Victoria Stakes Ratings and Reviews
Very attentive service - maybe a bit over attentive. When we were talking, the waitress butted in a couple of times which was a bit irritating. Like the way they have refurbished the pub and there was a good atmosphere. Food was good - liked my mushroom risotto, but not overly keen on the great lump of chicken they put on top. They have an option of asking for chicken to be added. Maybe the burgers and steaks would have been a better option. Overall, I liked it and may go again as it was so nice inside and it's a pub, but there is a good choice of restaurants in Crouch End and to some extent Muswell Hill.
Always liked the look of this place from the outside. Good bar downstairs. Really good room
Upstairs with excellent food. Could probably do with a better wine list and it is not cheap. But there were less costly things on the menu if you wanted more of an everyday meal.
Decor is un-fussy and large windows make for a good ambience.
Food was absolutely delicious! The starters were so much better than expected-amazing flavours in the salmon/beetroot. The roasts were beautiful-the meat was expertly cooked. And the desserts were yummy and very generous in portions as well. We thought it was excellent value!
Good food but service was slow. Took ages to get a beer once ordered. And then we ordered food and had to order our dessert at the same time (we also saw it come out from the kitchen before we had our main!)
If you order a starter to share... why not bring a second plate so we can cut it and share it? Trying to eat off one plate between two people doesn't work.
Still, the food was good so no complaints there!
Superb Sunday lunch. Not cheap but worth the money for quality of food and service. Good ales and wine list. Upstairs room has been nicely refurbished with plenty of space around tables. Surprised that dogs were allowed in the restaurant but the 2 upstairs were well behaved and not a problem.
We went with family to celebrate my sons GCSE results .
The food was all delicious and the crumble and sticky toffee pudding were also lovely .
The service was good, helpful and attentive .
I love it there and go quite regularly .
I would definitely recommend it .
The newly refurbished Victoria Stakes is a triumph. We sat in the beautiful, light & airy upstairs dining room - a gaggle of 4 adults & 4 children. Service was first class: the kids' food came quickly, & the adults' followed. Absolutely delicious Sunday menu which catered for everyone's tastes. We'll be returning!
Love dining room upstairs, Sunday roast ok, chicken good (although no stuffing?!) pork belly needed cooking more, not crispy, overly fatty. Roast potscould do with more cooking, veg nice (but green beans have no business on a roast) puddings good. Waitress pleasant if not a bit forgetful. Trumpet music not great. I wanted to like it more than I did, room upstairs lovely. It's nearly there with more cooking (and stuffing!) great Yorkshires!
We ate in the yard. Good atmosphere, attentive staff but the food was overpriced for what we got. Squid and chorizo starter excellent but small, fish and chips ok but minute portion of peas,
Barnsley chop nice but tiny portion of courgettes as accompaniment. Veggie option proved to mostly consist of broccoli at a high price. Hmmm, they could be a bit more generous, and offer more exciting options.
Altogether Vicky Stakes could do better we thought
The Victoria Stakes is our local pub. I booked Sunday lunch there last weekend as it was convenient. I went there with relatively low expectations (the last time I ate there was a couple of years ago and I thought the food uninspiring and relatively expensive), but keen to see if they had improved following the new opening.
Wow! We were really impressed! The food was excellent. By far the best Sunday lunch I've had in a long time. The presentation of my starter (tuna loin) was amazing and it tasted great. The main (Aberdeen Angus roast) was fantastic - lots of meat and trimmings and, for me, perfectly done. The pudding was also great - chocolate torte, again v well presented. All that for £22.50. Amazing. Really hope they keep it up - if so, they'll have a regular customer!
The only slight downside was the service. The waiters and waitresses were all very nice, but they were a bit disorganised when e.g. bringing drinks to the table and bringing cutlery when they brought out food.
I wanted to support the Victoria Stakes after the fire-refurb but there was a pretty limited menu- I was hard-pressed to find something I really fancied. The 'Soul Food" advertised on the menu was not available. Waitress was very nice and the burger- which I never usually order was tasty but was served with a very mean portion of 'slaw'.
I booked 2 weeks prior only to get a call on the day to move the time back by 30 mins and the table from restaurant to bar area. When we arrived, the very limited menu had sold out of 2 choices already. It was only 8pm! I ordered the asparagus, at £6.50 as a starter and was given FOUR stems! Total. No dressing and about 4 sprigs of rocket on the side. Then the mains arrived ... The Dover sole came with rapeseed oil as apparently the kitchen had run out of olive oil. All in all a huge disappointment. Very over priced and a shame as it used to be a great venu
The Victoria Stakes has been closed for six months due to a kitchen fire, but it is back better than ever. We had a delicious Sunday roast dinner on Easter. It is so wonderful to have our neighbourhood gem back in service. We are so fortunate that we can pop around the corner to have an outstanding meal without having to travel far from home. Certainly worth travelling to Muswell Hill for, especially if you are visiting Alexandra Palace for an event or the Sunday Farmer's Market. Great atmosphere and outstanding food.
Delicious food in the covered courtyard for our wedding anniversary. Excellent well prepared food - the heritage tomato starter was wonderful and my fish was generous, well cooked and served. Service was attentive and friendly without being invasive - perfect.
A lovely evening ...not our first here but certainly not our last!
Fantastic food as always - still our favorite place to eat in North London. However we were really disappointed with the delayed service. They were incredibly understaffed - the waiting staff were completely rushed off their feet when it was really not busy at all. Poor management certainly the problem - you couldn't fault the three waiting staff at all who were incredibly polite and calm regardless. There should have at least been double the staff on the hottest day of the year. Very disappointing - waited 30 minutes for drinks, then at least 40 minutes between courses. We did get £40 off the total bill - but it was not offered to us initially and felt the management were a bit begrudged to give it to us. It really wasn't good having to wait that long - especially for drinks. We wouldn't be as willing to go in the future - regardless of the amazing food.
