Vertical Restaurant & Bar - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I'm crushed that this is the last day of Vertical's residency downtown at FCP. The influx if the big box, fast lunch business crowd has made it extremely challenging for the independent producer of fine food and great experiences. Another sacrifice to the world of SIRCorp-style restaurants. Wherever the folks from Vertical land, I'll consider myself lucky to dine with them again.
I had a business lunch and always a little awkward for cuisine for everyone to enjoy. The service was great and from the drinks to the desert and all in between the food was prepared perfectly and temperature was great! My group was more than pleased and impressed!
Our server was very attentive from beginning to end even when his section began to fill up. The food was also excellent however, the portions were quite small for the price we paid for them. My only complaint is that our server did not read us the specials which, when we heard him read them at another table after we had finished our meal, we realized we would have been interested in. Additionally, in the e-mail sent to me from opentable after booking the reservation, I was informed that there was free parking for Vertical guests however, I was not informed that I needed to ask my server for a special coupon in order to obtain this free parking; so we were unpleasantly surprised when we were informed by the parking attendant of this fact and charged for parking on our way out. Despite these two setbacks, the dining experience as a whole was pleasant and I would definitely go back.
When we visit Toronto this restaurant never disappoints us. The food is amazing!! This time starting with warm ciabatta buns and finishing with a spectacular dessert--lemon almond cookies, chocolate sauce and strawberry rhubarb gelato--the meal was especially memorable. The prix fixe was a great value and included a great take on the classic beet salad, a lighter than air gnocchi with a delicious tomato and basil sauce. The chicken came with the best Swiss chard I've ever tasted. We also had a ravioli that was almost as good as Le Quercia (our favourite Vancouver restaurant) which is high praise indeed. The whole branzino was perfectly cooked and was accompanied by roasted squash and brussel sprouts and the most delicious grape compote ever!! The service was professional and welcoming. We're looking forward to going back to Vertical on our next trip to Toronto.
Third time here...this time met a colleague for an end of year business lunch...I had the scallop appetizer - seared perfectly and not overcooked...delicious! Then I had the pepper pasta which was simple yet delicious...followed by one of the best espressos in Toronto...excellent job!!!
We made a reservation online and the next day someone called to tell us the entire dining room was booked but they had room in the lounge. Great!, so nice of them to call and let us know. However, when we got there it was extremely loud in the lounge, I would call it a bar. A lounge sounds more intimate and quiet. I asked the hostess if there was any way we could get into the dining room because the noise was intolerable for a nice dinner but it was booked by a group. When I got back to our table my husband had noticed that they were still serving on their patio so we went outside. Good that he noticed because we would have left and gone elsewhere. I wondered why the hostess did not suggest this when I expressed my dislike for the noise. The weather was just a little cool but still nice to eat outside and they brought over an outdoor heater - great! The food was awesome and the service very good. This is the second time we have dined here and the food is excellent. I had ravioli - I know it sounds ordinary but the chef does wonders with "ordinary" food. My husband had the albacore tuna and he loved it. Their homemade sorbet is delicious. The wine was excellent and my latte was served in an insulated plastic glass which was wonderful. It stayed nice and warm so I could take my time and enjoy it. I think they should tell people how loud the bar is if they intend to have a nice dinner there. No one would want to endure that noise for dinner. A quick bite and drinks is ok but not spending $100-200. A very nice restaurant with very good food and very good to excellent service, I highly recommend it.
A very basic menu that doesn't steer too far away from convention; you have some meat, some fish and some pasta. Nothing unique. Service was friendly (but found it odd that no pepper was offered when food arrived). A very so-so place that fits nicely if you just want a business lunch and keep it 'safe'
Had business lunch for the 1st time to try Vertical. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu which provided a diversified offering of unusual but delicious food combination. The wild boar pappardelle and their featured fish of the day were excellent and followed well their cured meat appetizer of the day. Nice food presentation.
We were shocked to find the place empty for a Friday night. However, it made it comfortable to talk to each other as we were located away from others couples. The Fixed Price was good and the food was made in house, including the pasta. Really enjoyed the atmosphere down town Toronto and they validate your parking if you arrive after 5:00.
We went for dinner before a show at the Sony Centre and everything was superb. A couple of very small missteps in the food but minor and not worth mentioning. For appetizers we had the beet/goat cheese (ask for more cheese, they are glad to oblige) and the yellow fin & albacore tuna. Both delicious!!!! Hubby had the artic char and I had the risotto with duck for mains. Fish was very good, veg's a little skimpy but it left room for dessert! Risotto was excellent and duck was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The crunchiness made a wonderful contrast with the creamy risotto. Loved it!! Dessert - hubby had home made gelato - blueberry with basil (sounds strange) but was divine taste sensation. My cheesecake was also extremely good. The manager was our sommelier and he did an excellent job. His recommendation was perfect and he decanted the whole bottle for us into a carafe as we had brought our wine aerator. Nice touch. To top off everything I ordered the Riesling dessert wine and was very pleasantly surprised to have a complimentary one served to my husband. This was one of the very best dining experiences we have had anywhere. Looking forward to our next visit. So sorry I forgot to ask for server and manager's name so I could personalize my praise.
The prix fixe deal for $39 is an absolute steal. you get 3 courses - appetizer, pasta course, and main. They did not skimp on these courses as some places would during a winterlicious for example. The server was very good, nice, personable. The room is quiet, especially on a Tuesday. not a bad thing but thought it should be noted. if you plan on getting dessert the donuts are outstanding.
My review is not regarding the restaurant because we have been there many times and have enjoyed our previous experiences. The issue with our last visit was our server. There was a lack of service on her part from the moment we sat down to the end of our meal. After taking our orders, she immediately cleared the table of all plates and wine glasses and offered us nothing while we waited for our food. In past visits, we have always been offered a bread plate, but nothing this time. To be fair to her, maybe that is something that has changed and we aren't aware of it. There was a delay in receiving what we ordered, but she never approached the table and let us know what was going on - the person that brought us our plates is the one that mentioned the delay. Overall, a general disregard for our table.
We had gone to lunch for our co-workers retirement - not a nice experience when you are made to feel less important than others.
My wife found the listing for Vertical, and we were very pleased with our dining experience there. Though a Friday evening, it was quiet - which was just what we wanted. Both food and service were excellent. The wine we chose wasn't available, and the waiter made a great alternative recommendation we enjoyed. My fish was perfect, and the sides complimented so well. My wife's ravioli were stuffed with short ribs and delicious, too.
We will go back when in town again, and especially when the patio is open.
I've been to this restaurant twice for a business lunch and both times I've had similar experiences. We've been seated, someone takes our drink order (normally just water), provides water quickly then we don't see them again for 15-20 minutes. Both times everyone has finished their food and we've waited another 15-20 minutes for someone to come by and provide the bill. As much as I appreciate time to chat with colleagues and/or clients I don't budget for 2 hour lunches.
If you're looking for a restaurant where the wait staff are friendly, the food is good, and they don't try to rush you out this is the perfect spot. If you need to stick to a schedule then this may not be the best place to go.
Wine selections are numerous and not pricey. Service is attentive and friendly. Food is excellently prepared and presented. Nothing gastronomically extra-ordinary, but wholesome and delicious. Parking is included with dinner and makes it a great location for the entertainment district.
I found this restaurant reviewed on OpenTable, and since we were planning on driving by the waterfront later, it seemed ideal. What we didn't know is that Vertical provides free parking at First Canadian Place's underground garage after 5 pm (I assume through validation) on dine-in. We only found out after parking elsewhere and coming to the restaurant.
When we arrived (5:30 PM), we were promptly seated. The waiter offered water to start (rather than hound us for a drink order 30 seconds after sitting down). The wine list provided is fairly extensive and well-selected, though we did not opt to ask for pairings (the offerings by the glass are very limited, but are good selections regardless). My date opted for a glass of Terrabianca Campaccio, while I went for a Highland Park 12YO (served in a snifter with a small amount of ice).
We opted for the Valentine's Day price fixe menu, which featured 3 courses (no dessert). Each course was excellent, with the portion sizes appropriate and not over-filling. The pork belly and ravioli were particularly good, and while I enjoyed my seared halibut, the beef short rib my date selected was somewhat tastier. The purees served with each dish are stunning enough to be their own dishes. The dessert and coffee offerings are not as choice, but the cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake that we got tasted good (and definitely filled us). I opted for a biscotti with my espresso, and have to say that the biscotti was probably the best I had (I didn't get to ask for the supplier, which I regret).
Overall, it was a great spot with an excellent ambiance for a V-day date. The food was excellent, and the service more so (very prompt and efficient), and while dressy, the place is not high-brow for this sort of occasion. I am not sure what it is like for weekday lunch and dinner (being located in a high-traffic office building in the heart of the financial district), but would definitely go back.
My husband and I had a pre-theatre dinner on Valentine's day. I had the prix-fixe. He ate a la carte.
His scallops and my tuna were fresh and zingy. My ravioli stuffed with tomato and ricotta on eggplant puree was the best dish of the evening. My halibut was sadly bland, but well prepared. His gnocchi were passable, lacking the inspired tastes of the ravioli.
The server was smart, had great Radar and didn't hover too much!
Prior to heading to the Fleetwood Mac concert recently, I decided to meet my husband downtown and dine close to the venue. Hard to find somewhere for fine dining which is concocted via the tunnel system directly to the ACC. The food was just ok….nothing stellar but the location and ambiance and service was nice.
It was all about the service at Vertical. Our waiter, Sean, was perfect. Not intrusive at all and yet very helpful, attentive and engaging when appropriate. He clearly likes his job, likes people and enjoys being an excellent professional.
The menu has something for everyone. Unusual ingredients and combinations with delicious results. The blueberry basil sorbet was such a treat!
Sean's food recommendations were spot on and the plating was quite good. The fish was fresh and the desserts were yummy!
My friend and I went to Vertical before the theatre one week night. The server was friendly and helpful when taking our order. The atmosphere is nice - it wasn't too busy, so was was quite quiet. The food took a long time to arrive, but fortunately we had left lots of time to eat. It would have been challenging I think had we wanted dessert. When it did arrive it was delicious. The portions are not large though - perfect for me, but might leave someone with a larger appetite wanting more and they are light on carbs, so I recommend ordering a side dish - the frites were amazing. I also would have appreciated a little more attention to my water glass, which I had to ask to have refreshed. Overall though it was a good meal and I would return.
