Piping hot, authentic Italian dishes! Had a date night with my husband and selected this place in downtown Palo Alto. It is nice and quaint, however it can get a bit loud. They were understaffed but managed to handle our needs quite effectively. The food was excellent and came out timely and very hot! It is a simple menu, with great options at great prices! Definitely try it!
This was a birthday party for me thrown by a friend. The food was great (as usual) and the owners and staff were more than gracious. The 'Insalata de Mare' is superb. The 'Pesche del Giorno' is unique; very simply prepared - Chef Massimo knows how to let the ingredients shine through. Pasta and small plates very good. A thoughtful and accessible wine list. Try the Greco di Tufo.
The food was terrible. I had linguine with clams. The clams were overcooked and it was like chewing rubber. I would have said something to the waiter but I was with two ladies who had recommended this restaurant as being great and I did not feel comfortable saying what I really felt. The dessert that we had which was the vanilla gelato with espresso was good but the portion of the gelato was so small. When we walked into the place at 1 o'clock there was no one else there, that should have been my clue. The waiter was nice and the service was OK but I will never go back. There are too many other fabulous places in the bay area. Sorry about that Vero!
Worst waiter service I have ever experienced. He made two very rude and condescending comments to me when I did not care for the wine I ordered, forgot my request for a straw, forgot my husband's request for more bread, failed to bus our table when we were done eating leaving us to sit with dirty plates in front of us, and brought us the wrong check. At least the food was good.
Vero is an excellent small restaurant. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The noise level can get pretty high as there area lot of hard surfaces, but the food is excellent. My wife had ravioli with an excellent sauce and I had linguine alle vongole. This is me favorite Italian restaurant test dish. Veros version was different, but it was excellent. They use the nice little clams that are used in Italy, but it was slightly spicier than I find in most places. Good job "Vero"
We hadn't been there in awhile (we forget about it because it's off the beaten path in downtown Palo Alto), and we were delighted to return.
I had the seafood risotto: not overly rich/creamy. It was "meaty" and flavorful.
I also had the polenta funghi appetizer -- yum! Tangy mushrooms and sweet polenta.
Two others in the party loved the ravioli: light creamy sauce.
Attentive and friendly service.
We ate a Vero to celebrate a birthday. True to their word, the staff does not rush one, yet I noticed very prompt service for those who wished it. The pacing for us was just right. We had an early-ish reservation for 6:30, ordered our antipasti and then when we were ready ordered the mains. At that time the waiter suggested we order "now, as we are getting busy" and indeed they were nearly full.
The Burrata – cow’s milk mozzarella and cream served over arugola was a twist on traditional Burrata. Ususally made from sheeps' milk, this has a creamy cottage cheesy texture inside the thin mozzarella wrapper.
The salad for two was served family style and dressed perfectly! The lamb shank and polenta was quite good as was a fish (can't remember the type) in "light marinara" was delicious. The sauce was more of a broth (but served without a spoon) and there were no starches or veggies served with it. Some bread served on the side would have assisted in eating the broth. Portions are generous but not overwhelming.
We regrettably declined dessert as we were so full! We left about 9.
My favorite Italian restaurant in the Bay Area! Vero is the real deal. The staff allows you the time to enjoy each course and your company, as opposed to trying to turn over your table as quickly as possible. The food is authentically Italian; we've yet to have any dish we didn't adore. The lasagna is to die for, the salads are fresh and crisp, the wines are delicious, my fiancé is pretty taken with the linguine and clams, and the tiramisu is a must! Couldn't recommend this little gem more highly!
This was our first time here, and we sat outside (sidewalk seating), so cannot rate the experience of eating in the restaurant. That said, it was very pleasant eating on a lovely spring evening in downtown Palo Alto. The service was terrific, and our waiter was a gem. Food very good. Ran into neighbors who are discerning eaters, and they frequent the place because of quality and consistency. We will definitely return.
I met a university colleague for dinner to catch up and discuss potential collaboration. We both present as younger than we are and we're both people of color, which may or may not have an impact on how we are served. More often than not, it appears to factor in - particularly around Palo Alto and similar. Our server was... tired? overwhelmed? I don't know what he was going through but he seemed to be struggling to connect with us and disappeared for quite a while. The restaurant was, to be fair, bustling that night. Judging from what we saw of the folks around us, we were getting more attention than some, less than most. The food was decent. Portions were small. The wine was quite good (server recommendation, excellent). It was very difficult to get a water refill (this finally happened at the end of our meal when we were paying). I can't speak to whether this is typical at Vero, but for the price, I'll likely dine elsewhere before seeking to return.
