Vermilion Ratings and Reviews
We got our appetizer but waited for an hour for our entree and had to leave with the entrees in bags..This was not what we had planned for a quiet business dinner. The restaurant had an incident with the chef getting injured. However, the waiter was not transparent regarding how much time we will have to wait for our entree, hence this became a very painful experience. To the restaurant 's credit they did not charge for the entree although they packed it, but our evening was ruined. Recommend the wait staff to be transparent and honest with the customers,.
Some of the worst service I have ever received at a restaurant. It took 10 minutes for someone to greet us and seat us, our server was drunk, they were out of two bottles of wine we ordered (and it took 10 minutes each time for our server to report the same), they were out of one of the main dishes we ordered, and the server hardly checked in on us. The food was actually quite good, but I don't know if I'd ever subject myself to such terrible service again.
I dined on a Saturday night in a party of 3. Server was very nice and attentive, but service overall was slow, especially since the restaurant was fairly empty. The kitchen sent out the same complementary app twice, and then only 2 of our 3 first tasting courses. This made it seem like the kitchen was disorganized. Food was cold by the time the third person's dish came out. Very long gaps between tasting courses. Lobster, beef, and scallop dishes of the omnivore tasting menu were very good; however, I expected the rest to be better. In a city with so many dining options, I would be unlikely to come back here.
My family was there to celebrate my brother's graduation from Naval bootcamp and his 25th birthday. We had to wait 15 minutes to get seated even though there were several open tables and no one waiting. I called ahead to ask if there was a wait and they ensured there was not. Service was very slow and after we order we waited for an hour before anyone decided we deserved some free appetizer because our food was taking long to come out; The appetizer were literally 5 pieces of cauliflower and fried pickled artichoke fritters; the cauliflower tasted fairly good, the artichoke was not good. As a navy recruit my brother must be back to base by a certain time and we planned around this for the dinner. We ended up leaving without being able to eat and had to rush my brother back. Needles to say we did not eat dinner and he ended up going to sleep hungry. I'm sure by this post you can imagine how upset I was about this. I do not recommend this place at all.
We had a wonderful server named Manny. She explained the cuisine and ingredients and made sure we had everything we needed. She is lovely.
The food was truly delicious and my husband and I loved that we could talk and hear each other.
The music in the background was light and perfect for the ambiance, the black & white photos very interesting.
We will go back again
It starts with a menu of the most creative cocktails, you know you are not in Kansas anymore!
The service is paced appropriately with knowledgeable and professional staff...
...but, it's the food that truly transports you.
We had two appetizers, the scallops and the lamb chops, utterly devine!
For entries, we had the fish stew and the skirt steak, the steak was cooked to perfection with a delicious yogurt mint dipping sauce...both entrées beyond belief in flavor! The broth of the fish stew is so delicious and different with the blending of exotic herbs, we wished we had more to savor the next day - yes, that good!
We did not have dessert, so I cannot comment on them.
We highly recommend Vermilion, and will be back again.
Thank you Chicago for supporting such a fused blend of Indian/Latin flavours....your reputation as a foodie town has been confirmed!
We went for a birthday - and were not disappointed. We are a gluten and dairy free, vegan, no meat and lots of meat family so Vermillion worked well. The waiter was attentive and all the food was good. He recommended dishes for each diet. Even the Vegan left full.
We had a lovely experience at Vermilion. We told them ahead of time that we would be there to celebrate our anniversary. They had a cozy spot set up for us with rose petals strewn on the table. They took very good care of us including a lovely dessert with drinks. The food and drinks were great - really interesting flavors. Highly recommend the artichoke pakora.
Amazingly creative menu, allowing a foodie experience for a group that included a vegan, someone who must eat gluten free, and two people who really wanted steak and ribs. The Indian-Latin American fusion worked beautifully. Our group especially loved the cauliflower curry, tamarind ribs, and the chili-glazed eggplant - magnificent. Vermilion is an elegant place without being at all fussy, and the generous table spacing allowed for great conversation and a very warm evening. We will be back.
A friend of mine wanted to come here. I was a little hesitant to check it out, because the reviews weren't consistent. So the restaurant itself is beautiful, the décor was great. We went on a Saturday night and it was fairly empty. As we sat down one of the glasses still had lipstick on it. It was switched out right away when we brought it up.
Our waitress was very sweet and animated. She made some recommendations which came in handy. We ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer and it was delicious. The food does have a good blend of Latin and Indian influence. The food was good. Even the "mild" food had a bit of a kick to it, so just giving you a heads up.
Overall the everything was fine. I don't think I'll go back. My reason is quite simple, Chicago has tons of great food. For the same price, I know I could've gotten better food.
We wanted to try this place as it was something "new" with a unique concept of Latin/Indian flavors. What we found, however, was that the menu was half Latin and half Indian. The flavors and the dishes are not combined flavors... just the menu was. For that reason, I was less than thrilled with my bland entrees in my thali I ordered. The apps were fine, but the entrees were over-priced and less than exciting. I am glad I went to try it out, but I wouldn't go back...
This restaurant seems as though they will be closing soon. They were out of lots of things and not crowded on Valentine's weekend. The service was spotty and the food quality not commensurate with the price. I'm sure it was a great place at one time, but that time has passed.
We went here because we like Indian food, but this was Indian/ South American fusion plated creatively and individually. We had the best butter chicken, and spinach with cheese, we have had anywhere along with a chimichurri grilled steak. We ordered two main dishes and split them. It was unusual and greatly enjoyed.
This was the most disappointing experience that we've come across in terms of "nicer" restaraunts. We went during restaraunt week to try something new. But the horrible experience started almost immediately. My boyfriend and I walked in and stood by the host stand waiting for the lady behind it to awknowlegde us (like you would at any other restaraunt). She had her head down and was writing something so I didn't expect for her to immediately say something, I was patient. But after a couple minutes she kept her head down finished what she was writing and walked away. Never said "we'll be with you in a moment" nothing. We were just standing there awkwardly. It wasn't even busy! The restaraunt was half empty. Anyway finally another man comes up and seats us. The restaurant itself was nice looking and had a decent ambiance. It had nice decor and dim lighting. So there we are waiting for our server and guess who it is?! The lady that ignored us! She never even bothered to introduce herself of course so I don't have a name. Anyway, I ordered a glass of wine and she came back with it, wine dropping all over the glass. It was so sloppy! Red wine all over our white tablecloth! Then, my boyfriend ordered the same glass of Malbec and she brought it over with the same sloppiness. Red wine dripping everywhere! She actually noticed it that time and covered it up with a napkin. I can't believe that she can't take the minute to clean the glass before bringing it to us. So then we order our food and that was subpar AT MOST! The best thing out of the whole three course meal was the butter chicken and it was ok. I've had better at hole in the wall places. The server was rude and would come and interrupt our conversation to ask how everything was but never stayed to hear our answer "How is everything? Good? Good!" And walked away. I will not be returning to this place nor recommending it to any friends. Save your money for a place that's worth it!
I had been to Vermilion once previously for a business meal, and was impressed. So I was pleased to see it listed for Chicago's restaurant week; but this time, I was somewhat disappointed. We went and the food was good and creative, especially my whitefish with a tangy sauce. However, the service was extremely slow, they never came to refill our water glasses, and we had to ask for 4 knives and 1 spoon to be changed, because they were dirty. So the whole experience was definitely not as good as I had expected. I don't know if it was a side effect of Restaurant Week, if the dishwasher was not working properly, or what.
Service was awful. Food took 3 hours to get a full meal. And waiting that long for food, it was subpar. Valet left my car lights on ,which in turn killed my battery. We needed a jump and they still charged us to valet. Overall experience was not worth the money spent!
