Vessel at Kona Kai Resort Ratings and Reviews
I have said this many times in the past, this is a restaurant with an amazing menu led by Executive Chef Roy Hendrickson. The food is absolutely delicious, plated beautifully. There is always a nice surprise, the Norwegian Trout was crazy good and my favorite dish, the pork chop I think is the best you will ever taste. Our server, Maran, was attentive but not intrusive.
Although the food was good; the service was good, I was unprepared for the 3.5% surcharge at the end of the meal. I will not knowingly patronize any restaurant that charges this surcharge. It is not fair to the server; the restaurant is making enough profit without gouging the public. If food goes up then raise the price. If wages go up then raise the price. Don't take it out on the server. Too bad. Vessels WAS one of my favorite places to go.
Chef Roy Hendrickson continues to amaze with a culinary experience that all San Diegans and visitors to America's finest city need to take time to enjoy his menu. The lobster Mac & Cheese, pork chop and desserts are not to be missed. Peter, our server was there when we needed him and not intrusive into our dining experience. Defiantly on my top places to eat list.
From the cheese plate, lobster mac & cheese, grilled shrimp to a pork chop that can only be described a heavenly to a dessert of German Chocolate Waffle with house made ice cream. Even Chef Roy came out to see how the meal was and let me mention that Peter our server, was attentive, enthusiastic, energetic but not overwhelming. All in all an amzing meal with great views and a fantastic atmosphere.
Went for Sunday Brunch. Great location and views. Enjoyable entertainment (single guitarist). Good food, but nothing to get too excited about. It could be great, but never will be because the service was indifferent at best. Hostess argued with me about whether I had an open table reservation until I showed her the confirmation-then it was all attitude. Waiter disappeared for long stretches, and apparently forgot to order one of our group's entrees Great idea with a bottomless bloody mary bar, but bartender seldom available (waited once for over 10 minutes-despite a $10 tip) for the glass and vodka, and the condiment station was ALWAYS out of celery, bacon and others. Having been in the business, there's a serious management/supervision problem (at least on Sundays).
God overall. However, We were curious about the "service charge" added to our bill. I asked the guy at the front and he said it was a service charge to cover the health insurance he provides for the employees. First time we've ever run into this. Not sure I agree with this added tax on my bill.
The scallops are perfection! Happy Hour choices are delicious and abundant in size. Peter was our server and his cheerful, welcoming attitude will make any meal a special occasion! A sweet reunion took place while I was there with my mom. A couple was celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Apparently they had their first date at Vessel and their friends who had introduced them were there to surprise them. The restaurant's staff was in on the surprise -really nice to see!
Celebrated my mother's 87th birthday at vessel restaurant. Service was wonderful, the fresh fish was amazing, perfectly cooked with perfectly cooked vegetables. The lava cake dessert was delicious. The noise level inside the restaurant was very loud we sat outside which was very bright and we did not have hats, we moved tables several times trying to find the right spot to keep everybody happy;) The view is gorgeous I just wish the restaurant could control the inside noise a little bit better there was no music on that we could hear .
What a gem! Had never been here before and was so beautiful - so peaceful to enjoy brunch on the patio looking at the marina. Service was SLOW - we waited a good 45 minutes for 2 brunch plates - but we didn't mind since we weren't in a hurry. Live music was pleasant, overall great experience.
Love the staff, friendly and professional. Great bar and menu. We're regulars and always bring visitors to Vessel or just go by ourselves and know we're going to have a lovely time. The live music can get loud and really hamper conversation. Just keeping a consistent sound level would be good.
This place could be so much better. Beautiful place on the water but food was bland and menu was extremely limited. They had live music but it was way too loud for such a place that was anticipated to be tranquil. While service was generally good, we had a big error on our bill. Lastly they have margaritas and pina coladas on the drink menu but they said they do not have a blender. Who does that?
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday 8/6. I called in advance to book the reservation at 6:30. I ended up needed to call back day of to push back the reservation to 7 and the lady who answered the phone was very accommodating and even helped me with getting a dessert set up to be served after dinner.
When we got there we were seated right away however, service throughout the night was on the slow side. Luckily we weren't too hungry, it didnt bother us as much until later in the night.
My boyfriend ordered a beer, myself a glass of wine (free with check in on yelp) and we ordered our food at the same time.
Our appetizer (lobster mac and cheese) came out at a decent time and was very good. Flavorful and even a whole lobster claw of meat.
The rest of our food took a while to come out but when it did it was not cooked as ordered. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye medium rare and it came out pretty well. No pink at all. The waiter apologized and sent it back. He also gave him another beer on the house. I ordered the scallops which seemed to be over cooked/burnt on one side and pretty raw on the other side. I'm not sure if that is how they're supposed to be prepared, but I didn't complain again and just picked at it.
When the ribeye finally came back out it was perfect and delicious.
I was expecting the dessert to come out not too long after we finished our meals as a surprise but it wasn't until a while after our table was already cleaned off.
The server came back around with spoons and mentioned that our dessert will be out shortly. I thought that was a little unnecessary and kind of ruined the surprise.
When the dessert came out it wasn't even the one i chose. It was supposed to be their chocolate lava cake, but it was some chocolate waffle thing instead. Again, I didn't complain but it did also end up being complementary. I'd like to give this place another chance. Maybe for brunch, though I don't really see myself rushing to get back there anytime soon.
We came here for brunch a week earlier and it was fantastic! Great Bloody Mary Bar, food was good, nice ambiance, on the marina. Wait staff was good but bar staff didn't keep up well. Music was great at a reasonable noise level and we were sitting right by the artists.
Enjoyed it so much we came back the following Sunday for brunch. Bloody Mary bar still great but they couldn't keep up with refilling ingredients. 2 of our 4 orders came out wrong and one of them was still wrong the 3rd time. Management made up for it by comping the Bloody Mary's. Our server was great, non of it was her fault. The music was blaring so loud we couldn't talk and took away from the peaceful setting by the bay, this time we sat clear across the room from the musician and it was ridiculously loud. I suggest turning it down!
May have to give it a third chance to see if they respond to suggestions.
We love the Vessel at Kona Kai. On this most recent visit, the service was personal and attentive, despite the arrival of a very large party (wedding rehearsal). Our server made sure we were warm enough on the patio and updated us with the preparation of our food (the kitchen was a bit slow due to the large party). There was a solo musician who gave expert and tasteful renditions of great tunes. One comment however to whoever runs the sound to the restaurant: the music was considerably too loud both indoors and on the patio. It was hard to have a conversation; we had to cup our ears to hear each other. It was deafening indoors--the acoustics of the restaurant are such that loud sounds echo quite a bit. Please pay attention to this in future!
We first had lunch and were seated outside, had a nice view of the harbor and it was a nice sunny day. The waiter was excellent, I don't eat beef or fish so he customized a sandwich with turkey and it was very good, my boyfriend had the clam chowder and he said it was very good.
Later in the afternoon I called the restaurant and asked if they served a chicken breast, the person said yes and I could have it cooked anyway I liked it. So we went down to dinner for
our 6 pm reservation. When a different waiter asked what we wanted to eat I said I would have
the chicken, he said they didn't have chicken, I said but I called and spoke with someone and they said you did. To make a long story short, we had to leave because I couldn't eat anything
on the menu. We ended up going to El Polo Loco which was ok, I at least got my chicken breast.
The first waiter was wonderful, the second waiter didn't want to help us out very much. Kind of disappointed after that dinner experience and the man that told me on the phone they had chicken should find out for sure if they have chicken on the menu !!
My name is Deena Linda's daughter attended for my moms bday. SERVICE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
Told being seated an hour late for a reservation made 2 months in advance
Long delayes in getting drinks and our dinner
So called manager very rude said his name was Tom- Food came out cold
I WILL NOT RECCOMEND VESSELS OR KONA KIA RESORT
My name is Linda . I made reservations at Vessel way in advance of July 3rd. My family was going to be staying there for 2 days celebrating a 70th birthday party. When we arrived at the restaurant at the proper time, we were told that there would be an hour wait even though reservations had been made. We opted to take a table in side. It was very loud. Once we were seated it took close to that hour which we were offered just to get our drinks and water. (so we might as well have waited, right?) My husbands martini glass had LIPSTICK on it so it was sent back and again a wait. The salads were good I will say that but the meals very average or not and some of the food arrived cold. We were accommodated when it came time for the cake.
We were moved to the patio. I do not believe it was our waitresses fault this was all due to poor management. The manager that was working at the time was extremely rude - seemed to be in over his head. His name was Tom. Because of this HUGE delay, by the time we made it to the firepits it was 10. We were told soon after arriving there that we had to leave so we could not enjoy the ambiance of sitting around the pit for a bit. We were told we would bother boaters with our noise. This was a party for a 70 year old - believe me - we were all being very quiet; we
just wanted to visit a bit since there wasn't room in any of our rooms to accommodate 9 people.
Breakfast the next morning almost as bad. We waiting 30 minutes just to get coffee.
Totally unprepared for the number of guests for dinner with or without reservations. Total chaos at Check in area and staff overwhelmed. No excuse as they had the ability to bring in extra staff to assist. Phone in restaurant not being answered. An area with water, etc should have been set up for waiting customers. When good order was finally bought to the table it was luke warm. The management of the hotel and restaurant certainly know from previous experience than 3July will be busy.
Beautiful lication view of the boats. We came right before sunday brunch ended at 2pm. The music was way to loud but it ended at 2 and was replaced with some softer more relaxing music.
The brunch menu is good.
But after 2 the menu is mostly bar food. Sliders etc. Need vegan options.
We enjoyed it.
There was a dead bug in my food, and it took a good 10/15 minutes before we were able to tell a manager. The service staff didn't stop to notice we were trying to get their attention, finally we asked a hostess to send a manager. He comped my meal and apologized then got me a fresh plate. The food is good but the service staff is almost never friendly or timely. We've been here many times without a reservation and we get seated quickly but the service staff is generally slow and unfriendly.
