VILLAGE California Bistro & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
This was our first visit to the restaurant. The food was fine — nothing stellar, but tasty and what I expected. The issue was with the service. We were enjoying a cocktail and appetizer when our wine came out and, quickly after, our dinner. Surely they know to wait until we have finished with the drink and appetizer first? I felt rushed throughout because of that. I'm not sure if we'll return. I might be willing to give them a second chance, but I really think the service should be better.
It was hard to qualify this rating with stars. The food was good and the prices were very good for the quality of food. Our server was pleasant and attentive but not intrusive. In general, a nice place to have lunch with a friend.
But my whole experience was colored by the host who was not at all welcoming. When I reserved, I requested an outside table. Friday was sunny and hot in the Bay Area. So when we arrived I asked for a table in the shade, preferably along the side of the restaurant which is in a covered passageway. It appeared there were tables available there and also four-tops in the front that had sun umbrellas.
The host was quite insistent that the only available table was a small cafe table with a metal mesh top tucked into a corner in front of the restaurant. I pointed out that the small amount of shade for that table would probably disappear as the sun moved but he said he would bring the awning down if it got sunny. Which it did, and he did. But in a very short time the sun moved so that the awning was insufficient and as a result we spent our lunch mostly in the warm sun. Surely the host knew that would be the case.
I have no idea why the host was so resistant to giving us a table in the shady area, or a four-top in the front. If he had taken the time to explain (a large party coming in, an unexpected volume of reservations) I might have been less annoyed. But he was adamant to the point of rudeness. Maybe I should have worn fancier shoes. Maybe it's the way he treats a pair of women. Who knows.
Anyway if it had not been lunch hour in Santana Row and if I hadn't already dragged an old friend out of her way to meet me at my convenience I would have gone somewhere else. But I was in a social bind, it was lunchtime in the Row and my friend had been generous with her time. So we had lunch at the Village California Bistro. And like I said the food was good and the server was competent. But I don't think I'm planning to return.
I actually really like this place. Food is great and service is pretty good. We had to ask a few times for things we ordered that were forgotten, but that’s alright.
What I don’t like is that the employer is too cheap to pay for their employees benefits so they tack on a minimum wage tax to your check. This place is located in Santana Row, they have to be making pretty decent money. Honestly if I would have known I probably would have gone elsewhere. Take care of your employees!
At time of booking via open table, allergies were listed as well as notification that dinner was for a birthday even. Restaurant failed to show knowledge of allergies or birthday.
Food is reasonable, far from great. Service is well below average and this has a feeling of “a chain restaurant”. I would not recommend.
Restaurant showed great unwillingness to “adjust” food recipes to accommodate any food allergies. Waiter was initially even unwilling to indicate which foods would be ok (he pointed to one single option: sole, stated that was the only option). We then had to ask for a candle for the birthday, again the waiter obliged but not without a “disapproving” look.
Poor service, had to ask for water several times, one brunch item was barely warm - asked for a condiment a couple times and it never came. Our waitress went in break and didn’t tell us or transition the New waiter. Manager Courtney apologized, took off the one meal and a little discount, that was nice but I told her, we have been there several times because we like the food and cocktails but always, service there is subpar. We keep thinking it will get better. Not sure we’ll visit again as there is a lot of competition and newer places to go to. Thank you for the opportunity and I really hope they can provide better service.
We have been going here frequently, but the last 3 times our experience was really bad. The waiter seems new and untrained. She was feeling overwhelmed with pretty much anything we asked. Such as a coffee refill, butter for the bread. The quality of food is also going down. I am personally disappointed because I used to love this place. After 3 consecutive bad experiences, I don’t think we will be going back too soon.
The best thing about this place is that was the only one on Santana row without a long wait. The hostess was very welcoming and pleasant. The waitstaff was rushed and not attentive. The food was mediocre not served as ordered & A bit overpriced for what it was. I ordered flatbread and added chicken for $11 (total $27) and it was about four pieces of over cooked chicken. If you’re looking for a quick easy place to get in and out of I would recommend it but overall it was just mediocre at best
We went for NYE dinner. We’ve celebrated the new year there before. The place was not very busy as in past years. My husband had lamb and it was not very good. Our first course was not up to their standard meal. I had the filet, mashed potatoe and broccoli rab was great ! The desserts were excellent!
Great appetizers and good place to sit outside and people watch. Enjoyed Kayla our server who was attentive and ensured we were taken care of with all of our questions and requests. I also appreciated Kayla attention to our teenage sons requests and questions.
The food was a hit and miss w/our party of 5. The bacon omelette was nicely done w/decent size pieces of bacon despite the waiter explained it poorly. Eggs Benedict was good as well but could've used more hollandaise sauce. The spuds that came with it needed to be crisped up and leave out the filler of green bell peppers (way too much!). The fish used for the fish and chips was very poor quality fish and the batter was way too heavy. Very poorly done! Would never order that dish again according to two at the table that ordered it. The burger was very good second time around as first time it was well done despite request was for medium rare! Three of five said they would not go back.
This was my third time here. My first time was a great experience from start to finish. The second time, the service was sorely lacking -- had to ask to order drinks after being seated for more than 20 minutes and then asked for the drinks to be served another 15 minutes later. That was a bummer because I was treating a friend from out of state for her birthday. I went back this time for a holiday brunch with friends, hoping for the best. The food and Bloody Mary's were excellent. Service was not awesome, but it was not horrible either. I will go back another time.
By the way, the Build Your Own Bloody Mary menu (available weekends only) is phenomenal.
Have been here multiple times & had excellent service. Came 2 hrs before catching a movie. Restaurant wasn't busy; however, our waitress, was SLOW. Our food finally came 1/2 hr before we had to leave!! Found out they were short-staffed; however, waitress should have communicated that to us. We told her of our movie plans. Will come again but hopefully, not the same waitress!!
The restaurant comped our dessert. They apologized for the slow service. We hadn't really noticed, but they apologized without us having commented at all. We were very surprised and very appreciative of their acknowledgement that their service was not up to their own standards.
So disappointed with our latest visit here... this was one of my favorite restaurants in Santana Row because they are dog friendly, the menu was great and the service has always been outstanding (until this past visit).
The menu changed for the Fall Season which is fine, but, the choices were frankly uninspiring. We used to love the mini-wellingtons appetizer, but that's gone. We had to go with deep fried duck rolls as an appetizer, and they weren't very tasty. The main course selection was equally bland... we had Duck and Filet Mignon in the absence of anything interesting.
But, that wasn't the worst part of the evening. The service was terrible! We usually get great service here even when they are busy, but our server was super slow and almost non-existent on Saturday night! When she did stop by (in all of 3 visits throughout the entire evening) she could barely smile. Oh, until she brought the bill over... then she smiled WIDE so we knew she had it in her.
Even the guys who clear the tables and fill water had an attitude. I asked one of them if we could have water, he looked right at me, and then walked away.... I was pretty astounded because I said "please could we get some water?" in a non-demanding way... he was super rude.
Anyway, we're taking this off the restaurant rotation for now. There are too many good restaurants in Santana Row, we're not going to waste our time until they up-level the service and we'll check the menu before we go if we ever go back.
We had a very nice dinner here. My wife's filet was cooked perfectly and my duck with mole sauce was very tasty and perfect amount of sauce - not overwhelming. Our server was outstanding and we also had a cocktail at the bar and our bartender was a great guy and excellent conversation!
my friend ordered the beet salad with chicken, It cam with no chicken. Sent it back and the waiter brought her coleslaw while they redid the salad.
Waiter was very nice but not very attentive. The salad finally came and she was charged $8.00 for the chicken, a little pricey.
Wow. I ordered the Eggs Benedict Florentine and found they used a puff pastry instead of an English muffin and it was outstanding. Very light. The hollandaise was just the right amount of butter and lemon - divine. Also, our waiter was particularly engaging and genuinely friendly.
We came here for my birthday and sat outside. The ambiance was perfect with the trees lit up with twinkle lights. I was excited that they had wine flights and I had the most delicious roasted beet salad! The rest of the food was good too and we had a great experience.
They are not introducing the oyster to us when they deliver the dish to us. Just put it down and leave. Also, we have 3 people but only 2 forks for oyster. To be fair, the server did come back awhile later and check if everything is ok, but we already finished the oyster (one of my friends decided not to wait and used a regular fork) so we did not tell him.
