Vermilion Ratings and Reviews
I come to Vermillion every time I am in Chicago. The food is amazing and very creative. The service is great and the waiters/waitresses really know the menu and take the time to make suggestions and provide excellent service. I have always had a great experience here and would recommend it highly.
We went there to celebrate the medical school graduation graduation of our daughter Dr.Sangeeta Patel. It was fabulous. Our in-laws who were vegetarian were very well taken care of and the rest of us really enjoyed our food too. The ambience and service were great. Highly recommend Vermillion for a special celebration.
I love this restaurant. On this occasion I took a few friends, one who is a real foodie. Everyone loved it. Mikey, our server, was great. Coming up with special hot cocktails for all of us; surprising one diner with his choice for dinner and taking great care of us all night. We loved all the dishes and Anthony's contributions were delicious as ever. It's a party in your mouth. I am moving to Texas and will miss this place but know I'll be back every time I'm in town. Vermilion is a wonderful dining experience.
Very nice restaurant, the decor was excellent and the theme and music. Food was very interesting, a nice mix of two types of food, Indian and Latin.
The service was mediocre at best, but the food made up for it.
The drinks were good as well.
I would recommend the sampler, that seemed to be popular with groups and people that really didn't know what they wanted to try.
Try Vermilion if you like complex flavors wrapped in a bit of heat. This restuarant combines Indian and Latin American cuisines that will please your fastidious guest who considers herself to be a foodie while satisfying your significant other who likes a bit of spice but doesn't like fussy food.
My Mom watched Iron Chef a few weeks ago and loved what Chef Chauhan made. When my parents came to town last week, they were very excited to try out her restaurant. We had a little bit of everything and loved it all!! Our server was excellent. Everything he recommended was fabulous. From the artichoke fritters to the gumbo, yum yum yum! This place is definitely worth trying if you're willing to expand your palate and try something different.
"Perfect combination of sophistication & comfort. Definitely would return to try more dishes. The duck vindaloo arepa, artichoke pakoras, & mysore lamb chops were an amazing beginning treat. The tandoori skirt steak, shrimp paella, vermilion thali were perfect for sharing. If you love fusion your tastebuds will enjoy this amazing savory experience."
Vermillion was everything we hoped it would be and more. The cocktails were inventive and delicious. The pani puri appetizer was a flavor explosion in your mouth. Our entrees were amazingly complex. And, on top of that, the waiter brought us an extra dessert for my boyfriend's birthday. The service also was outstanding. We'll be back again for sure.
We have eaten at Vermillion many times in Chicago and once at the Manhattan location. It is always wonderful. The food is very unusual and always extremely good. We had the tasting menus, one meat and one seafood. Everything was delicious. Service was very slow towards the end of the evening but they were busy for a Thursday night.
Was so disappointed! Heard great reviews, but not sure why. The decor was IKEA. The rarely seen waitress told us that they were only accepting cash - after our meal - which was untrue because the manager took our card. Food was unique which doesn't always mean good, and what did taste good was so tiny on the plate...
I am very easy to please and have literally never written a review for any of the restaurants that I have eaten at via Open Table. The experience was so bad that I feel compelled to state that this is a particularly poor establishment. The food was mediocre, and I believe service can make you accept half way decent food. Our wait staff was indignant and annoyed with us the whole time as if she was the accountant whom the owners asked to wait tables because they were short staffed. This ruined the chances of me thinking I could remotely like the food. There were some bright points, such as the appetizer lamb chops, the cocktails, and the extremely friendly host, however it was all overshadowed by a worker who hates her job.
Saw the head chef on Iron Chef America and heard about her restaurant, Vermilion. Then saw that it had won a number of awards for Best New Restaurant and that they cuisine was Indian-Mexican fusion. Since I like spicy food, it seemed worth a try. We went on a Thursday evening when the restaurant was about 60 to 70% full. This apparently created problems for them and service was very slow; the bartender did double duty waiting on us. Very interesting menu and drinks that do accent spiciness. I recommend the scallops appetizer in particular. I would not describe the food as Indian-Mexican fusion since Indian flavors and spices predominate. The food was excellent and well-prepared. Overall, good experience, marred only by slow service.
Literally a palette party! Great pairings of unusual flavors and textures for a truly multi-sensorial experience. My servers recommendations were all spot on and I only wish I could have tried more things on the menu. Fusion is a big trend for foodies and Vermilion wil not disappoint. Go with an open mind, stomach and wallet. I'm heading to the one in New York in a couple weeks. Not to compare - but to have more!
How about some absolutely wonderful contemporary latin-indian fusion? You may walk in wondering what is all this about? But, we simply LOVED IT!
My wife and I went there for our wedding anniversary and it was simply gorgeous. Our hostess was gracious and accommodated us with our request for a quite spot. The cocktails were absolutely amazing and to die for....the fresh lime pear chili cocktail - you must try it to believe it"
The waiter was courteous, professional and very knowledgeable with his menu items. He suggested vegan and vegetarian dishes for my wife and I simply loved the lobster Portuguese. The food had finesse and was very well presented. The chocolate hedonism dessert was my favorite... I would say, overall a 5 star experienc
I was pleased with Vermillion; I put my dining in the chef's hands. The lamb kabob appetizer was quite good. The lamb was perfectly cooked, but the spices didn't seem to me to be extraordinary, unusual, or something that I couldn't replicate in my own kitchen. The lobster portugues was very nice, but not served as piping hot as I would have hoped. It was as though my plate was finished before my dining partners' and it waited under a heat lamp until all of the entrees were ready. The dessert was exceptional: churros with a beautiful, India-spiced hot chocolate. The dessert was the highlight of the meal. The waiter wasn't terribly helpful with wine; I requested suggestions for the lobster and he demurred, uncertain about the best pairing.
Yes, the cuisine is Indian. No, this is not like you have ever had it, at least in Chicago, in the past. The explosion of flavors and elegance of presentation are outstanding. This young lady is an artist, using everything on her palette to the wonderment of your palate, nose, and eyes. The decor is as striking as watching a vintage filme noir. It is quiet. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and service is surprisingly brisk for a fine dining establishment. It is also excellent as a venue to crash the bar and grab something small with a drink when you are doing a crawl in River North. Priced very reasonably for food with a decent selection of affordable wines. A well-designed, well-executed concept.
The food is eclectic with a delicious fusion of Indian & Latin flavors that is difficult to find. The chef recently appeared on Iron Chef - her creations are just that intriguing. For a wonderful, romantic delicious and a surprisingly affordable (for fine dining)dinner, it is my absolute favorite place to go. For those who like adventure - such as chocolate cauliflower soup (really? yum!), and dishes bursting with flavors, Vermilion is a treat. My favorite server is Michael who is a walking database of food knowledge and will guide you through the menu yielding excellent suggestions based on your input of likes and dislikes. The ambiance is simple yet beautiful - it really is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal.
My wife and I saw the chef on Iron Chef show and had to go after seeing what she cooked on the show and what we saw on te online menu.
We were not dissapointed. Had the scallops and mussels for apps, I had the surf/turf (forgot what they called it) and my wife had the chimchurri steak. My god as all I can say after tasting all the different ingredients play off each other. Excellent food and place to take your loved one.
We will defintely be going back to check out the restof the menu. Also didn't have babysitter for much longer at home so we couldn't try the desserts but I will someday. :)
An excellent dining experience! Our waiter, Mikey, was fantastic - very knowledgable about the menu and educated us in a very entertaining and engaging way about it...he really added to make our evening even more enjoyable and memorable! Great food with incredible flavors and spices...and terrific and unique mixed drinks! We will be back...
I tried the blue corn crusted scallops and fell in love! They were to die for! The only problem was that I didn't want to order a side of naan because I wanted to save room for the lamb entree I ordered. My partner loved his pani puris (a dish that he saw the chef cook on iron chef) and he also enjoyed the calderada (sp?). The ice cream trio we ordered was a little quarky, wish we would have orederd the chocolate cake the table next to us had. The service was attentive, without being intrusive, and helped describe the dishes in tantalizing detail. Also, When you go, you have to try the lime jalapeno drink! Aaammaazziing!
This is one of the most interesting restaurants I have visited in a long time. The Indian- Latin flavors are blended inventively and deliciously. The service was fantastic -- our waiter was friendly and helpful in guiding us through some of the menu items that were new to us. If I lived in Chicago, I'd eat here frequently. It will definitely be on our itinerary the next time we visit that city.
