2nd time in over 12 month period I had the same experience. We were the only customers (4ppl) in restaurant for duration of meal and the restaurant was freezing.

This place used to be more festive and fun, but was pretty quiet (dead for a Saturday night, relatively speaking). There didn't seem to actually be any waiters or waitresses - just a hostess and another manager type doing these duties. It took 15 minutes to even get someone to come over to us for our drink order. Service was at a snail's pace throughout and the lack of festive ambiance was very noticeable to say the least. Strange since the place only have 3-4 tables full of patrons?

We used to come here for special occasions, and even though the food is still very good (not amazing, but very good)... I'm afraid we can't recommend. They desperately need to overhaul their service, hire an actual bartender, update the decor, etc., if they want to be what they once were (and if they want to avoid closing their doors). It's depressing more than anything else, since it was once such a fun and interesting destination. Not sure if we'll be back, I'm sorry to say...!

It took nearly 20 minutes to get in our drink order after arriving - despite only 4 tables in use, there were no servers attending us. We had to wave emphatically to flag down a server.

The restaurant had the lighting set at the brightest. When we commented about it, we were told that it was because it was dark during the day (it's now 8PM at night), and they didn't do anything about it.

We used to be regulars at this restaurant. It was one of our favorite places to eat, but the service and ambiance have gone to hell. The food is still great, but quite out of place now.

Not worth the hype about Latin Indian food. I would rather go to Indian restaurant and get real Indian food.

Very good food. Very nice service (the waitress was alone but lovely). The only thing that the restaurant could do much better is the decoration / ambiance, which is really outdated and a little kitch. Not much would be required to modernize a lot the place.

We have been to Vermilion many times. They have a very interesting blend of Latin and Indian dishes that are found nowhere else. Often pretty spicey but not all. Very much worth going to. One of our favorite places.

We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and had dinner here. Absolutely wonderful staff who made us feel special. The drinks were outstanding and the food was delicious. We will be back for more.

Excellent vegan tasting menu. Upscale atmosphere. The restaurant still has problems with timing and inattentive service. Service, when you get it, is always very friendly and wonderful though. I think they are just understaffed.

Good food, but overpriced. Worth perhaps one trip, but I would not go again for dinner. The service was alsl a bit slow. The cocktails are really good though- recommend the mango and tamarind ones.

No other diners at 6pm on Sunday night after the Chicago Marathon when every other restaurant on the street was packed. Good+ food and good+ service but terrible atmosphere. The interior looks like a nightclub rather than a finer dining restaurant. The music was a local radio station with advertisements between songs. The presentation of some dishes is awkward. $10+ appetizers and $30+ main courses demand a better dining room and music.

Food was fabulous. We had 4 appetizers and an entree spit among 3 of us and it was just right. We went early so it was quiet but I have been late before and it can be noisy.

We were pleasantly surprised by our meal at Vermilion! The food and delivery were very creative and definitely delicious. Our appetizer rolled out on a bicycle; so cute! We especially enjoyed the fusion flare in each dish and are certainly looking to coming back for the brunch dishes!

This is our second time here and the food is amazing! There have never been more than 4 other tables occupied and I just don't understand why this place isn't busier. My husband and I are vegan and their vegan options are outstanding and really creative. We went with meat eaters and they loved their dishes, as well. The service is hit or miss and the bar is underwhelming, but the food more than makes up for it.

What an awesome place! We had the most delicious dinner, the Indian-Latin fusion cuisine was to die for. The chef blended different spices together for all of the dishes to give them a unique touch. We loved Vermilion!

My wife and I visited Vermilion a few years ago and remembered our meal fondly. The flavor combinations at Vermilion are super interesting. However, this visit was highly questionable! On a Saturday night at roughly 7:30pm, there was only one other table occupied. Also, it seemed like only one person was working the entire restaurant (hostess, bartender and server). The whole arrangement felt weird and "off". The server was very warm and friendly, so not her fault at all, just a wacky set-up.

Our food was very good. Highlights were the blue corn crusted scallops (with goat cheese no less - very ambitious!!) and the tamarind glazed ribs. The chicken kabobs also were good quality and tasty.

I would return here for the kitchen, but we likely won't because as a dining experience this was uncomfortable at best. Solid for takeaway, but not for dine-in.

The food at Vermilion is some of my favorite in Chicago. The decor is cool, but lacking ambiance because there is no music. They are also understaffed, although the staff they do have is excellent.

I've been here several times and love the ambiance and the food. There was a new manager that evening and it was slow. He was extremely friendly and chatty. However, that wasn't a good thing because an old friend was in town and we were trying to catch up. He was a little too friendly -- he just needs to scale it back a bit.

I'll be back! Really like the food and decor.

Poor food and poor value for money. I order the thali which included a poor butter chicken both in quantity and quality. The thali in the menu mentions 2 entree items but the restaurant said that only one entree is included- what a rip-off!

I am a little disappointed at having to get the manager's attention for menu after waiting for about 10 minutes. There was only another table beside me. He was very apologetic but seem like he is the only one who care enough to rectify the situation.

The coconut shrimp was okay and so was my shrimp dish. The vermilon hedonism dessert is a Must Skipped !! Even a cake mix made by a toddler would surpass this dessert.

I was really looking forward to coming here and the end results was sadly not even close to the nicer reviews I read on Open Table.

My wife and I were drawn to the blend of Indian and Latin cuisines as we are a muti-racial couple and love each other's home cuisines. The food did not disappoint and the tasting menu options were particularly outstanding! We read that the service can be unreliable but our server was excellent and attentive. It was early in the evening and the place wasn't crowded yet. It's a great place to eat before a show. Highly recommended because of the novelty of the fusion cuisine.
