Villa Francesca Ratings and Reviews
Great spot in the north end! The food was fantastic, however the staff did not seem overly eager to please. Not sure if it was because we came in near the end of the dinner rush, but they seemed indifferent. I'm not saying they were rude or unfriendly, but we were in from out of town, it was our kids' first time in Boston, and a smile or added bonus to the night would have been great!
Also, while the kids enjoyed the chicken parm, which was outstanding, there is no kids' menu if yours are small. If they don't mind the adult fare, they will be plenty pleased!
Again, tremendous dinner, ambiance was just ok. We will go back for sure to see if maybe it was just us who had the problem.
VIlla Francesca was fantastic! We had friends in town from Canada and wanted to show them the best Boston had to offer. We had eaten here before and knew it was the best. We were seated at a table next to the windows that were open to the street which was the table I had been eyeing while we had a glass of wine at the bar. Once we were seated our waiter introduced himself as Thomas. He later told us that he was the owner! What an extraodinary treat! We had fabulous service, food and the ambiance couldn't be beat! Thank you Thomas!

Most of the tables are in the basement level, which is dark and uninviting. The food was okay, but everything seemed to be covered heavily with the same white wine sauce. The service was very poor. The server never checked how our meal was, did not tell us about items not available until we tried to order the item, did not tell us about a dessert that needed to be ordered 20 minutes in advance.
Noise: Our table was at the front of the restaurant, which is wide open to Richmond street. It's great for people watching, but if an ambulance comes by you better block your ears. It was a VERY warm night, but they manage to keep it cool in spite of the open front. The food, as always, was superb !
This restaurant is expensive, even for the North End, so I was expecting better. The food was just ok. I have been here over the years, and the food is not what it once was. The pasta, for example, used to be delicious and homemade and now tastes like your average restaurant pasta. The service was also just ok. The waiter was not friendly and seemed generally annoyed. We walked by 3-4 staff on our way out who did not even acknowledge us with a "thank you" or "have a nice night." The positives were that the ambiance is nice, especially when they open up the large front windows in the summer. Next time I will either try elsewhere or go back to "Fiore" which is across the street and has better food, homemade pasta, and impeccable service.
My food was excellent I had chicken with cherry pepper and hot pepper, my husband had oysters which were excellent but his main entree was ok per him had seafood with rice. We had trouble getting waiter attention he was distracted by a large noisey party. But would def give second chance and go again.
This was the second time to Francesca, but we will probably pick another place in the future. The food was just OK, nothing special and after you have eaten you will say you've had better elsewhere. Our waiter seemed like he had better places to be, and it almost felt like he was being inconvenienced. The bus people were attentive, which was good.
We went for a birthday and made a note on the reservation. We also told the waiter, who replied "Oh".
We left feeling we were served low quality overpriced food, and they would have preferred us to get it from the kitchen ourselves (but still leave 20%).
For years we loved Villa Francesca, however, my husband and I were terribly disappointed this past weekend. I started to order 3 appetizers (Cost of $35+), but the waitress said "You have to order an entree if you want to sit here." Shocked, I said, "I was planning on ordering three appetizers which equals the same price as an entree." She said she'd check with her manager and upon her return said that the policy stood. My husband told her we would be leaving. I could see she felt bad, and so I told her we used to love the restaurant and asked if anything changed. She said that the owner was new. On the way out, we told the manager that due to his policy, we were leaving. The manager started to argue and made it clear that he didn't care
Too expensive for what you get. An entree at $29 was the equivalent to the size of a bowl of soup. Had to buy a $9 side dish just to make it enough for dinner. We normally expect to take home what we can't finish. Here we ate everything on the plate and weren't even full. Quality was OK.
One of the best places in the North End. The spinach ravioli with brown butter sage sauce was very special.
Lots of choices at reasonable prices.
On a hot night the widows were open to the street and with air-conditioning we were very comfortable.
We would go there again.
One of our favorites and we have high expectations each time we go here. Despite that, Villa Francesca met and went beyond those expectations. We were visiting with friends who have high expectations and eat all over the world and they ranked it as one of their top experiences. There are a lot of wonderful restaurants in the North End, but because we can't get there as often as we like, it will be hard to go elsewhere!
We have been going to Villa Francesca for years. We always enjoy the friendly atmosphere, the quaint small size, the service, and most importantly the food. if you don't see it on the menu, they will make it for you. My wife has food allergies, and they always accomodate her needs.
Minestrone soup was good but only luke warm. Voucher could not be used with $39 "seafood menu" special (which I would have gotten otherwise). Prices are high, even for food quality. My wife didn't like the spinach (buttery/oily). In spite of all this, I still give it "Good" across the board but only if money is no object and you're not looking for the best food in town.
I have been to Villa Francesca several times now, and it never dissapoints. The food is fantastic -- especially the fresh seafood. For starters, the oysters on the half shell were excellent, and the lobster ravioli are amazing -- a must have! The Frutti di Mare was outstanding, and the veal dishes we very good.
Of the many good things at Villa Francesca, the best part is the dessert -- the cannoli are the best anywhere! And yes, this includes Mike's and Modern Pastry. I'm a huge Modern Pastry fan, but go to V.F., get the cannoli plan (no chocolate, no nuts), order a cup of espresso, and enjoy -- trust me, this is heaven on a plate.
We had a large group (14) all a la carte and everything went quite smoothly. While the space is small, like most North End spots, the waitress was very accomodating and helpful. The lobster ravioli was a stand-out/must-have and we ended up ordering a 2nd round to share. Overall, very good experience.
We have been going to Villa's off and on for 25 years. It has really changed from a great North End restaurant to just another restaurant charging ridiculous prices for what you get. It use to be charming with Italian waiters, a gentlemen that sang opera. To a place that is very sterile. Too bad.
It's as if being located in the North End is a license to charge an arm and a leg for a small plate of pasta. The food was dissapointing for the price. We made a reservation well in advance, but still had to wait 15 minutes. Had to wait for water because they ran out of glasses. Two of us ordered glasses of wine which were brought out before any food even though we were not even halfway thru our bar drinks. The others ordered soda's which weren't brought out until after dinner was served. Caution, the Gamberi Scampi is a small plate of spaghetti with about 5 small shrimp on it. The cannoli is tiny also. Neither are worth the price. Atmosphere and location are great, but wouldn't go back.
We loved the food here. And, while it is a big restaurant, it is broken down into smaller rooms, which helps keep the noise down. On a beautiful spring night they kept the large windows open and we had a great view of the street scene. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. We highly recommend the seafood dishes, which were excellent, and we loved the bruschetta, too. We will go back!
Very average food; above average prices for quality of food served. No children's menu...had to order full price entrees since we were told each person MUST order one entree, no splitting. Wine selection was mediocre. Waitress was very nice and helpful given rules she was stuck with to enforce.
Although valet service was available, it turned out to be an additional $20 plus gratuity. Not made clear.
Will not return....north end offers much more value in a great many restaurants.
