Good food and excellent service. Vespaio is a convenient restaurant with quality food.
Being a just a block from the Music Center puts Vespaio in a perfect location, while the food, service, and ambiance makes it a fantastic dining option. On a few occasions Vespaio has upstaged the performance! The seasonal specialties and pasta dishes have always been satisfying.
The cooks accidentally threw our order away after we received our salad. We had to wait quite awhile between 1st and 2nd course. Waiter threw in dessert for free but our experience was disappointing- I love the food here usually but this time they rushed our main course to make up for the long wait and it was underdone.
Service is great. Pizza was so so, the meat was very good, but the spinish was over done
Very excited to dine here again before heading to the LA Phil. We were going to be late for our reservation so I called though no answer. Arriving 6:30 for our 6:15 res, the stunning, albeit cold, hostess didn't think we would have a table... there were quite a few empty while they squeezed us in a 2top next to a very vocal patron. We then watched a walk in party of 2 get seated at a nearby large 4 top. ??? We spied an open table (ha)!and moved. Bottom line is they seemed stressed and understaffed. There was a function at the front, which could have been the reason. Food was excellent, love the menu and the wine list. Our waitress was a doll, just overly taxed.
We were sat right away, but were left virtually unattended. After about 13 or so minutes I flagged down a server from another area and said that we did not have menus or water and needed our waiter. He had someone bring us water, menus were thrown on our table and we still didn’t see our waiter for another 5-6 minutes. When the waiter came, he didn’t really apologize...he laughed and said something about us not being helped. I told him we had a show at 6:30 and it was almost 530. Instead of apologizing at that point, he just said well let’s get this order in, like it was my fault I hadn’t been served. After that we hardly saw him except to bring us our bill. We didnt have time to finish our meal and had to take it to go. The restaurant was practically empty, so there was no excuse for slow or bad service. I told the Host about our experience and she had little to say...no apology...but, said she would pass the info on. This is a REALLY expensive restaurant and I expected more from it. This was my 4th time there and the other 3 experiences were great. It was a frustrating night.
First time there for dinner before Disney Hall concert - fantastic - we will be back
Restaurant seemed ill prepared and understaffed for pre-Concert crowd. Food, when it arrived, was not as hot as it should have been and had to be sent back.
Food was inedible - cold and not cooked properly.
No one tried to apologize or offer another option.
We enjoyed our pre-theater dinner and cocktails immensely. The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious.
Our server was wonderful. Timing and service outstanding. Food was truly enjoyed.
Service was good. Pizza ok but unremarkable. Beet salad the same. The beef pasta dish was excellent.
Pre theatre was perfect!
Gas went out and they did not notify crowd of people waiting for tables that they could not cook food until we had all been waiting for 15-30 minutes even though they were aware. Salads overpriced as well.
We were very disappointed. We arrived 5 minutes late, check in took over 20 minutes, and we were not seated until 6:35 for a 6 oclock reservation and they seemed to have overbooked, people were told they were running behind. We told them we had 8 pm Concert tickets at Disney, but it did not seem to matter.
When we were finally seated and ordered it was almost 7, then they had a problem in the kitchen with the gas going out. People who were seated after us were told they could only order cold food, so they left.
Our appetizer arrived around 7;15, bread we ordered and asked for 2 additional times never arrived. Eggplant Appetizer was ok, lacked sauce so it was dry. We shared a dish and asked for a extra plate but it never arrived, so we put the plate in the middle of the table and shared from there, and the did not even bring two steak knives.
It was my husband's birthday, never had time for dessert, and I walked out to pick up our tickets at will call, while my husband waited for the check. Definitely has potential, nice location to downtown venues, and great menu with lots of choices, but not a well managed place.
Bad!! Asked to sit in quiet section but they kept bringing in more and more tables until we felt we were dining with the people on either side of us. The waiter did his nest but he told us the kitchen was a mess. The food came out very late leaving little time to eat before our concert—we had left 2 hours for dinner!—but that was enough since our meals were inedible. Not a good experience!
It may have been an off night for the restaurant, but the food was very disappointing, especially for the price point. Most of the dishes were just bland with small portions, but one seafood pasta dish was really inedible- it tasted old. The waiter and manager were nice and tried to make it up to us with a complimentary pizza, but that couldn't save the experience. Really frustrating for us as parents of a baby who only get to go out every once in a blue moon!
This place was underwhelming. For the price i would have liked the food to be a little better. The service was good.
Very good food, and nice atmosphere. The tables were a little close, maybe because of New Years Eve, but it made it hard for the waiters to get around. We were very close to the tables next to us, so we were social with the neighbors, but it was fun because we are friendly, and everyone was going to the same show. VERY close to Disney Concert Hall . Great for before or after a show.
We dined on New Year’s Eve. It seemed as if the restaurant was not prepared for the New Year’s Eve rush, although we had reservations. Service was extremely slow. Food was mediocre at best. We had two different pasta dishes that were not particularly flavorful or hot. Disappointing for a celebration night out.
We do like Vespaio. Perfect for going to Disney or to the Broad, MOCA... it is elegant but casual enough to feel real good. Beautiful venue; makes you feel like you've really gone somewhere, like NY, even if it's really just a night out on the town...
Bland dry food. Found cork pieces in my wine glass. Food took 45 min to arrive. Waiters were inattentive. This my fourth time at this restaurant and its worse every time. Never again.
New Yeas eve at Vespaio was festive and fun
Took over an hour for our food to be served. Fire alarm went off twice, balloons were popping every 15 minutes, and the latex was landing on the guests and in their food. Waiter broke several glasses on floor and a man fumed out of the restaurant yelling. The food was good, once we got it. Our waiter had a very "sorry, not sorry" attitude and had the nerve to tell us the free glass of wine (because we complained about the wait) was coming out of his own pocket. Sorry, not sorry about the lousy tip I left. Next time pretend to care even if you don't. Almost were late to our show even though we allowed 2 hours. Didn't even have time to finish our meal.
We had been to this restaurant a couple of times in the past, but this visit was a real disappointment. We had a reservation, which worked out fine, but it took us an hour to receive our food. Actually, they tried to serve us our dessert after an hour when we had never received our meal. I knew it wasn’t a good sign when the hostess was in the kitchen. Any how, after about another fifteen minutes we had food. Unfortunately my husband’s fish was cold. Although our reawrvation was two hour away before our show (and a short two block walk), we ended up having to literally run to the Ahmanaon as everything took so long (including getting our check).
Anyone can have an off night, but we won’t be going back any time soon.
Went to this restaurant pre Disney Concert Hall on NYE. I liked that they had some items from the regular menu available as well as the prix fixe menu that is typical for holidays. The service was good even though they were quite busy. Would recommend that they have black napkins available,I ended up with white fuzz on my black slacks.
We had reservations at 5 PM. We had to leave at 6:45 PM for the theater without getting our meal. I’ve eaten at this restaurant many times. It was a bad experience this time.
Recipe to GOUGE customers: Purchase one box of $1.00 pasta; purchase a couple ounces of salmon
for a few dollars; purchase some cream to make sauce for a few dollars, and charge $34.00 !!! REALLY?
We went on NYE and were very disappointed that the menu prices were inflated. A small plate of
pasta in cream sauce with a few bits of salmon, and Vespaio called this an entree. Soup or salad was
not included, not even a piece of bread. The service was very slow, and we weren't even sure if there
was a Waitress. She finally showed up, scattered, out of breath, and in a hurry. I think she was the only
Waitress at the restaurant handling all the tables - it seemed that way. There were more employees at
the Hostess area, and more employees concerned about displaying the NYE balloons, which by the way,
kept popping loudly every time they hit a hot light. In today's environment, we don't need to be waiting
for our dinner, and hear loud popping. I think all the guests thought it was shooting ! Perhaps Vespaio should have decorated before the dinner crowd arrived. While we were waiting for our $34 pasta, you
think we would have at least been given a few slices of bread to munch on, but that wasn't even included in the entree price. I cannot believe that Vespaio will stay in business with this type of poor service, over-priced entrees, and over priced glass of wine - small pour for $11, which was the cheapeast on the menu.
I WILL NEVER RETURN !!!
We had a party of 8 scheduled for New Years eve dinner with a show at the Disney Hall to follow. We arrived at 5:00 and left at 6:45 without being served our meal. The restaurant was very disorganized and clearly not well prepared for the evening rush. Very disappointing, we were hungry.
New Years Eve....and they were clearly understaffed. WHile the food arrived in time for us to get to the show, the wait once we sat down, 15 minutes after our reservation time made us be concerned that the food would also be slow. Also, the tables were very close together, and the people at the adjoining table were very strange. We will find another place to go downtown in the future.
The food is excellent but the service is horrendous. We had the same experience the first time, but decided to try it again because it could be the perfect pre-theater restaurant. The couple next to us was seated and ordered at the same time. Our appetizers came out quickly while 15 minutes later they were still screaming for theirs. The tables turned for the main course. They got theirs quickly and 1/2 hour later we were still asking what happened to ours. In spite of the great food, the dining experience was so bad that we didn’t enjoy it.
I was staying at the Emerson and ate there every day. Loved it!
The service was virtually non existent. Took asking several times to get any attention. One of our appetizers, the eggplant parmesan, was cold on the interior and tasteless. The fried calamari was very good. When I mentioned the problem with the eggplant, I was told that I should have called the manager. I don't know how that could be when we couldn't get any server to come over to assist us. The restaurant must have been understaffed. For the main dishes we ordered pastas, and they were passable but nothing special. Over all it was a disappointing meal and expensive for what it was.
We asked for a speedy server because we were dining before an early curtain and had seen comments that service can be slow. We got a great waiter, perfectly timed service and had plenty of time for a leisurely walk to the Ahmanson. Pastas were great. Drinks were excellent. If you order a Cosmo, and you're not wanting grapefruit juice, check to be sure they don't get creative and add it. Fine dinner. No negatives.
Delicioso! Italian food perfectly cooked. A party of eight and everyone was pleased.
Went as a pre show dinner during the holidays with family. Lovely meal, great wine, and outstanding service. Able to get a party of 6 in and out the door in time for the show without feeling rushed.
Food was rock solid good. We waited a little bit too long for menus, water, etc., but once we got going, wait staff was friendly, courteous, prompt and helpful. Great place to go for dinner before going to either Disney Hall or the Music Center.
This is a nice, more casual and kid-friendly alternative to Otium (located on the same courtyard). The pastas are really nice and plentiful - we could have easily shared versus ordering our own, and everything was brought out quickly as we were going to a show at the Ahmanson and pressed for time. Great, well-executed meal, okay service (wish our server was more versed with the menu and offered opinions when asked), and warm patio on the chilly night we were there.
Tasty main courses, flavorful bread, and delectable desserts. Attentive staff willing understand and meet your needs.
We did not make the best choices, I guess, because there were other things I may have have liked better on the menu.
There were three of us: the Bardolino fish was fine, but not fabulous, and it came with a huge separate plate of only sauteed spinach for some reason. Most restaurants would think of perhaps offering a side dish of a smaller amount of spinach, along with some carrots or something else for the price of a main dish. The spinach there was enough for three people. Fish and Spinach makes a meal, I guess. (Asking for bread is an extra $3.)
I ordered the Halibut and although pricey ($42 for fish... and more spinach) the lemon caper sauce was delicious, but for an unknown reason, they put literally one tablespoon of sauce under the fish, and one tablespoon on top of a large piece. Once I had eaten about 1/3 of the fish, there was no more sauce, and that was the entire flavor. I asked for more sauce and they eventually brought me a small cup full of sauce. If it was that easy to provide, why so stingy when the dish is plated and then make me ask? (I poured the rest of the sauce on the 2/3 left of the fish and on the ample amount of spinach and it was tasty.)
The pasta dish we were served was basic and boring and maybe that was because the person eating it does not eat dairy so there was no cheese, but it did not need to be so bland.
We had three desserts: a tasty fruit tart, some mango sorbet, and an apple pie type of thing with ice cream--all very good.
I think this place would be nice to come to after theatre for dessert. Dinner seemed not to be worth the high prices. And the service was fine, but not memorable.
Big plus: it is close to the Music Center and we were going to see a show after dinner.
