About Victor's 1959 Cafe

Victor's 1959 Cafe is a little piece of Havana in South Minneapolis offering traditional Cuban fare such as Picadillo, Ropa Vieja, Cuban Sandwiches, Yuca frita, Sweet Plantains, Tostones, and other recipes from Cuban cuisine. Independently and locally owned, you'll find friendly service and a festive environment with lots of writing on the walls!

Visited in 2008 by Food Network's Guy Fieri, Diner's Drive-ins and Dives, who cooked up "off the hook" Cuban food with owner Niki Stavrou. Check our website to watch the episode!

We're a tiny restaurant with only 10 tables inside and 10 more tables on our tropical summer patio. Enjoy our Wines, Beers, Tropical Mimosas and Champagne Mojitos!

Also popular for our unique breakfast menu, served every day! No reservations for breakfast or lunch, just come on in...

It's a small restaurant. Take advantage of making a reservation. The service was quick, and the food was awesome. It's a bit of a drive for us to hit this place. It's worth it!

Best Cuban Sandwich that you will find, perhaps anywhere! This menu is bulletproof, the service is solid and the prices are right. I wish the place was a little bigger/nicer but I'll keep going regardless.

I dined at Victors 1959 Cafe just this week for the first time and had a great time. It's a small but cozy restaurant with a fantastic ambiance and exceptional food. I would highly recommend Victors for a date, or if you're looking for a casual night out!

After driving by over the years, we finally decided to come in and sample the food - and boy are we glad we did! We had a delightful meal with old friends, the food was excellent, service outstanding, and we will definitely be going back for some of the flavors I can still taste in my mind's mouth.

I brought 5 people who had never been there before and they all loved their food. We had a great time and were not rushed.

Food is good for Cuban via Minnesota (average for real Cuban food). My problem with Victor’s is the value. Their prices are 50% too expensive for what you get. I will not be returning for dinner. There are other latin restaurant that are way better both in quality and taste of food and value in the twin cities.

Superb dinner service and food. We were promptly seated at our reserved table. Food was amazing and very flavorful, as usual. Victors is one of our standbys for brunch or dinner.

We had the crab cakes and watermelon salad for starters. Both were excellent. I had the creole shrimp which came with large shrimp in a perfectly spicy sauce with rice and yuca. My boyfriend had the picadillo de la cubana.....ground beef in a creole sauce with potatoes and plantains. Both dishes were extremely tasty! For dessert we had the cream cheese and apple empanadas.....left us wanting more!
Though the establishment is small the staff is friendly and, if you need help in your choices, they're well-knowledged! The food is wonderful!

My son who vacationed in Cuba last year said the food at Victor's was better than what he ate in Cuba. We agree! The cubano sandwich is awesome...and large! The steak and tilapia entrees were also delicious -- we'll definitely be back again.

Loved the food and the unique ambiance. Reasonably priced, excellent service, ample portions. And chocolate cake to celebrate my wife's birthday was not only complimentary, but seriously excellent, though I'm sure it's made elsewhere.

The only disappointment which we should have remembered from a previous visit to Victor's is the extremely small wine pours. Next time we'll either go when we're not imbibing, i.e. breakfast or lunch , or have a pre-dinner adult beverage elsewhere. $7.95 for about 4 ounces of a so-so Spanish or Chilean wine that I know retails for $6.99 a bottle is just ridiculous.

My suggestion to the owner: either make the pours larger, say 6 ounces minimum, or lower the price. I won't be buying a glass or bottle of wine here in the future. Pricing the $6.99 bottle (retail) at $23 for the Tempranillo and $25 for the Malbec is insanity. And one person in our party had a bottle of Spanish beer which was almost $6. Again, overpriced for the venue.

All in all we will be back....for the food and for the atmosphere, which is really fun and unique.

Brought an out-of-town foodie guest who loved it. Said it would be their go-to local place if they lived here.

We had the yuca frita and the empanadas to start. Both were delicious. Entrees varied from Cubano sandwich to Paella and Picadillo. No one was disappointed.

Also great vegetarian options.

I've been to Victor's at least 20 times and have never left disappointed.

The food at Victor's is always great. Our server was super helpful and accomodating to one of us that had food restrictions. She really went out of her way to help my friend out, and was super friendly and reassuring about it. Very grateful for the awesome staff!

What a wonderful restaurant. Great Cuban food, cute eclectic design. It is small, so I suggest making a reservation. Service was a bit spotty, but overall loved it and will return. We had the cheese empanadas (delicious), the pulled pork (amazing), the Cuban (great) and the flank steak (love the creole sauce). Everything was outstanding. We even tried a cream cheese roll for dessert coated in cinnamon and sugar (yum!). Definitely worth the trip. Go early if you can, the patio fills up by 6:30.

This is one of my favorite spots in the city. Especially, on a nice day seating on the patio is best. The paella is very good. Love that they have happy hour on Saturday's too.

What would have been a great dining experience was reduced to a frustrating evening trying to get the attention of a slow waitress who didn't seem to want to be there. We'll go back, but it will be a while.

Delightful patio dining with authentic Cuban cuisine that is reasonably priced and delicious. I needed lots of hot sauce for my taste but for the average MN palate it was perfect. Authentic coffee drinks and cocktails. Beer is only in bottles.

This is a fun, casual place to dine on Cuban food in what seems to be an authentic atmosphere. ( I can't really say; I have never been to Cuba ). The food isn't that creative, but it's good. The alcohol choices are pretty limited. The wait staff is friendly and efficient, and they have a nice patio. We sat inside though, and the air conditioning was blowing on us and made us uncomfortable. Overall, if you want some paella or jerk chicken or pulled pork for a moderate price and a casual atmosphere, this is a nice place.

We have been coming here for years, and it never disappoints. It's a little exotic and a very fun atmosphere. The patio is near the street, but it's ok because they decorated it beautifully so you mostly notice the flowers and the other people out there. The food is delicious and memorable, and they have a knowledgeable and friendly staff. Go for the traditional Cuban fare, the plantains; ceviche; thinly sliced steak with eggs and yuca frita... Don't be shy, you won't get burned here.

This was my second time here, and I brought my mother with me for dinner. I ordered one of the pollo dishes and she had the coconut shrimp. Both were absolutely delicious. The chicken was moist and tender, the shrimp was very unique, not just a deep fried ball of battered shrimp.

Often when you find places with this dive bar charm, the service is just awful (sometimes intentionally, I get it), but here, it is not the case at all. The servers that I have had both times I have been there were so great, it really helps the experience. This will probably be my new go-to place!

Also, reservations are key.

We got there at about 8:45 and we're the last to leave... the staff was AMAZING! They were the perfect combination of sass and fun and had great recommendations. The atmosphere is just perfect, it's not stuffy, it's a little hole in the wall, which most people know about, I guess, and has a great ambiance. We ordered a couple beers, some Cuban sandwiches with one side of chips and one of soup... so so so so good! I can't wait to go back.
