Outstanding food and great service. Highly recommended for a brunch outing!
I had lunch with my mother on a cold windy day. The restaurant did not have a lot of customers so we were able to sit by the window which was nice because it was sunny. The restaurant is rather dim otherwise. My mother enjoyed the Dorade and in particular the sauce for it. The fish was on a bed of broccoli rabe with the sauce at the bottom. I had the grilled shrimp salad. It had herbs as well as traditional salad greens so if you are not fond of basil or cilantro in a salad, you might want to pass on it. I like them so I found it quite enjoyable. There were an adequate number of grilled shrimp. We enjoyed a brie type cheese after our meal. They did have an interesting dessert menu.
Perfect dinner experience. Got a nice seat by the window. Food was incredible. Service was perfect.
Of the few times we've been to Vermillion this was by far the best. Props to the new(ish) chef! The menu was outstanding and everything was delicious. Seared foie gras was the most inventive dish; glad we split it. Both pastas (second course) were outstanding and on par with any authentic Italian restaurant. Mains were both equally as delicious. Both (yes both) desserts were the perfect end to the night. Would highly recommend and we will be returning!
The five of us had a delicious and delightful meal in celebration of an 84th birthday.
Waitstaff was superb. Charming and knowledgeable. Food was yummy all around.
Thank you for being you, Vermilion.
A fantastic, real restaurant which offered quality chef prepared cuisine, expertly prepared cocktails, and a professional, knowledgeable staff.
A great experience and an acceptable cost. The wine pairing evening meal was exceptional.
Food was delicious and the service was great! It was nice to have the option of ordering small and large plates because there are so many fun things to taste!
Celebrated my spouses birthday, was great food, amazing dishes and tastes, nice ambiance, and intimate.
The tasting menu was inventive and beautifully balanced, with interesting vegetables included in each dish and delicious sauces. We thoroughly enjoyed the Virginia wine pairings, having chosen that option over the imported wine pairings because we weren't familiar with most of the vineyards. They were matched skillfully with the food. The cauliflower and barley dish with pickled mackerel was fabulous, as was the "pastrami" short rib dish. One of the best tasting menus around and at a fairly reasonable price.
I am particular when it comes to eating and this restaurant satisfied in every way including having excellent service and warm, comfortable ambiance. I'm not from the area but will definitely go back when I am nearby, a real gem, highly recommended. I love that they utilize local foods as I don't consume factory meat. They also had good vegetarian options and a spectacular cocktail menu. Our waitress was top notch, dessert was home-made ice cream! We sat by the window, one of us having steak, the other burger - both cooked just right, and just as we asked. The house-cut fries were some of the best I've ever had.
Exceptional food, including great options for the vegetarian in our group. Im going to be talking about the ricotta gnocchi for quite a while. We were up stairs and it was not easy to carry on a conversation because of the noise level.
Wow! Dining Saturday versus Sunday is a very different experience at Vermilion - both times wonderful but totally different. Sundays are "cozy" Vermilion, where if you dine early enough you'll pretty much have the place to yourself. Very lovely. But Saturday it is hopping! Food was great (salmon not QUITE as perfect as I'd had on Sunday...), service still top-notch though busy. Still, our server did not neglect us at all. This is my fave go-to date night or special occasion spot. Just know you might see a different side to Vermilion depending on the day of the week.
One of my favorite restaurants in Old Town. They seated us upstairs next to a window, which was the perfect spot for a couple. For larger parties, there are bigger tables throughout. The bartenders make perfect cocktails. Food is top notch. I highly recommend.
My fiancé and I had a fantastic time. The fresh pasta was amazing. Well done on the gnocchi and we haven’t had them that light and fluffy since Italy. Amazing job.
Just fantastic and loved he entire experience.
We had the tasting menu with wine pairing. Food and wines all paired well, pace of the dinner was good, every dish was excellent. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive.
Great food and wine. I like sitting upstairs... it's a bit more secluded.
I had a good dinner. Thanks Vermillion.
Brilliant -- can't wait to return!!! From the moment you step foot inside ,the decor is stunning. The greeting by hostess and servers make this lovely place as welcoming and inviting as it is classy, right from the get-go. They accomodated our (very) late arrival, and the food was prepared perfectly.
And...we arrived at this cozy yet classy restaurant with a 5-year old in tow. I was a little worried. But the staff did not bat an eye. They treated him as graciously as the adults at the table.
We were celebrating a special dinner with out-of-town grandparents on their last night...and everything about this place made me proud to have taken them here, from the decor to the top-notch wines and wonderful food.
The servers struck the perfect tone between professional, friendly and knowledgeable. The food is TO DIE FOR, from the expertly crisped skin on the salmon to the creative, evocative taste of the chamomile sorbet, and surprises like the pickled mackerel and barley in the cauliflower appetizer. I can't wait to bring the hubby for a special night out! An absolute GEM in Alexandria!
Stellar service and delicious food. Every dish was outstanding. Again, the service was spectacular. We felt very welcome and will definitely be back.
Went for brunch. Friend got the French toast and it was delicious. I got the pork belly breakfast sandwich and it was okay, but missing something to make it great.
This restaurant has consistently served truly delicious, generous meals with perfect service every time I have frequented it. The dishes are creative without being overly precious. It has become one of my favorite Washington area restaurants.
Vermilion continues to delight and surprise us with its unusual, delicious dishes. Everything is very fresh and local. Our server, Andrew, was helpful and friendly. We were celebrating Valentine’s Day, a little late, and it was excellent.
Excellent service and food. A cut above
We did the tasting menu and enjoyed eveeythung on it! The portions were decent size for a tasting menu. The service was great!
I came here after years of being away from the Alexandria area because I remember having great, whimsically named cocktails. This isn't the Vermillion I remember. Although the food was tasty, the service was not decent. I walked in with a reservation, the host acknowledge it on his computer screen, then he had to "go see if my table was ready." The restaurant was fairly empty at this time. The couple behind us did not have a reservation and they were seated right away at an empty table. We had to wait another 5 minutes for our table. The waitress (one of 3 we had serve us--and I'm not just talking about the ones that simply bring out the food) was extremely soft spoken and even after telling her I was having trouble hearing her, she didn't attempt to say anything louder. We also had a waiter who was difficult to hear speak. At one point, one of the waitresses brought us the check while I was biting into my burger (clearly we were not even close to done with our meals). After we had finished our meals, it took too long to get help to get our check brought back to us. Lastly, I had booked my reservation through Open Table, and I received an email stating that I had missed my reservation. It was a mild annoyance to have to send an email to confirm that I had been at the restaurant. I might try this place at night for some drinks, but I will not be back for food.
We went for my sister's birthday. The food was very good and so was the wine. The service was attentive without being oppressive. We had to wait a bit, even though we had a reservation, but the bar is nice. The cardamon ice cream, included in the ice cream sampler, was really outstanding. I had the duck as an entree and it was ok, not as crispy on the skin as I like and a bit overcooked for me, but definitely within acceptable range. The waitress was very patient and there were no complaints when one of our party asked to have her bill separate, even though we had not said this at the beginning. Also, my gratitude for just bringing an extra dessert with a candle for my sister rather than an embarrassing singalong.
It was wonderful. The food, wine and service were terrific. Loved the warm salad, foie gras, salmon and pasta. All were delicious.
It took forever to get our cocktails and it was not busy! Felt the server should have ask if we desired cocktails on our first contact. It took awhile to order our cocktails and it took a long time to receive them. We were there at 6:00 the day after Valentine’s day and it was fairly empty. Food was good as was the meal service.
My boyfriend and I went here for dinner on Valentines Day. We normally avoid going out for dinner on this day only because restaurants are usually over crowded and the staff all but forces you out the door after your meal. This was not the case at Vermillion. The menu was well thought out and our waiter was kind, polite, and happy to answer any questions we had. It was a great meal, great ambience and we didn’t feel rushed at all. We will definitely be back.
Went for a Valentines/lunch date - great service and delicious meal at a great value. Drove over from Arlington (not far). Enjoyed the atmosphere. Surpassed expectations. Will be back.
We came for a early Valentine’s Dinner and it was fantastic. Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. I will definitely recommend and come back again!!
We always enjoy our dining experience at Vermillion! Great job to the chef and staff!
We went in for a pre Valentine's Day dinner and had a nice table by the window upstairs. The server, a young man who seemed to really know his stuff directed us towards a great wine for my husband and I had the Clementine drink which was quite tasty. I had the pork and my husband had the salmon I believe. Both super tasty. Also was given a complemtary glass of Rose since they knew we were there for valentines day. The desserts were superb. Overall an amazing nite added to by an amazing waiter! We love this place. Cozy, quaint and special! The bar downstairs also looks like it could be fun with friends!
Once again we enjoyed the Tasting Menu with wine pairings. Our waiter, Andrew, was very well informed, pleasant, and efficient.
We enjoyed his comments on the courses and the wines.
Went on early Monday evening so the place was super quiet. Service is excellent and the food is amazing. Best salmon I have ever tasted! Great cocktails too! Well worth the price I think.
Vermillion never disappoints. I prefer the ambiance and food (creative, nuanced, top quality yet cozy and charming) here over other well known area restaurants. Slightly better value, too.
The food was good, service was spotty. Arrived at tail end of brunch service. Unfortunately, as other tables emptied out, they were not bused. Halfway through our meal, all I could see were empty glasses left on *every* table. My dining partner ordered a draft beer. After an average wait, the waiter returned. Instead of informing us that the selected beer was out, the waiter chose a different beer and delivered it to the table. @_@ My companion drank the beer, but would have liked to make the decision herself.
Had a great time celebrating an early Valentine’s Day brunch with my parents. We felt well taken care of and the food was delicious. The mini muffins were so good!
Wonderful meal. Terrific service and expert bartender
