VILLAGE California Bistro & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
I never sat inside before and realized the outdoors is what makes this restaurant worth going to. The service was ok and I say that because I do not like getting my food before my drinks, we ordered wine and it did not arrive until several minutes after our food with both our dinner and our dessert.
I keep giving this place a try because it’s a good location and has an early brunch start time. It’s never memorable. We asked what kind of pancakes and the waitperson said they were just regular pancakes. The arrived and they were pumpkin. And not good pumpkin. Biscuits are blobs of dough. Eggs scrambles were dry.
Wine list is fine. Bloody Mary’s are good.
But it’s def not worth the money.
I will go back for a glass of wine but won’t ever eat here again.
Things started out nice with a table on the side patio facing the walkway at Santana Row. The waiter was very kind and was amenable to our requests due to dietary constraints when taking our orders. He listened and seemed attentive and there was a lot of "absolutely" and "no problems"! Drinks came promptly. When the food came out my salad had cheese all over it which I had told him to please hold (no dairy). The young man delivering the salad had no clue but our waiter was standing nearby and said "oh, that was my fault I'm sorry, we will take care of that" and grabbed it to take it back to the kitchen. I was fine with that and shortly thereafter it came back with the other young man. When he set it down he said "Your waiter will be out with the dressing". The salad had clearly been shaken off to remove the cheese because there were remnants on some of the leaves and a few pieces on the sides of the plate. I removed them and decided to just eat it at that point. I waited and waited and saw my waiter go by a few times and saw him chatting with other staff. I finally put my hand up and called to him and asked him to bring the dressing. He apologized and went off to get it. He came back a few minutes later with the dressing. All was fine besides that. Food was ok, not great, not bad. Had to ask for our check as we sat there for a LONG time after we were done to get it. It was a nice casual lunch and company was good we had a lot to talk about it so it was fine but service less than stellar and food just ok. Atmosphere beautiful and that was the best part. Not sure I would return.
This place was one of the originals on Santana Row, I believe, and back in it's day was a pretty good place for a quality dining experience. However, the last two times I've been there, once each in 2016/17, the overall experience at Village Bistro has been dismal.
Service is fairly quick, but not nearly as professional a staff as in past years. The food is simply bad for the prices they charge. Most recently, they substituted a side without mentioning it when the plate was ordered. Last, the restroom was a mess. As has much of Santana Row, Village Bistro has gone stale. It's not just that this restaurant is no longer good; it's now bad.
These notes are in the hope of being of service. The three of us dined at the Village Bistro. The food concepts are good, but the execution was flawed. I stress this is not to call anyone out, it's just to give you some pointers to improve things.
-- our waiter asserted there was no sweet vermouth ... even though a bar such as yours would obviously have this
-- the first drinks (manhattans, up) were terribly watery ... and then, the waiter had a bit of trouble when I didn't immediately say they were great. Further the waiter didn't really know what I meant, and when I explained didn't exhibit any regret, ask to fix them, etc.
-- two tables near us, seated after us, received their appetizers (though we'd ordered early, and one had ordered the appetizer we ordered!). finally ours came, and then about 1 minute later, our entrees. The server who brought the meals (not our waiter) was surprised, and apologized
-- we heard the specials, then ordered. one of us ordered the squash ravioli; only then did we learn it was not available ... the waiter claimed to have just learned that (but didn't mention it before we ordered)
-- two of us got the rosemary chicken. overall, great flavors and cooked well, but the cherries were pure vinegar (impossible to eat)
-- one of us got a truffle -- and couldn't eat it because she hates mint (mint flavor not listed on the menu).
-- one of us got the blood orange creme brûlée -- it was entirely runny, not custard-like in any way ... like orange-flavored runny egg yolk -- really really bad.
Again, the food ideas were good. But there is lots to do to deliver on a dining experience, and some work to do in the kitchen.
I had breakfast here on Saturday morning and there was a yoga class going on outside which prompted me to get a table inside because of how loud the class was. The atmosphere is very nice inside and the service is pretty good. The prices are a little high for breakfast and the food was so-so. I probably wouldn't come back here for breakfast and I'm not sure if I would return for any other meal as well.
We went for brunch. It was just okay. The food was okay. Virtually every meal came out wrong in some way. One person ordered "very well done scrambled eggs" and they came out runny. Most sides were wrong. The server was certainly not very friendly (generally professional, but nothing more). There are lots of other good restaurants there that we will be choosing instead next time!
This place has gone downhill. Took forever to get a waiter, but the waiter himself was very good. We asked for the soup to be extra hot, it was luke warm. We asked for the prawns to be cooked well, both meals were over cooked. Great shame, this place used to be very reliable. Is the lease up?
The staff were very accommodating and professional. The brunch menu and food were good. The indoor seating was very noisy, but the outdoor seating was quiet, calm, and delightful. I had made our reservation for an indoor table, but when I realized how noisy it was, they were very kind to accommodate us for outdoor seating.
A great destination for lunch during the work week when Santana Row is not busy and crowded. A relaxed, upscale California feel. Fair market prices with competent quality food execution and service. Po'boy blackened salmon sandwich was freshly prepared and delicious and wine selections were good and competitively priced (by the glass, half, and full bottle). Great to have a half bottle option, especially for lunch
Seemed short staffed. Our server was good but just had too many other tables. There was a manager looking guy watching over but he did not assist any of the servers and did not give us any contact (nor did anyone other staff members) so we could ask for missing things on our table. It is always fun to sit outside and people watch and I would go back again hoping they step up the service.
It just gets worse every time I come here. Service is very spotty, food is bland, menu is lacking creativity, and portion to price is very skewed. This place was great many years back, but after my last 3 dining experiences here, I’m going to write it off for good.
Ate here on a recent "for pleasure" trip to San Jose. Our service was friendly and attentive. The outdoor seating was shaded and pretty and great for people watching. Our meal was really fresh (salmon and summer vegetables)--good portion size and a nice wine list! Would go back in a heart beat and would highly recommend!!
