When the dish I had selected was not available, I ordered the halibut special. It was delicious--very fresh. The waiter was attentive but not intrusive.
Good food and very convenient if seeing a show. Is in walking distance from performing arts venues.
We finished our trip to The Broad earlier than expected and showed up early for our reservation at Vespaio. They were so accomodating. We decided to try out the bar and some cocktails first. My favorite was the Muscal Rita. Oh so good. A little later we went to our table and had a lovely dinner. The waiters were all on top of things without being in your way. It was a wonderful meal.
Food, as always, was great. However, service on this particular evening, maybe because it was Mother's Day, was substandard. It started with no service offered for the first 5 minutes. Then a glass of water was spilled by a waiter over my wife’s lap. We asked for the wine we brought to be decanted, but it took a while for that to happen. After the first pour by our waiter we had to pour ourselves. We asked for bread ($3 for a baguette) to be brought with our appetizer, but the wrong bread (ciabatta) was brought only after our entrees were served. We sent it back and told our waiter it was too late. He said the restaurant would cover the cost and brought us the bread ordered. When we received the bill, not only was the baguette charged but so was the ciabatta. There was also no accommodation made for spilled water on my wife. It would have been nice if the restaurant had waived the corkage fee as we’ve experienced at other eateries. It took forever to flag down the waiter to correct the bill even though he knew we had theater tickets and had to leave.
I need to emphasize that this was an anomaly in our experience at Vespaio, but it needs to be rectified if we are to eat there again.
Not one of the usual well known places near the Music Center, but excellent food in a relaxed environment!
We were greatly disappointed with this visit, especially because we have been to Vespaio several times before, and had expected so much more. The service was bad. We waited 20 minutes to get a menu.... (actually had to get up and ask for one).... and rarely saw a waiter after that (even had to chase the waiter for the bill). Two of us ordered Calzone.... then spent the rest of the meal looking for something inside the dough. (Never found it. Seriously. There. Was. No. Cheese. Inside. The. Dough.... but must admit, the dough was good.) Pepperoni pizza was okay. (Just okay.) Minestrone was okay. (Just okay.) Won't be back.
A very nice place with good ambiance and close to theaters and museums. We went here for dinner and had very bad service. Given the price I expected very good food and service, we had neither. The server was not attentive and the food was good but not worth the price point.
Food was oily and service was poor. I feel puffy from all the salt.
Completely mediocre. Everything we ordered was tasteless, including the pizza. Service was slapdash. It gets by on its location but frankly people would be much better off choosing someplace away from the Music Center and driving to their concerts after dinner. If you are not in the area to see a concert then definitely go elsewhere.
Vespaio has become our go-to for before the music center dinner. The food is creative enough to be interesting, while still having traditional enough flavors and ingredients to be "comforting." This time around we both had pasta that was perfectly cooked, sauced and portioned. Our waiter (Fabio?) was friendly and helpful and was attentive even after the crowd swelled. When he was not available other staff chipped in cheerfully. We did have one tiny issue with having to ask each time to have our water glasses filled, but when we did, they were. I have read some complaints about the slowness of service, but we have never found this to be the case. The service has always been steady and appropriately paced for a relaxing meal. It does get busy before performances, so arrive early and relax. If you finish early, just enjoy a stroll around the neighborhood. One more thing: if that whole wheat bread is indeed made there as our waiter told us, five blazing stars to your baker. That may be the best whole wheat bread I have ever had...
Food was very mediocre, especially for the price. Had the fava bean soup and it had a flour-like aftertaste. The pizza was very average. My mother ordered veal cutlet. We had to ask for a steak knife to cut it and she said the flavor was strange and didn’t like it. And she is an adventurous eater. My brother had a tagliatelle pasta and the meat was tough and some pieces of the pasta were not cooked enough. The waiter never came to check on us after the food was served. We had to keep flagging servers down for stuff - the knife, pepper for the pizza, the check. And it was ridiculously overpriced. Overall was looking forward for a new pre-show restaurant and this is definitely not it.
Food was just incredible. Loved that the pasta was al dente.
Hugo our waiter was amazing!
I like the food. but as a gluten-free diner the dessert menu is disappointing. the staff needs more education on gluten.
Great for pre-show dining. Service is great and food has good variety and is tasty.
Overall, the service was good—just a few issues. First of all, with a reservation and plenty of open tables, I don’t expect to be seated at a subpar table with uncomfortable chairs and plants in our face. I requested and got a better table. Next, the water was not cold at first pour. Finally, I asked for a decaf latte, was told it was just that, then didn’t sleep all night because of the obvious caffeine in the drink. I’d been having decaf lattes at night for a week on a cruise recently and never had a problem, so I know it was not decaf. Otherwise the food was very good, the server was professional and friendly, and the ambience and location was good.
Pre-concert crowd made it very busy. Service was understandably slow at first, but once it came, it was attentive. The pre-fixe menu was a nice surprise, especially the tuna with fennel salad: a large slab of seared tuna sitting beautifully atop a well dressed mix of thin sliced fennel and greens. The branzino was cooked properly, but could have used just a touch more oomph.
The general feeling was that everything was fine. We had salads, appetizers, pizzas, and pastas. Nothing was awful and nothing was great. There were glitches in the service, but the wait staff was very courteous and eager to please. The main draw of the place was its proximity to the concert hall. For that, I would return, but not for the dining experience.
Food and service are great, but also love that it is in walking distance to the Music Center.
Really attentive— notes I was unhappy with a dish without my saying so and offered/exchanged with another dish more to my liking. Well done!
Started out with the spicy martini, just the right amount of heat. Try the organic chicken panini. Also had the spinach pappardelle with beef ragu. Recommend seating out by the bar, can get a little chilly. Valet parking right in front of resturant.
A very lively bar scene with the accompanying noise level hurt my experience. We enjoyed the restaurant and will go back but will request the outdoor patio away for the bar.
Vespaio is our go to restaurant in downtown. They have a great bar with happy hour food and drinks and if we’re with a large group, we enjoy the sit down lunch and dinner. Always great service, especially at the bar. It’s always nice to go to a place where you’re remembered and the service is efficient and the food is served hot and fast.
Excellent place to have dinner before a show at Disney Concert Hall or the Music Center.
Great location, next to Disney for before the concert meals, plenty of space, great service and nice ambiance. They are very accommodating - my wife did not enjoy her meal so they took it off the check and offered her a free dessert to alleviate the inconvenience. I will come here again and try something else.
This is a good choice for pre-theater dining as it's close to the Music Center venues. It has a comprehensive Italian menu and a decent wine list. Pervasive TV screens are a bit distracting.
We were a group of 7 and all of us found the food delicious. Service was great.
Hugo was wonderful! Food was delicious and this is the third time we have been to Vespaio and we will return.
great experience and service, food was amazing too.
Our group of friends comes here frequently before events at the Music Center. Usually our servers are attentive to our time constraints. Last night our service was uneven; attentive periodically and absent at other times. The biggest misstep was neglecting to notify my friends, who arrived after I did, that I had already checked in, leaving me waiting an extra 15 minutes at a separate table, (where I was well attended). My veal chop was excellent as was one friend's Ahi tuna. The Branzino got mixed reviews, with one friend happy with it and the other finding it very boney. Overall I like this place and its food but am troubled by some of its inconsistencies. On one occasion, my friends were served their coffee in paper cups!
Loved the kale salad. The service was great. An additional server came by too frequently asking if all was good. The ambiance was lovely. Noise level: a tad too high. Great for after a visit to the Broad.
Very busy yet very attentive for pre theater meal.
We arrived at 6pm - no one approached the table until 6:15pm - cocktails served at 6:30pm. Waiter told us at 6:30pm that we wouldn't be able to get appetizers and entrees in time to be able to make our 8pm show. We ordered entrees only and got those at 7:15pm (foccacia bread was served at 7pm that we ordered). No food for an hour. Won't be back and we live next door!
Perfect pre-theater dinner! We parked once and walked - it was great.
Went there during a visit to Los Angeles with my family. This place is outstanding. The food is real Italian food (I am Italian, born and raised in Tuscany). We tried the pappardelle with wild board, the linguine with clams and zucchini, the fresh fruit crostata and the torta della nonna. Each one of them felt like home, something that is quite hard to experience here in the US.
Strongly recommend it if you’re looking for a real Italian restaurant in LA.
This is one place where you can always have an outstanding meal. The service is marvelous and the preparation is always enticing. Definitely a place that deserves repeat visits whether for lunch, dinner or their outstanding Happy Hour. Even their little cafe/bistro serves good light bites for breakfast or brunch and the Illy coffee is wonderful. Highly recommend for a great dining experience for any occasion or to just enjoy a great kitchen and atmosphere.
The wait staff was very good, but they were surprised by a couple who moved to the table reserved for us and took a moment to adjust. With the restaurant full, they seem a little understaffed -- but at another time, they might seem overstaffed. I would definitely go again.
The price point for food was too high to sit in outdoor furniture. This was the patio experience. Inside keep lively but a better pizza place that Italian venue.
Vespaio is a great place to go before a concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall and any time your are downtown!
In the area of Disney Hall and the Broad Vespaio offers some of the few dining options and while it's decent, it feels like an Italian restaurant trying to be a standout, but not quite reaching it of two pasta dishes one was was quite average. Waited 15 mins past reservation time for a table, which is just over the limit for me of good service.
Very close to Music Center. A short walk. Food this time was better than last. Had rack of Lamb which is great to share.
