Vertical Wine Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Worst place to spend your time. This restaurant doesn't worth a penny. They ruin our valentine dinner. There was no host to take care of customers. After 10 minutes waiting restaurant owner came to us and said there is no empty table and we have to wait even he did not ask us what time was our reservation. We wait almost one hour for a table then we found out about a very limited menu that wasn't our favorite, we asked for a regular menu but they said this is Valentin's special only. They could have notified people about the menu during reservation. We end up to leave the restaurant and looking for somewhere else to have our Valentin's dinner.
I fully enjoyed every minute of my experience with Vertical. What particularly made this night pop was not only the wonderful workers that made the experience but also the owner, whom made sure that everyone's needs are comfortably met. The team made this experience so absolutely enjoyable that it was hard to leave. The food was absolutely exquisite to the very last bite. The way the food was cooked and presented aligned with how perfect their service was. I would definitely be back. It was a marvelous experience.
Overall a very good experience. They had no challenge handling a party of 9 on relatively short notice. Food was good. Wine was good. The only thing was the service - nice, polite, but a bit slow.
Most importantly, would I go back? Would the whole group back? Absolutely, no hesitation at all.
I have to admit were were a bit disappointed last time we dined here. They had wonderful wine options as usual but the food, while good, was rather uninspired. With so many great dining options in Pasadena they really need to put a bit more innovation in their menu choices.
We come here every Christmas season, as a special get-together with out-of-town friends. We really look forward to the new things on the menu and the old thins we enjoy. The host always comes over to make sure we are having the best time possible. Great service, and great wine choices! I try to come more than just at Christmas, but we would never miss our Christmas treat. It was the best. And thanks for also seating us at our favorite table!
Nice place for date. We were there on a Sunday night, and I think the only two people so service was attentive. Server knowledge of the wine, however, was sorely lacking. Food was good, although the scallops were terribly over-priced. The wines, the key reason we went, were OK: the whites needed to be chilled a bit more, and the selection was limited but the flight of bold reds was good.
Really great food. The owner is very charming. The last two times we were here the service was extremely slow. “We aren’t serving decaf coffee tonight.” What? One dessert we ordered was served very differently than described on the menu, but when we brought it up to our waiter, he was like, “Oh well.” Still, the food is OUTSTANDING and Vertical is worth a visit.
I have been a long time patron of Vertical, and made a reservation for 4 before a concert at the Rose. When I walked in the place was completely empty, and a man introduced himself as the new owner. We chatted for a few minutes until my group arrived, and were then seated. We were a little pressed for time but had 90 minutes to get through dinner. Still, service was extremely slow - although we were 4 of 6 total people in the restaurant. The waiter was generally invisible, we couldn't even get our water refilled. When our meal finally arrived we had been seated for almost an hour, and one dish - a steak - was overcooked. Again, invisible waiter, and it took ten minutes to send the steak back, and 15 more minutes to get it sent back out. In the end, we left only 20 minutes before the start of our concert. I spoke to the owner, on the side, and let him know how disappointed we were, and he apologized. HOWEVER, prior to that - he never came to our table to inquire, spent all his time at the bar drinking wine, and didn't offer any compensation such as taking the steak off of the bill, a round of drinks, etc.
I would NOT recommend Vertical for anyone at this point, and I suspect this place will be out of business before year end.
Walking in, the space looks very cozy and inviting. The decor is very nice and modern, although the fabric on the bench sitting desperately needs replacing.
The food was very mediocre and overpriced. The service was not great all. Very slow and had to ask twice for things. For the price, I was hoping for better.
Pleasantly surprised after not having been here for a few years; greeted by owner which was nice. Food was very good with adequate portions. Sishito peppers were delicious! Only odd thing was the small amount of bread/butter brought for 5 ppl; had to ask twice before more was brought. We’ll be back sooner.
The restaurant had a lot of character but the dining room service was awful! We were the only people seated in the restaurant and the waiter was very distracted and even forgot our order returned about 15 mins later asked again oh what did you order? Bar service phenomenal
Food was good. Nice choice of wines. The four of us each ordered a different dish and wine and each was happy. Service was pleasant, attentive and efficient. Desserts were meh but we really only wanted a bite of sweet to finish off our meal so it wasn't a big deal. We were there on a Tuesday night so were treated with a magic show that was quirky but fun. I would suggest to some friends that they go on a Tuesday but not every friend.
We went to Vertical for a week night dinner, the food was good and service was great. We had the entire restaurant by ourselves and it was dead quiet. The manager came to greet us and and he was very nice and friendly. I wish more people will go and the ambience will be better. Maybe some music in the background will help.
I like how easy it is to make a reservation at Vertical, especially for a larger table. Food was good, service was friendly, drinks were tasty. I find their interior to lack the charm you see in the lofted entryway with the plants and bistro lights. Don't get me wrong– the inside is nice; it just feel much more corporate, like a hotel bar/restaurant. Another knock: The music is too loud. They had a DJ spinning dance tracks at our late-night Saturday reservation, which would be fine except... it's not a club. It's not even a lounge, really. It looks like one. But it's not. It just doesn't attract that kind of crowd. Vertical also has this really weird magic show on Tuesday nights, which is definitely a turn off. Magic is just... so... corny! Vertical Wine Bistro has a lot of potential in general, I just think it needs to figure out what it wants to be.
Although noted as a wine bistro, we had a birthday dinner. The food was excellent and well prepared. It was better than some 5 star restaurants. However it was pricey for a wine bistro. The service was cordial. The bar area is good for a social setting.
Try the restaurant for a special occasion.
The most positive thing about our dinner was the quality of the food. I had a very tender perfectly cooked pork chop, with delicious mashed potato and spinach. We orderd a side of grilled asparagus that not only was tasty, but melted in our mouths. My son had the Seafood Pasta, and raved about all the wonderful flavors. My wife had the Duck Duet, that included a savory piece of fois gras. We all sampled that perfectly prepared morsel. Desert included a slice of magnificent key lime pie, and a perfect portion of NY cheesecake. We sat in the rear section of the restaurant near a window. That was fortunate, because the noise level in the bar and front seating area was close to 90 db. A wailing singer with a too big amplifier didn't add to the ambience at all.
Beautiful place with a really nice atmosphere and vibe. Service went downhill once our food was brought to the table. The bar scene was starting to happen and I think the staff just loses their concentration with the diners. Food was average, but the prices were fair. Many tables were empty and I got a reservation within a days notice, so that kind of tells you a lot right there. It's too bad because it's a really nice place.
Vertical Wine Bistro is a little gem tucked away in old town Pasadena. The food and service were fantastic and we are looking forward to going back soon. For the appetizer we had the sautéd mushrooms, plenty for two people to share. For dinner we had the lettuce wedge and the rack of lamb - both excellent. It is on the second floor of a wonderful Pasadena Historical Building that does require using the stairs or the elevator - but it is worth it!
Our almost 3 hour dinner should have been more like 2 hours. We were stuck waiting 45 minutes when their credit card system went down with very little apology. It kind of summed up the whole evening though. Not enough wait staff, so our table along with the tables around us were constantly wondering where the waiters were.
Food and wine were decent, but not worth putting up with the service level here.
This was our second time, and I think it was even better! We had charcuterie and cheese, oysters, risotto, chicken, filet mignon, the creme brûlée and the chocolate soufflé! Everything was perfect and the staff was wonderful. Great cocktails and beer too! We will definitely be back for a third time. Such a pretty place.
VWB has a great ambiance with a true local feel, the food was exceptional, started with an Artichoke then enjoyed the grilled Halibut, was cooked to perfection. Great Wine List and ownership is focused on the customer experience. Great find, slightly off the Colorado S. Pasadena beaten path but well worth the extra block.
