Villa Maria - Calgary Ratings and Reviews
We made a last minute reservation for Mothers Day. Upon arrival they seated us in the quaint room, very cozy that looks out over 17th Avenue. We loved it. The food was great and the service even better. We didn't feel rushed, enjoyed our meals and our evening was capped off with complementary Lemoncello. A great reminder of our trip to Italy last year and all the wonderful comp lemoncello there. We will be back and highly recommend it to all!
It's an ok place. They were out of any of the beer I wanted but the wine prices were generally ok. The appetizers were just ok and nothing special, especially the quality of the ingredients. The mains were also just ok. Most at our table ordered veal and it was tough so I assume a red veal vs white. Again lower quality. The sauces on the veal were good but they were skimpy on the accompanying veg and sides. For the price there are better places for Italian food.
This was my first time back to Villa since they moved to 5th street. And wow! They really changed it up. Not the food because it was already amazing but the overall feel! It now has this contemporary aura and look that can top most Calgary restaurants. Wonderful place!
Have lots of memories of Danny and crew at the previous location but I know this one will make even more!
We ordered the Bruschetta Trio, Meatballs, Risotto AI Funghi and Gemelli Alfredo with Chicken (if available). Delicious food!
Villa Maria is a great place for dinner. There is a nice selection of pastas as well as chicken and veal dishes. We started with mussels and caesars salads, which were great. For mains we had the sole special, veal piccata, veal parmesan and a pasta bolognese. All were excellent. We saved some room to share a dessert to cap off the evening. All in all, a nice evening and we will return.
We recently dropped in to Villa Maria with a group of six to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was our first time here and we were very pleasantly surprised. Danny, the owner, greeted us warmly at the door and was attentive and entertaining throughout the night. The ambiance is warm and friendly. Maria, Danny's wife and also the chef, prepared a great authentic Italian dinner. Although the wine list is not extensive, you can find a reasonably priced Italian wine that will compliment you meal. Definitely a place that we will visit again!
Brought my in-laws for a nice dinner and Villa Maria did not disappoint. Had dinner from 7:30-9:30 and we were treated so well. We basically had the restaurant to ourselves which was actually really nice. Food was excellent, prices are good and the service was awesome. We will come back of course.
I'm only writing this review because I really wanted to. Danny is one of the friendliest restaurant owner/server I have ever met. He even let us park in his lot after dinner to go to a show at the Dome.
The food was fantastic. My wife and I frequent Italian restaurants around town quite often so we had expectations based on the price of the items. We found a lot of restaurants do not justify the price but Villa Maria exceeded all expectations and the value was definitely there.
This restaurant is really a hidden jem. It is extremely close to where we live near stampede park. We went during a Flames game and they did everything to ensure those who were going to the game got there with time to spare. The staff were funny and nice. We will return.
I was nervous since this restaurant has changed names a few times over the years. I booked it based on the ratings and just as important the location to the Saddledome for the Flames game. I was expexting good found it to be great food and the service was exceptional. If you do go make sure to ask for Steve, probably one of the best waiters in Calgary. Highly Recommend.
I was in the area on a Thursday night and I had wanted to try this place for a while. I arrived at 6:30 on a Thursday night and I was the 2nd table (a few more tables arrived as I dined). The waiter did a good job of being attentive, but not smothering which is very easy to do when it's not busy. The veal parm was lightly breaded, juicy, and tender but overpriced. I was in Italy 3 weeks earlier and Villa Maria's food and prices pale in comparison. Thankfully, Villa Maria's service is an order of magnitude better than I experienced in Italy.
The place looked nice enough, the service was good. It was on the in-between quiet time when I had dinner. The food was ok. I had the Lobster Ravioli. The stuffing was good but the pasta was a bit on the hard side instead of soft side. I had the creme caramel for dessert, there was some kind of skin on the bottom that ruined the taste of an otherwise good dessert. Will most likely pass to try some other restaurant but will give it another try again if I get a few recommendations for the restaurant.
Villa Maria offers a delicious and delightful dining experience! Danny had to basically start from scratch again after the floods and dining room is warm & inviting. From the hostess greeting and Danny himself welcoming us to our excellent server, our evening was perfect. The special of the evening was Maria's (chef and namesake) LAMB SHANK. My husband is a lamb expert and he claimed it was the BEST HE'S EVER HAD, ANYWHERE! My scampi was garlicky goodness! Their focacia bruschetta is delicious. Great wine list to boot.
Side info - you can park in the lot before an event at the Saddle Dome and come back for your car after the show! Dinner & a Show, free parking!
Definitely check it out!
Was looking for a great pre Flames game spot. This place missed the mark. The menu was pre set so there were limited options to select from and everything was pre made in advance. The food was either cold or tasted like it was microwaved. Supremely disappointing. I'm unsure if it would be a better experience if it was a normal weekday or weekend evening. Cute little environment but sadly the food fell extremely below expectation.
