Vertical Wine Bistro
Execellent service. Our waiter was very friendly and shared interesting stories of the building history. It was a quiet evening on a Friday night. It was about 1/3 occupied at 8pm.
Nice place with good food and service
Great for a NYE celebration!
Owner was wonderful but the NYE preset menu, lack of service, and truly odd experience led to my 1 star review.
My husband and I went on New Years Eve at 5:30. We got there 5 minutes early and we’re directed to bar to wait until our table was ready. Other people came while we were waiting and were seated. I asked the owner if he forgot about us and at that time we were seated - 5:50. Was a 3 course fixed menu. We waited and waited- there was one waitress for our section. Approximately 30 minutes after being seated she came to take our order. There were 4 tables of 2 and one of 4 persons in this area. Our order arrived and my husband got a luckwarm soup and I received the wrong salad. Salad was sent back and exchanged. Main course lobster arrived which was also barely warm. Desert was a scoop of ice cream for my husband and I had a chocolate eclair. Bill total $179. Left restaurant at almost 8pm. Will not return. The owner made rounds with the customers and we shared our thoughts with him as did others who were not happy🙁
A must try, you will not be disappointed. We are return customers and others we have recommended to were pleased as well.
I had my first date with my wife at this place, as well as several anniversaries. The food and atmosphere gets better with every visit.
We loved everything about Vertical Wine Bistro!
We had been at the Huntington Library, and I’d randomly picked the Bistro on Open Table. What a winner!
The clams and calamari made for wonderful appetizers. The bar drinks were well-poured and tasty.
The duck and lamb entries were cooked to perfection, and our friend loved his filet mignon. And what’s not to love about creme brûlée for dessert?
Our waitress was attentive and helpful. The owner stopped by our table and shared the restaurant’s and building’s history. (The restaurant is located in historic old Pasadena and the wrought iron stairway in the courtyard is stunning. There’s an elevator available.)
Next time we are in Pasadena, we will definitely be back at the Vertical Wine Bistro!
Worth checking out, beautiful decor, separate dining areas, food prepared as ordered and good. Only draw back was our server was a little hard to understand on explaining menu and wine selections and our appetizer took long, only 4 other tables seated in our area, but we weren't in a hurry, was worth the wait. Our entrees were on time and delicious. Definitely give it a try, we'll be returning for sure!
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Pasadena. The food was excellent, the service was perfect and the ambiance was romantic with the dimmed lighting, fireplace, and comfy booths. It's a great date place!
We love Vertical. The owner Richard is a gem and pays special attention to his customers.
The wait staff is very attentive and nice. Food is good. You can have a great conversation in the restaurant area while there is a more lively bar scene in the front area and its never too loud.
I had a reservation for 12 for a business dinner. When I arrived they were unprepared for our party. There was no table ready for us and no room for us in their nicer dining area. We were placed in the more casual side of the restaurant which was fine, but the service was spotty at best. Water glasses remained empty for far too long. Part of the table got their drink order taken and then the server randomly left without helping the others at the table. It looked like she was a little overwhelmed. Also, one of the diners had a piece of plastic from something in the bottom of her water glass. On the positive side, everyone’s dish was delivered to the table at the same time and the food was good. I might go here again for a glass of wine and some apps but wouldn’t recommend having a larger group eat here.
We’ve been here maybe 2 years ago and the vibe was very different : lively , crowded. This time on a Sat night and the restaurant was almost empty. Food was so so, so not sure what happened.
Great food and cocktails! Our server was spectacular.
Great ambiance, and friendly staff. The beef bourguignon nacho was surprisingly yummy.
Great vibe! Definitely will go back again. Love that owner took the time to check we enjoyed ourselves and provided a tour and background info.
Waited an hour for our food (just 2 of us). Calamari was poor. Better off going to a chain, better tasting and cheaper. Waiter was excellent and apologetic. Did not like host/manager. Menu stated happy hour yet the check did not reflect that. Brought it up to the manager and he said thats only if you eat at the bar. If that's the case, menu should say that. Comped the appetizer, yet he acted as if he was doing me a favor since we "misunderstood" about happy hour. Sea bass was salty and the potatoes that came with the steak were sad and watery. Overpriced and definitely not worth the wait. Best part of the restaurant was the entrance before getting in
The service was great and the food delicious
The service was the main issue. Very poor and slow even though not many people in the restaurant. Food was pretty good but a bit on the salty side. Ambiance great. Little overpriced
Awesome owner and awesome restaurant. The owner came and sat down with us and wanted to just get to know us better. All was just amazing and wonderful. They also have jazz nights and a dj with top 40 music. Great restaurant and yummy food.
I love this place! It’s one of our go-to spots in Pasadena.
Service outstanding from beginning to end. Jass live music pleasant surprise. Ambiance was amazing specially for age group 30-55 - not for clubbing crowd. Elegant yet warm and friendly. FOOD IS DELICIOUS!
Great place to patron as always. Brought a friend from overseas and she enjoyed the ambiance and decor.
My dad and i came for dinner on my last night in town and we had a great experience. The staff was awesome, accommodating and attentive. The food was delicious. I had the sea bass and my dad had the duck. Both were cooked to perfection. The highlight was the wine and cheese plate we ordered. A very nice place, we will definitely return!
We rsvp a birthday dinner for 10. We arrivistes a little early but where sat down by a beautiful window next to a great musician. The restaurant had great ambience and was beautiful. Our server was great, very accommodating. Half of our party showed up after us and she was able to greet and serve everyone.
We went here for a double date/to celebrate a birthday and it was the perfect place for the occasion. The owner welcomed us when we arrived and we ordered drinks from the friendly bartender while we waited for our friends. We we're seated as soon as we got there and ordered a cheese plate with choices recommended by our server which were fantastic! Our food was very good and they even brought out a delicious slice of cheese cake on the house for the birthday girl. The atmosphere is great for a fun night out whether you just want some drinks and apps or a full meal. Definitely recommend checking this place out.
If you are going for a romantic dinner request the back room. Front dinning room is noisy from the bar. area.
The wine menu is great. The menu itself is impressive. BUT do not order the shrimp cocktail. For the price, it’s a rip off. Your basically getting Costco shrimp. That was disappointing. Calamari was good. I ordered the New York steak. Very thin and over cooked. My brusssel sprouts were burnt. But the atmosphere was great.
My wife Yvette and I Celebrated our 20th Anniversary with a large group of friends and family on Saturday night but also had an intimate dinner on Friday night alone. We can’t thank Rick and his staff (especially Martha) enough for the best times ever. Everyone loved the ambiance of the place, the food and the wine & cocktails. We couldn’t have been treated better, thanks again. We would recommend this wonderful place to everyone.
Rick & Yvette
It's a wine bar, but when we asked for the wine list, beyond what is poured by the glass, the waitress looked at us like we were crazy. She called it the bible, cute...but then followed up by saying she knows nothing about it and couldn't tell us anything beyond what they serve by the glass. Again, I repeate, this place has "wine bar" in its name. The owner was sweet and went around greeting the tables but no one could tell us what was served with one of the steaks. Really? Does anybody read the menu at this place? I got the duck and it was pretty meh.
The raw bar menu is really good and a great value, but you have to ask for it so if you don't know they serve seafood platters than you would never know. The only reason I asked for it was b/c I read the menu before reserving a table and chose the location b/c of the raw bar...so I would have been really upset if that wasn't actually menu offering. Overall, it was a fine experience, but memorable for the irony of it all rather than its exceptional nature.
This place was a GREAT find! There were 5 of us and we all truly enjoyed the wine and the food. The servers were so helpful and very attentive to all our needs. They offered great suggestions for drinks and food for our entire stay. Great vibes and great place to chill. We will be back!
Lovely manager!! waiter mixed up the drink order. Was totally empty. Left bf dinner.
This is one of my most favorite places in LA area.
Great location to be able to start with Happy Hour and finish with a nice sit down dinner. Location was great and easy to find. There was a variety of food, and it was very delicious. As for drinks, there was a great selection of wines, beers, and mixed drinks. Will recommend to someone on a date, or after work. This place was great on a Friday evening!
Loved the mystic as you climb up the vintage looking staircase to the restaurant entrance. Upon entering the energy was vibrant due to a small crowd celebrating a birthday at the bar. We were given a table by a window quite a few steps away from the bar. This was awesome since the wall that separted us from the bar kept the noise down. I really wanted to enjoy my husbands conversation and I was able to. Our window allowed us to peak over a few brick buildings that had several lighted strings of round bulbs illuminating a pathway used by pedestrians. It was quite romantic since we were dinning during dusk hours. I ordere the Pan-Seared Salmon. The presentation was unique and quite creative. The salmon layed over a bed of green lentils and a sunny side egg topped the salmon quite flirtatious. My first bite introduced me to an amazing mix of flavors which actually began a festive moment in my mouth. I loved it. The salmon was not overpowering and seared to perfection which I enjoyed very much. I paired my meal with a glass of Rascal Jolivet and it was magnificent. The owner of the establishment presented him self to us and I found him quite charming. He made us feel very welcomed. We can't wait to return.
This is a lovely restaurant that has an interior design that would be appropriate in Architectural Digest. I recommend the new salmon entree with risotto as a side. Sit near the DJ if you want an energetic night. Otherwise dine in the private area to allow for a quiet conversation with family, friends, or acquaintances. For dessert go with the creme brûlée.
It’s great place , service is good considering there was only one waiter that was serving everyone. Great food too it was very tasty .
Made my daughter's birthday very special. Love your menu and wine selection. My family and I were very satisfied and will return in future. Nancy
We would have given this restaurant 5 stars , however we had to be searching for our waiter, once he came he was very friendly . We were celebrating my nieces 27 th bday . Was our 1st time for all four of us, pay a little more attention to your guests next time
Great place for fine dining! They got everything right.
