VIA UNO Cucina Italiana & Bar Ratings and Reviews
I was there Valentin's Day and my seafood medley was cooked to perfection and the pasta dish my friend had was very tasty, but, smaller than we expected. It seemed more like an appetizer more than an entree. The service and ambiance were wonderful and I plan to go back for the pizza since the people next to us had it and it looked absolutely scrumptious!
I hate to say it, since I am a local, but this was the not what I had expected. The red sauce tasted like it was out of a jar, my boyfriends Spahgetti Vongole barely had any pasta and the cannoli tasted strange. This place ranks a 2- star compared to It's Italia which is a 4-star+!
Food was subpar. Called in am to confirm Cioppino was offered (they said yes), arrived for dinner and only thing close was seafood risotto. The seafood within was marginal quality, the table bread appeared day old, and octopus appetizer had slimy fat film. The demographics here are mostly 70+ y/o, and you will hear several happy birthday singalongs with very broken English which turns into an odd Italian version (three times for us). Better options nearby.
My friends had the Calzone/Pizzas and they were good. I ordered the pasta with the short rib ragu sauce and I thought it was going to be good because I love short ribs. Sadly I was wrong. My dish only had one small piece of short rib and a large bone with a little bit of meat on it. The sauce was a tomato based sauce but it tasted like it was just a can of tomatoes without any seasoning. I was very disappointed with my pasta.
Everything about Via Uno felt very authentic including the hustle, bustle and chat filled atmosphere of a busy and popular traditional Italian restaurant.
The food was lovely.
There were signs the restaurant were struggling a little with what was a very very busy day for them (a sign of their popularity and the huge crowds the record breaking heatwave has brought to the coast by their spot). But our waitress Anna was an energetic, welcoming star who remained smiling, courteous and attentive during a very busy holiday evening.
Without a doubt the best meal we have eaten in the past year. The food was excellent. Wonderful fig and prosciutto appetizer. Very nice arugula and pear salad (pear wasn't quite ripe enough). The gnocchi was stellar, the best I have eaten in years. To round out a wonderful meal they had authentic Italian tartufo! Well worth the drive to Half Moon Bay. *
Friday night @ 6:30 pm. They were out of the delicious brussels sprouts again! 2nd time we have tried to dine there and they were out of the brussel sprouts again! We have dined there on several other occasions. It just seems like who ever is ordering the food does not seem to get it right. We weren't even late, 6:30 pm on a Friday night? What? Just seems to be disorganized and non caring when I told them they were out the last time we tried to dine there. I might try again to see if the 3rd time will be a charm? Who knows?
When on e arrives one is greeted by an accordionist making music, nice touch!
Service was attentive, wines by the glass(Valpolicella) reasonable, but the food left much to be desired. The bread was old, the grilled octopus cold and over-cooked, the risotto a la Speck was unimpressive.
These folks are going to have to try a lot harder or pray that a reasonably good Italian restaurant doesn't open nearby.
The food was disappointing. We started with bread which was cold and tasteless; next was the frito mixto which also had no flavor whatsoever. Neither bread nor appetizer was worth the calories. We also had the special pasta - linguine with mushrooms and shrimp, but the shrimp was BAY SHRIMP! Who uses bay shrimp except for maybe a salad? Really disappointing.
The wine by the glass was good and we enjoyed the accordion player, but we won't be back to eat.
We loved the place so much that we were back the next night to order take out from their regular menu. Even though we placed our order right around their closing time, they were very willing to accommodate.
The food was great, true to their Italian roots, the portions were reasonable and the staff was very helpful in recommending a wine to go with our meal.
Overall a great experience
Our server who also marked off our reservation at the door was not welcoming or friendly. She didn't even say "Welcome!" I was expecting a bit more Italian warmth. She also served my salad before the appetizer. That was annoying. She received the minimal 15% tip because my family and I felt she was not at all attentive or caring in any way. We practically had to beg for the children's dessert that was on the menu. Had we not asked for it, I feel she would have not pursued it. I felt she could have cared less if we were there or not. We sat out on the deck which was nice and casual for our family and our food was good. I will go back and hopefully I will get someone who actually cares that we have chosen to go to their restaurant. The live accordion music made me feel like I was in a little Italian café somewhere on the Mediterranean. I think the restaurant has lots of good points though, and it was great they had a kids menu! But don't let them forget or *ignore* the kids dessert!
My wife and sons took me out for Fathers Day we made reservations though Open Table and as soon as we saw the parking lot we thought even with reservations we we going to have to wait but to our surprise we were greeted at the front door by the co- owner Francesco what a greeting always smiling
He showed us to our table soon to be followed by our server we ordered drinks as we look at the menu... the place was packed a very happy group of diners thinking our order would take a long time
We ordered and talked over our drinks by the time our drinks we finished our server was there with our meals WOW... what great service !!
The food was great I had the lemon pepper-corn Salmon Fantastic !!
They also have a great wine list !!
Great Father's Day,great meal, very good wine !!
My hats off to Via Uno !!
Wasn't nearly as good this time.
We've been here several times and each time it was busy and very good. This time, not so much. The food wasn't up to it's usual standards and the service was poor, despite the restaurant not being very busy.
I'll give it another shot, but if it's the same, I won't go back.
Service was rather cold. Our server kept talking to the folks next to us while semi-ignoring us. We had to ask for bread while other tables had their bread delivered. Wondering if that was because we were the only Asian American customers there. Food was very blend and uninspired. Not worth the price. Two days later, I noticed that my credit card was billed $240 instead of the $235 I specified which included over 15% for gratuities. The only positive experience was the live music provided by the hand organist.
My wife and I enjoyed a dinner here after attending a concert at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society. It was a lovely finish to a lovely afternoon. The salmon special was superb, the accompanying vegetables not so much. Service was very good and friendly. Good place on the "coast".
It is awfully nice that they try to add ambience with an authentic accordion player, but trying to have a conversation over the volume of the playing was a bit difficult. Perhaps it is a weekend thing and I'll endeavor to come back at an off time if I want to actually talk to my dinner companion.
Extremely long wait from ordering our dishes until they were presented to us. The waiter made no effort to keep us informed of the delay. Others around us got their food first, after being seated after us.
As for food quality-POOR, tasteless....food quality not best.
Do yourself a favor, stay away from this restaurant.
Via Uno is slipping a bit. Owner did not acknowledge us, as he was " busy" conducting a business transaction at the bar. Only one other table occupied. The $20 Italian meat and cheese platter was skimpy - way overpriced. Our waiter was attentive , but we missed the female servers and busers who had always provided the ambiance. Food is OK, but the whole experience was dull. Zero energy.
