have been very good.
Valentines
We were there for late dinner on February 14 - so appreciated the heavy drapes and outdoor heaters. It was very comfortable - and quieter than the inside! The food was excellent and service very good.
Greeted and quickly seated. Nice wine selection and food choices looked great. Our selections were delicious.
Highly recommended especially for a special dinner occasion.
This was our first visit to the restaurant. The food was fine — nothing stellar, but tasty and what I expected. The issue was with the service. We were enjoying a cocktail and appetizer when our wine came out and, quickly after, our dinner. Surely they know to wait until we have finished with the drink and appetizer first? I felt rushed throughout because of that. I'm not sure if we'll return. I might be willing to give them a second chance, but I really think the service should be better.
It was hard to qualify this rating with stars. The food was good and the prices were very good for the quality of food. Our server was pleasant and attentive but not intrusive. In general, a nice place to have lunch with a friend.
But my whole experience was colored by the host who was not at all welcoming. When I reserved, I requested an outside table. Friday was sunny and hot in the Bay Area. So when we arrived I asked for a table in the shade, preferably along the side of the restaurant which is in a covered passageway. It appeared there were tables available there and also four-tops in the front that had sun umbrellas.
The host was quite insistent that the only available table was a small cafe table with a metal mesh top tucked into a corner in front of the restaurant. I pointed out that the small amount of shade for that table would probably disappear as the sun moved but he said he would bring the awning down if it got sunny. Which it did, and he did. But in a very short time the sun moved so that the awning was insufficient and as a result we spent our lunch mostly in the warm sun. Surely the host knew that would be the case.
I have no idea why the host was so resistant to giving us a table in the shady area, or a four-top in the front. If he had taken the time to explain (a large party coming in, an unexpected volume of reservations) I might have been less annoyed. But he was adamant to the point of rudeness. Maybe I should have worn fancier shoes. Maybe it's the way he treats a pair of women. Who knows.
Anyway if it had not been lunch hour in Santana Row and if I hadn't already dragged an old friend out of her way to meet me at my convenience I would have gone somewhere else. But I was in a social bind, it was lunchtime in the Row and my friend had been generous with her time. So we had lunch at the Village California Bistro. And like I said the food was good and the server was competent. But I don't think I'm planning to return.
I actually really like this place. Food is great and service is pretty good. We had to ask a few times for things we ordered that were forgotten, but that’s alright.
What I don’t like is that the employer is too cheap to pay for their employees benefits so they tack on a minimum wage tax to your check. This place is located in Santana Row, they have to be making pretty decent money. Honestly if I would have known I probably would have gone elsewhere. Take care of your employees!
Service was very slow
At time of booking via open table, allergies were listed as well as notification that dinner was for a birthday even. Restaurant failed to show knowledge of allergies or birthday.
Food is reasonable, far from great. Service is well below average and this has a feeling of “a chain restaurant”. I would not recommend.
Restaurant showed great unwillingness to “adjust” food recipes to accommodate any food allergies. Waiter was initially even unwilling to indicate which foods would be ok (he pointed to one single option: sole, stated that was the only option). We then had to ask for a candle for the birthday, again the waiter obliged but not without a “disapproving” look.
The only hit that kept this from being an outstanding experience was the expectation that the oysters were supposed to come out before our entrees AND that we had to ask for the status of that order
Poor service, had to ask for water several times, one brunch item was barely warm - asked for a condiment a couple times and it never came. Our waitress went in break and didn’t tell us or transition the New waiter. Manager Courtney apologized, took off the one meal and a little discount, that was nice but I told her, we have been there several times because we like the food and cocktails but always, service there is subpar. We keep thinking it will get better. Not sure we’ll visit again as there is a lot of competition and newer places to go to. Thank you for the opportunity and I really hope they can provide better service.
Becky was very helpful for making suggestions to help we vegetarians for the menu as the menus needs more options. She was great!
We have been going here frequently, but the last 3 times our experience was really bad. The waiter seems new and untrained. She was feeling overwhelmed with pretty much anything we asked. Such as a coffee refill, butter for the bread. The quality of food is also going down. I am personally disappointed because I used to love this place. After 3 consecutive bad experiences, I don’t think we will be going back too soon.
Excellent guest services!!! The chef shut down the kitchen to triple wash the grill to assure that my gluten free meal had absolutely no cross contamination!!! And the food was fantastic!!! Gluten free pancakes we're heaven! I will visit again and again!
The best thing about this place is that was the only one on Santana row without a long wait. The hostess was very welcoming and pleasant. The waitstaff was rushed and not attentive. The food was mediocre not served as ordered & A bit overpriced for what it was. I ordered flatbread and added chicken for $11 (total $27) and it was about four pieces of over cooked chicken. If you’re looking for a quick easy place to get in and out of I would recommend it but overall it was just mediocre at best
