Vermilion - Alexandria Ratings and Reviews
This was our first time here and it was fabulous! Us and another couple get together annually to celebrate our wedding anniversaries and this year, we were delayed in scheduling so it just happened to be right after my husband's birthday. The restaurant was so gracious and brought a complementary dessert for him. AND! My husband wasn't paying enough attention to understand the vegetable salad did not have greens, and when it was served, the waitress offered to bring him something else, complimentary. Its been a long time since we had such great and attuned service! Plus, the food was some of the best we've had in a long time.
We ordered two glasses of wine, but the waitress brought us a bottle. We corrected her mistake, but the final bill charged for the bottle ($48) rather than two glass of wine ($24). So, we had to correct her again. We both ordered the red snapper. One fillet was good, but the other was inedible (rubbery and dry). It will be a long time before we try Vermilion again.
We both had the fish of the day which was grouper over rice pilaf with shrimp, bacon, and a sundried tomato pesto sauce. At least that's the best I can remember. While it started well enough, about half-way through, the salt started to come through quite strong. I think with the salt from the bacon added to the grouper and shrimp, the whole thing seemed to take on a background taste of sea water. Perhaps that's a little harsh, but for the price, I expected better. My other issue is that when we got there (6:15) the place was fairly sparsely populated and quiet, yet we were seated at a table that was about 1 foot (side-by-side) from another couple. Can you say awkward? Not good for a romantic dinner away from the kids.
This was our first time dinning at Vermillion, we have walked past several times wanting to try it and after looking it up online I decided to make the reservation. The service was amazing and the food was impeccable. They were more than happy to customize any dish for use and all the food is paired very well for flavor.
The chefs wine selection to pair with the meal was also extraordinary.
This is not what I would define as family friendly, nor is it the most romantic venue. However, if you want a nice quiet meal with a close group Vermillion should definitely be on your list.
Went there on a date recently. I've waited plenty of tables in my day and really appreciated the style of service. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. He actually pushed the cheapest bottle of Reisling instead of something more expensive. The food was excellent and overall it was a great experience. The only thing I would recommend would be smaller plates. I could have taken a bath in mine, but still that's itty bitty potatoes.
This was our fourth time at Vermillion and we were once again not disappointed that we returned. The food is always excellent. Very simple preparations of very inventive ideas and twists on old favorites. The food is not particularly flashy, but it is done very well. The service has been hit or miss in the past but when they are good, like this time, they are very good. Unfortunately, we have found that this has to do less with how busy they are and more with the person that you get as your waiter.
Vermillion is becoming a regular go-to place for us whenever we are in old town.
Very pretty restaurant with a great cocktail menu and wine list. The bar isn't terribly attractive or comfortable, though the bartenders were good. The food wasn't great -- sounded better than it was -- but it was good enough. Service was competent but way too fast-paced for the prices level. I didn't appreciate having food nearly thrown at me when I was spending upwards of $60/pp. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu.
We (which is to say I) wanted to go out for my birthday and anniversary which are within weeks of each other. We went on the Sunday before memorial day and made a reservation at 6. When we first arrived there were only a few couples inside already, and only one other family of 4 upstairs (where we sat, by the window, without having to request). By the time we finished eating the place was more full but not too noisy.
When I ordered wine the waitress carded me (which is fine, I look very young) and noticed it was around my birthday. She wished me happy birthday and didnt say anything more, but for dessert she put a candle on the plate and when we received the check the dessert was on the house. Overall great food, great service.
While I let them know that I needed low sodium food in advance and had previously experienced positive and tasty results, this time I was served dry food demonstrating lack of a creative response to satisfying a special medical need.
Others at the table, however, did enjoy their food that did not require special dietary changes.
Vermilion is a safe bet when wanting to treat friends to a great dinner. Always fabulous food, great service and a decent wine list. My only suggestion would add more vegetarian options to the menu! I love pasta but sometimes I like to eat a little on the lighter side - when I ask for a vegetable plate it's always great but I bet with a little effort, the chef could put something on the menu that's really fantastic and animal friendly :)
After reading all the rave reviews of Vermilion (and being a fan of the other Neighborhood Restaurant Group establishments), I was underwhelmed by the food and cocktail. My dining companion and I both agreed the mojitos were terrible -- tasted mostly of flat sprite -- sugary and not very strong. My pork loin was over-cooked, and the dessert (rhubarb upside down cake) had very little rhubarb and was overpowered by the flavor of almond paste. Compared with all the fantastic restaurants in the Old Town area, Vermilion doesn't live up to the hype, and is well overpriced for what you get. I'll be heading back to Jackson 20 and Overwood instead after this.
Think gourmet comfort food. Yes, it may be a hamburger, but it is a hamburger with pepper cheese and a fried egg. One of the desserts we had really did include a Hostess™ Cupcake. However, they managed to pair it with awesome semillion and a great complement of original pastries. Wife had the special fish of the day; clearly made-to-order as she had a complex request on what to leave out and out it came! Younger son had the nutella™ pancakes that were delicious. Middle son had mushroom ravioli that he scarfed up. All in all, a great experience.
My 2nd time at Vermilion, and couldn't think of a better restaurant to take a close friend visiting from out of town. Wait staff were friendly, polite, informative and provided enough attention w/o hovering. Highly recommend the tasting menu - exceptional dishes paired with a variety of bubbly and wines. Otherwise menu items are too difficult to choose among. I thought I would be stuffed after 4 courses; however, portions were smaller than a regular entree and we were very satisfied after dessert. Noise level was acceptable; we could carry on a conversation even though the upper floor was filling up. Prime seats are upstairs next to the windows (2-4 people only). Reservations highly recommended.
We went on my wife's birthday, and both of us ate from the tasting menu. We had shrimp, mackerel, and beef, with rhubarb upside-down cake for dessert. The food was delicious -- a wonderful combination of flavors and textures. The wines were also quite good, and they complemented the food nicely. Finally, the service was outstanding -- unobtrusive, but always there when we needed something. This was the most enjoyable meals we've had in a long time.
