Take the reviews of poor service seriously. Our waiter was not at all gracious in her interactions with us. To the point that her appearance at our table became uncomfortable.
Food was not the quality expected. Pasta in one dish was undercooked (not close to al dente), and the other dish overly dry. Worse, within an hour of arriving home, my dinner companion and I both felt ill. We suspect it was something in the appetizer we shared.
Had a much better experience the night before at Petite Jacqueline’s where the service was gracious and the food well prepared and presented.
We have been to Vignola 2-3 times previously, so we booked the reservation knowing we would have great service and a great meal. Drinks were great (I’m pregnant so I only had soda water), but service was just ok and food wasn’t much better. Fourtunately our server took part of the meal off (a side dish), as we didn’t take more than a bite.
It was disappointing knowing in the past our experience was amazing. We probably will not return.
Went as group of six for birthday celebration. Seated right on time. Comfortable table and atmosphere. Wait staff was prompt and attentive. Staff knew menu, specials and drinks available and made excellent recommendations. Timing of meal components was spot on, and everyone's meal was thoroughly enjoyed . Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Salted caramel Budino. Start with an amazing dessert! Very quiet Sunday night in mid-November, wine list getting a bit pricey but they do have some really very good Italian reds. Get their charcuterie. Homemade duck bacon! The whole platter was excellent. I went old school with their own fettucini and sausage. It was actually quite light and very good. But you have to have that dessert. Waitress a wee bit bored but the service was fine.
This restaurant is perfectly located in the middle of Old Port! This was my fourth time dining here and it didn't disappoint. We had delicious appetizers, dinner, and desserts. The drinks were fabulous too! Great atmosphere for a group of women to eat and enjoy good company.
Went to Vignola for a pre-symphony dinner. We had the warm dates and Arancini for appetizers. They were good, but a little under-seasoned. Like may restaurants today, no salt and pepper on the table because I guess it's insulting to the chef to re-season their food. Well, okay then, they need to do a better job. We had pork, veal and fettuccini bolognese. These were all good. My biggest gripe was the waitress. She seemed very under-trained and a little uncomfortable. When we didn't want an alcoholic beverage, specifically beer, she didn't know where to go from there. This would be okay if it was an inexpensive restaurant, but I expect a little more at a restaurant of this caliber. I would try it again, but probably not before trying the plethora of other great restaurants in the city.
This was a Monday night visit - maybe a substitute chef? Their house pizza is usually amazing. Hot, gooey and with a delicious hint of oregano. We ordered pizza and a pasta. The pizza was burned on the bottom, had cooled so the cheese balls congealed and there was NO hint of oregano. On the other hand, the bolognese was hot and steaming but had such an overpowering sage flavor that it distracted from the dish's other attributes. We have had these dishes many times so we know when they are excellent. Something was very wrong this Monday night with timing and seasoning. As for service, it was incredibly slow. We'll go back only because we know that they can do better - but if you didn't know that, you might not try again.
Went here with my wife. Wait staff was great. Wine nicely priced. My wife's dinner was cold and under cooked. My pasta was under cooked and pasty. We are no more than half of our meals they were that bad. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Overall, our group found the food and ambiace very good. Seafood stew, duck breast and veal chop meals that were ordered were very good. One thing to note is that the online menu reflects much more than what is actually offered when at the restaurant as some items are offered only if in season or available. This is one place that we will keep on our list as a go to place as we want to try more dishes.
Poor service. No wine knowledge. Cold, dry fococcia bread. Excellent appetizers...polenta bites and rancini! Good pizza. Halibut entree was completely cold. Dessert was average...not worth the calories. Restaurant is VERY noisy. We had to shout across the table to have a conversation. Definitely many better restaurant options in the Old Port area of Portland.
My husband and I ate here last year with some friends and had a great time. The food was good as was the service. This year we recommended the restaurant to some out-of-town guests. We were very disappointed with both the wine (we ordered an Amarone) which was not great and the food was so-so or tasteless. I ordered arancini which had no taste and my friend ordered a pork dish on the menu which was over cooked and dry as were the sides. She couldn't eat it and was turned off from that point and didn't want to order anything else. The waitress did take it off the bill but after we raved about how good it was, we were very disappointed with our meals. Don't know if it was an off night, but will most likely NOT recommend anytime soon.
Vignola & Cinque Terre was a great location for 5 of us to enjoy a delicious, upscale dinner for a bachelorette party. They seated us in the upstairs section so the noise level was low. The quality of food, service and drinks met our expectations and was worth the money. We dressed up but saw many people in jeans there. Definitely worth a try.
Have been here a few times in the past--this visit was a special request from my father for his 78th birthday (he also has been a few times in the past). The duck confit bruschetta and the veal milanese were both great, and the fettucine we had was perfectly cooked as well. Excellent chocolate raspberry dessert as well. Was sad that they had seriously downgraded on the bread, which used to be I think a mixture that included interesting focaccia served with olive oil w/ herbs, but this time was sliced, almost stale, plain bread and some sliced focaccia which was just weird, served with butter. It was an unimpressive start. Also, their house salad, which used to be lovely, was uninspired. Sad to see these small changes for the worse, and it would make me hesitant to return for a special occasion. Also, the service was resistant to putting in an appetizer order before we were ready to order everything, something I have never in my too many years of eating out have never once experienced due to the rationale of the kitchen's preference for timing. But on the whole, my dad was very happy (though he too remarked on the downgraded bread quality and salad) and we had a lovely evening out.
We travel to Maine each summer and try to spend at least a couple nights in Portland. Previous to this dinner we had eaten at both Cinque Terra and Vignola when they were separate restaurants. I was a bit confused as the front looked like Vignola, but then it kept going. The back looked like Cinque Terra, but the bricks were painted. Aha--they combined and remodeled:)
My husband and I shared the gorgonzola stuffed dates--I highly recommend them, and I had the "lobster" cannelloni. The sides--which is often what I base my selection on--were great. Pea shoots, I think fennel, broccoli and a very tasty sauce. To be fair, if you are looking for large pieces of lobster, don't order this, but the flavor of lobster mixed with the ricotta was very good.
For dessert I had the citrus cake. The anisette gelato was superb, the buttercream a bit much, and the other components very good.
I went with my significant other and her mother. Restaurant was recommended by friends and lived up to the recommendation. We shared several appetizers, including the warmed dates, steamed mussels, tomato with burrata, meatballs and shrimp. My significant's mom had the grilled 14 oz ribeye, and we shared the lamb. We ended with charcuterie and cheese. Food was inventive, mostly local, cooked and served well. Our server was outstanding, knew the menu and wine list well. There were only two disappointments. The first was an email during dinner from OpenTable chastising me for not cancelling the reservation when I don't show up because it adversely impacts the restaurant. I emailed OpenTable explaining that I was at the restaurant! And then asked the server what's up? She said there was confusion at the front of the house so they made a mistake. The other disappointment was the wine. We started with the Prosecco Brut, which was flavorful, but not really Brut -- too sweet. The glass of Vermentino that followed was better, especially as it warmed a bit. More disappointing was the Brunello, which at $90 was not too expensive, but was too expensive for a wine that was long past its prime, or stored in less than ideal conditions that prematurely aged it. Overall we highly recommend, just stick with the less expensive wines that probably move faster. We will definitely go back.
Very warm, air conditioner in the front room was off. Had to move to the back of the restaurant where it was cooler, some, not much. Our waitress had absolutely no personality. We wanted to have some bread with our drinks and she would not bring it until we ordered our meals. That's crazy. It was just okay.. Only available reservation was 6:30 yet there were empty tables all over when we arrived and when we left.
Will not recommend this restaurant..
The food was excellent, we started with the arugula and strawberry salad with goat cheddar, it was so fresh and tasty. I had the swordfish and linguine, my sister had the fettuccini and meatballs , and my niece had the margarita pizza. The ingredients were all fresh and very good. The service was slow and not very attentive, but I would go back.
