Amazingly creative menu, allowing a foodie experience for a group that included a vegan, someone who must eat gluten free, and two people who really wanted steak and ribs. The Indian-Latin American fusion worked beautifully. Our group especially loved the cauliflower curry, tamarind ribs, and the chili-glazed eggplant - magnificent. Vermilion is an elegant place without being at all fussy, and the generous table spacing allowed for great conversation and a very warm evening. We will be back.
If you're very patient or engrossed in conversation you won't notice the terrible service.
Food is a great concept and well executed - once it arrives
I have a feeling the place won't survive much longer
Sad, the food is good
Lovely creative food
A friend of mine wanted to come here. I was a little hesitant to check it out, because the reviews weren't consistent. So the restaurant itself is beautiful, the décor was great. We went on a Saturday night and it was fairly empty. As we sat down one of the glasses still had lipstick on it. It was switched out right away when we brought it up.
Our waitress was very sweet and animated. She made some recommendations which came in handy. We ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer and it was delicious. The food does have a good blend of Latin and Indian influence. The food was good. Even the "mild" food had a bit of a kick to it, so just giving you a heads up.
Overall the everything was fine. I don't think I'll go back. My reason is quite simple, Chicago has tons of great food. For the same price, I know I could've gotten better food.
The food at Vermilion is consistently nice. The service has always been slow, and it continued to be that way even on a very slow night. I hope they can fix the problem, but the creativity of the cuisine deserves a bigger audience than it gets.
We wanted to try this place as it was something "new" with a unique concept of Latin/Indian flavors. What we found, however, was that the menu was half Latin and half Indian. The flavors and the dishes are not combined flavors... just the menu was. For that reason, I was less than thrilled with my bland entrees in my thali I ordered. The apps were fine, but the entrees were over-priced and less than exciting. I am glad I went to try it out, but I wouldn't go back...
The food was carefully prepared and had the most wonderful flavors and presentation.
We love Vermillion. Tonight the service was just off. The main course was incomplete. And the time to get drinks and food was unbelievably long. Not usually the case. Hopefully this is a one off situation.
Terrible. Terrible bar service. Bar didn't know how to mix a drink. Food was equally as bad. Kitchen was also slow. Friday night an the place was maybe 25% full. Waitress no where to be found.
Had dinner here and spent the next 2 days sick. Service is fine. Food was ok but considering the price I expected a bit more.
It was alright, jut it was missing something. Not bad, but not amazing.
My wife and I enjoyed our lunch. Will recommend this venue. Love the food and service...
This restaurant seems as though they will be closing soon. They were out of lots of things and not crowded on Valentine's weekend. The service was spotty and the food quality not commensurate with the price. I'm sure it was a great place at one time, but that time has passed.
We went here because we like Indian food, but this was Indian/ South American fusion plated creatively and individually. We had the best butter chicken, and spinach with cheese, we have had anywhere along with a chimichurri grilled steak. We ordered two main dishes and split them. It was unusual and greatly enjoyed.
We waited for our table for more than 30 mins even after having reservation and the whole restaurant was practically empty !! The person in front was not considerate about the situation at all
We absolutely loved the creative, delightful and unique vegetarian options. Plan on sharing so you can experience more choices. Creative space and would love to go back!
This was the most disappointing experience that we've come across in terms of "nicer" restaraunts. We went during restaraunt week to try something new. But the horrible experience started almost immediately. My boyfriend and I walked in and stood by the host stand waiting for the lady behind it to awknowlegde us (like you would at any other restaraunt). She had her head down and was writing something so I didn't expect for her to immediately say something, I was patient. But after a couple minutes she kept her head down finished what she was writing and walked away. Never said "we'll be with you in a moment" nothing. We were just standing there awkwardly. It wasn't even busy! The restaraunt was half empty. Anyway finally another man comes up and seats us. The restaurant itself was nice looking and had a decent ambiance. It had nice decor and dim lighting. So there we are waiting for our server and guess who it is?! The lady that ignored us! She never even bothered to introduce herself of course so I don't have a name. Anyway, I ordered a glass of wine and she came back with it, wine dropping all over the glass. It was so sloppy! Red wine all over our white tablecloth! Then, my boyfriend ordered the same glass of Malbec and she brought it over with the same sloppiness. Red wine dripping everywhere! She actually noticed it that time and covered it up with a napkin. I can't believe that she can't take the minute to clean the glass before bringing it to us. So then we order our food and that was subpar AT MOST! The best thing out of the whole three course meal was the butter chicken and it was ok. I've had better at hole in the wall places. The server was rude and would come and interrupt our conversation to ask how everything was but never stayed to hear our answer "How is everything? Good? Good!" And walked away. I will not be returning to this place nor recommending it to any friends. Save your money for a place that's worth it!
Wait staff excellent, very helpful in choosing items on the menu. Food well prepared, provided plates for sharing appetizers. Margarita great choice for a cocktail. Will definitely return.
I had been to Vermilion once previously for a business meal, and was impressed. So I was pleased to see it listed for Chicago's restaurant week; but this time, I was somewhat disappointed. We went and the food was good and creative, especially my whitefish with a tangy sauce. However, the service was extremely slow, they never came to refill our water glasses, and we had to ask for 4 knives and 1 spoon to be changed, because they were dirty. So the whole experience was definitely not as good as I had expected. I don't know if it was a side effect of Restaurant Week, if the dishwasher was not working properly, or what.
Service was awful. Food took 3 hours to get a full meal. And waiting that long for food, it was subpar. Valet left my car lights on ,which in turn killed my battery. We needed a jump and they still charged us to valet. Overall experience was not worth the money spent!
We were here for Restaurant Week. The food and the service were both excellent. The curved booth where we sat was very uncomfortable and not conducive to eating. The seats are too deep especially for petite people.
The valet service was atrocious and we were left waiting for our car for almost 1 hour after we finished dinner. The valet had the audacity to ask for extra money because it was over the 2 hour minimum even though the last hour had been spent waiting for our car!
Expensive. Fish was very good, but no vegetables were served and the plate didn't look appetizing.
The food was excellent and my server was amazing. My only concern was it really loud.
Good place to go for special occasion
Came here for restaurant weeke with my love. Food is full of flavor and nice ambiance.
Our waiter was nowhere to be found. After we ordered the drinks and given us the spiel on the restaurant week menu which we indicated we would like to try, he disappeared for a while. At least 15 minutes. After the order was taken, another 15 minutes or more went by before dinner was served. Then we waited again to ask for the dessert which is part of the order.
My roommate and I decided to go here for Restaurant Week and were pleasantly surprised! When we walked in at 6pm it was empty, not a great sign. But within an hour the place was filled and very lively! Our lovely waitress Manny made the experience so wonderful. She was honest about recommendations and they we're incredible. The food was out of this world. Highly recommend!!!!
Wonderful dining experience!
I find the Latin Indian fusion really works. I tried Items that I've not tasted before. They were not too spicy as I thought it would be. Overall, everything was quite tasty.
Our waiter was amazing, very kind and thorough. Great place, delicious food.
Our visit to Vermilion during Restaurant Week was so nice! We went for lunch at 11:30. if you want a very quiet place with very few patrons, that is the time to go. The prefixe menu offered three options for each course instead off the usual two. All of the dishes we tried were delicious, especially the appetizers. Several regular menu items looked really interesting but none off us had the room for more foods at lunchtime. I'll be back again to try them out, perhaps for dinner. Service was excellent but then again, there weren't many other diners at that time.
The service and we are not sure why, was very slow. Good service when it was available, but perhaps because we went for Restaurant Week 2017, that may have something to do with it and they were short staffed? Food was good I love the fact it's fusion Indian & Latin. Makes for a tasty combination. The specialty cocktails are a bit expensive, i.e., $18.00 per drink. But delicious!!!
I went with three colleagues for a Restaurant Week lunch. The food was really good, particularly the sweet potato empanadas and the INCREDIBLE dessert. The server was sweet and gave us all a complimentary swig of one of the delicious house cocktails, served in a champagne glass with a rose petal. The decor is jarringly modern.
Where to start? Restaurant didn't notice our note to celebrate a milestone 40th birthday. Server barely came to us asking our needs. Food was not mentioned anywhere how SPICY it was going to be (and BOY was it SPICY!!!) When steaks came out TOO fatty/poor quality, and we wanted to order something else, the chef came to "question" (to put it nicely) our opinion but offered no apology. Server was never seen after that. If something was not right, and we pointed it out, we felt the staff more "rolled their eyes" in frustration rather than make our milestone birthday celebration more memorable. Food took much longer to come out in general. We never were asked how things were, if we needed anything else, how about dessert, any refills on drinks, NOTHING. In fact, we had to wait a good while before asking for the check at the end - thinking someone will come to ask us for dessert or something, anything! The ONLY person that seemed to have any type of customer service was the lady at the bar, slightly older than the other staff, with short red hair and glasses. She was warm in her welcome, answered our concern about where the valet disappeared to, and let us wait inside while we waited for valet.
Really disappointed, as we've eaten there before with a much better experience - of course, that was over 5 years ago.
Horrible, First we waited 30 minutes with a reservation to be seated in a half full room. Service was incredibly slow, 2.5 hours overall time in. Food and mixed drinks both bad. Would never recommend, would never go back.
It took more than an hour for the food to get to us. As we were telling our waitress we didn't want our food anymore and we were leaving the food finally came out. They ended up packing it for us to go but still charged us for basically everything! Do your self a favor dont even bother going here. Unless you're not hungry and want to wait all night for your food. The worst part was that our waitress came to the tables on both sides of us numerous times while we were waiting for our food amd didn't say anything to us.
I went for the first time during restaurant week . the artichoke pakoras, and brazilian feijoada where both good appetizers. The caldeirada de peixe (stew)and the tandoori skirt steak as the main course . The steak was just ok at must but the stew was excellent .For dessert we had the nicaraguan star anise tres leches in a jar which was good.
The waitress was really crappy... the food was good, and the ambience awesome
Food was fantastic, drinks were amazing, and it is beautiful inside. Our server however, was sub-par for the level of dining both expected and paid for. The pace of service was slow, we had to ask for a check and felt ignored because we waited at least 10 minutes between asking for the check and actually getting it. The table next to us finished their courses and she bussed their plates afterwards, all while we waited. We would come back, just with a different server.
Went for Restaurant week and had a very enjoyable experience. The good was delicious! Definitely try the butter chicken!
Excellent food, nicely presented. We started by sharing the artichoke pakora and bitter orange salad which proved to be a good combination. The fried artichoke came with a rich eggplant dip, and the citrusy salad was a nice contrast. My husband had the shrimp curry presented in a tiffin box with rice and papadoum in separate sections. I had the plantain crusted whitefish.
Service was pleasantly unrushed.
It was a very quiet evening at the restaurant and as such the service was excellent - our waitress did a great job explaining the menu and making recommendations. Everything we had was delish - we really loved the scallops, kale, and Cornish hen. Drinks were pricy but the wine was very good.
