My wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary with dinner at Vermillion. The menu was diverse and tantalizing, and our orders were beautifully presented and very tasty. In addition to locally sourced ingredients, we very much enjoyed a sparkling wine from Charlottesville, VA. Most impressive, I think, was the quality of the service. It is a rare establishment that can see to it that all of your needs are met, while at the same time not hovering, lingering or otherwise disrupting the experience. I failed to note our waiter's name, which I regret. Kudos to him, and to the management of this charming restaurant.

Vermilion was very accommodating upon arrival when I discovered I had booked for the wrong date. They had room for our party (fortunately, rest of group still was parking) and "fixed" my error. Lunch was delicious and everyone was really happy with their choice of entree. One first-time diner in our group was already making plans to come back and have the same cocktail again!

We hadn't been to Vermilion for a while, but after this delightful dinner, it is now back on our meal rotation. From the welcoming greeting, to the bartender's attentiveness and wine suggestion, to our server's spot-on recommendations, and the several inquiries from a very obliging manager regarding our happiness/satisfaction as the meal progressed, it was a hit on all levels. Thanks - we look forward to returning soon!

My dining experience at Vermillion was perfection. My uncles and I had a dinner reservation at 6:15, we received a beautiful table upstairs, alongside the windows (which I had secretly hoped for, but did not request because it was a Saturday evening and I didn't want to be that person). Our server Dan was lovely, gave us all the time we needed and was very helpful with any questions we had.

I had the steak tartare, monkfish and the olive oil cake. I also had a taste of the cavatelli bolognese, duck liver croquettes, lemon poppyseed fritters and flourless chocolate cake... needless to say I waddled out of the restaurant.

I genuinely enjoyed myself, the company and the whole experience at Vermillion and look forward to returning.

We've never been disappointed in the food or the service here. The two servers we request (Anthony and Andrew) are knowledgeable about the food ingredients, select great wines from a large and varied wine list, and in general make great dining even better. Highly recommended.

Another lovely meal if somewhat too frequently interrupted. Food is always excellent with creative menu, beautifully prepared and presented. While not inexpensive, the portions are large so sharing or having a half-size pasta as well as a starter are often enough (and leave you with room for one of the tasty desserts.)
My only quibble on this visit was the somewhat over-attentive service. It wasn't a busy night but I felt like we were being rushed along with someone coming by every 5 minutes to try to clear our plates. It interrupted the flow of conversation and became downright annoying after a while, though everyone was pleasant and polite.

On first entering the restaurant, we had misgivings. But as soon as we were seated and shown the menu, we knew we had made a good choice. We were on a brief trip to D.C. and were celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary. Our waitress immediately brought us complimentary champagne. The service and food were both excellent. We look forward to dining there again on a return trip to the area. Thanks, Vermillion (and Pandora) for a great evening.

It was pleasant although a bit noisy with all the hard surfaces and music. We asked the servers if they could get the music turned down and we think they did, although it was still hard to hear conversation. The food was fine.

Vermillion with its French-American cuisine is one of old town Alexandria’s best restaurants. Their menu is very good and meets most guest requirements.

We loved Vermillion! The asparagus soup was delightful and the tagliatelle was fresh and flavorful without being heavy. There were four in our party and everyone was happy. The service was friendly and attentive. I would love to go back if I get back to Alexandria.

Interesting. Used to be our nice-night-out go-to. Increasingly, tho', there's less that appeals to us on the menu. Last night, it was essentially a celebration of peas and pig. So if you don't partake of swine and have a legume allergy, last night you were s.o.l. My advice -- check the menu online before committing.

We dined on a Sunday night and the restaurant was not busy. Our server was very attentive and his menu suggestions were on point. Some of the cocktails are made with locally crafted spirits and all are delicious. Every bite of food was sumptuous! The only issue we had was my husband's pork entree was a bit overcooked. They offered to replace it which took a little time, but they went out of their way to make up for it. They brought out a delicious gnocchi side plate on the house so that my husband had food in front of him. They also brought out a local bourbon for us to sample. I cannot say enough about the service at this restaurant, not to mention the excellent food!

This was our first time visiting this restaurant. We were so pleasantly surprised as the atmosphere was lovely, and the food fantastic. Our waiter was knowledgable and very friendly and accommodating. The bar in this restaurant is gorgeous. If you eat here, I suggest you ask to be seated upstairs....a gorgeous room. Would highly recommend and will be going back!

Excellent service. Went for brunch on a Sunday, late morning. My child was very welcomed and accommodated. The hostess complimented my daughter’s shoes and showed her that she was wearing shoes that matched. It was very thoughtful and made her feel comfortable and welcomed. Our waitress was prompt and kind. She answered all of our questions and made great suggestions. Plus my coffee cup was never empty. We left feeling full and fulfilled by a lovely brunch feast with friends.

I am visiting from Atlanta. Dan L. was our server and I brought my best friend to celebrate his birthday. He loved it as did I and Dan, in addition the the entire staff, was superb. So so nice was everyone. We had fresh oysters, delicious salads and our entrees were beautifully prepared. Then, the desserts arrived! The Olive Oil Cake with ice cream and rhubarb berry compote was the best dessert I’ve had in a long time. I attended the Culinary Institute of America, so I’m a confident critic. It was lovely. Oh! And the restaurant delivered a handwritten birthday note to the table as well. The birthday boy was impressed which was the whole point.

We went here for my wife's birthday at her request. The food and service were excellent, but she didn't enjoy the ambiance. She wanted to be seated upstairs, but there was a private event that evening (Saturday night). We instead were seated to a window seat on the ground floor. We thought it would be fine, but we had a hightop table and she was in a dress. After leaving the restaurant, we had drinks else where with friends and all she could talk about was how she was disappointed being downstairs and worried about her dress at the hightop table. Again, our food and server were excellent.

I had lunch with my mother on a cold windy day. The restaurant did not have a lot of customers so we were able to sit by the window which was nice because it was sunny. The restaurant is rather dim otherwise. My mother enjoyed the Dorade and in particular the sauce for it. The fish was on a bed of broccoli rabe with the sauce at the bottom. I had the grilled shrimp salad. It had herbs as well as traditional salad greens so if you are not fond of basil or cilantro in a salad, you might want to pass on it. I like them so I found it quite enjoyable. There were an adequate number of grilled shrimp. We enjoyed a brie type cheese after our meal. They did have an interesting dessert menu.

Of the few times we've been to Vermillion this was by far the best. Props to the new(ish) chef! The menu was outstanding and everything was delicious. Seared foie gras was the most inventive dish; glad we split it. Both pastas (second course) were outstanding and on par with any authentic Italian restaurant. Mains were both equally as delicious. Both (yes both) desserts were the perfect end to the night. Would highly recommend and we will be returning!

The tasting menu was inventive and beautifully balanced, with interesting vegetables included in each dish and delicious sauces. We thoroughly enjoyed the Virginia wine pairings, having chosen that option over the imported wine pairings because we weren't familiar with most of the vineyards. They were matched skillfully with the food. The cauliflower and barley dish with pickled mackerel was fabulous, as was the "pastrami" short rib dish. One of the best tasting menus around and at a fairly reasonable price.

I am particular when it comes to eating and this restaurant satisfied in every way including having excellent service and warm, comfortable ambiance. I'm not from the area but will definitely go back when I am nearby, a real gem, highly recommended. I love that they utilize local foods as I don't consume factory meat. They also had good vegetarian options and a spectacular cocktail menu. Our waitress was top notch, dessert was home-made ice cream! We sat by the window, one of us having steak, the other burger - both cooked just right, and just as we asked. The house-cut fries were some of the best I've ever had.
