Vermilion continues to delight and surprise us with its unusual, delicious dishes. Everything is very fresh and local. Our server, Andrew, was helpful and friendly. We were celebrating Valentine’s Day, a little late, and it was excellent.

I came here after years of being away from the Alexandria area because I remember having great, whimsically named cocktails. This isn't the Vermillion I remember. Although the food was tasty, the service was not decent. I walked in with a reservation, the host acknowledge it on his computer screen, then he had to "go see if my table was ready." The restaurant was fairly empty at this time. The couple behind us did not have a reservation and they were seated right away at an empty table. We had to wait another 5 minutes for our table. The waitress (one of 3 we had serve us--and I'm not just talking about the ones that simply bring out the food) was extremely soft spoken and even after telling her I was having trouble hearing her, she didn't attempt to say anything louder. We also had a waiter who was difficult to hear speak. At one point, one of the waitresses brought us the check while I was biting into my burger (clearly we were not even close to done with our meals). After we had finished our meals, it took too long to get help to get our check brought back to us. Lastly, I had booked my reservation through Open Table, and I received an email stating that I had missed my reservation. It was a mild annoyance to have to send an email to confirm that I had been at the restaurant. I might try this place at night for some drinks, but I will not be back for food.

We went for my sister's birthday. The food was very good and so was the wine. The service was attentive without being oppressive. We had to wait a bit, even though we had a reservation, but the bar is nice. The cardamon ice cream, included in the ice cream sampler, was really outstanding. I had the duck as an entree and it was ok, not as crispy on the skin as I like and a bit overcooked for me, but definitely within acceptable range. The waitress was very patient and there were no complaints when one of our party asked to have her bill separate, even though we had not said this at the beginning. Also, my gratitude for just bringing an extra dessert with a candle for my sister rather than an embarrassing singalong.

It was wonderful. The food, wine and service were terrific. Loved the warm salad, foie gras, salmon and pasta. All were delicious.

It took forever to get our cocktails and it was not busy! Felt the server should have ask if we desired cocktails on our first contact. It took awhile to order our cocktails and it took a long time to receive them. We were there at 6:00 the day after Valentine’s day and it was fairly empty. Food was good as was the meal service.

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner on Valentines Day. We normally avoid going out for dinner on this day only because restaurants are usually over crowded and the staff all but forces you out the door after your meal. This was not the case at Vermillion. The menu was well thought out and our waiter was kind, polite, and happy to answer any questions we had. It was a great meal, great ambience and we didn’t feel rushed at all. We will definitely be back.

We went in for a pre Valentine's Day dinner and had a nice table by the window upstairs. The server, a young man who seemed to really know his stuff directed us towards a great wine for my husband and I had the Clementine drink which was quite tasty. I had the pork and my husband had the salmon I believe. Both super tasty. Also was given a complemtary glass of Rose since they knew we were there for valentines day. The desserts were superb. Overall an amazing nite added to by an amazing waiter! We love this place. Cozy, quaint and special! The bar downstairs also looks like it could be fun with friends!

We enjoyed his comments on the courses and the wines.

Went on early Monday evening so the place was super quiet. Service is excellent and the food is amazing. Best salmon I have ever tasted! Great cocktails too! Well worth the price I think.

Vermillion never disappoints. I prefer the ambiance and food (creative, nuanced, top quality yet cozy and charming) here over other well known area restaurants. Slightly better value, too.

The food was good, service was spotty. Arrived at tail end of brunch service. Unfortunately, as other tables emptied out, they were not bused. Halfway through our meal, all I could see were empty glasses left on *every* table. My dining partner ordered a draft beer. After an average wait, the waiter returned. Instead of informing us that the selected beer was out, the waiter chose a different beer and delivered it to the table. @_@ My companion drank the beer, but would have liked to make the decision herself.

To get a wide sampling, we ordered the restaurant week course as well as the three other courses, including desserts. The Duck Toast was the best of what we tried, but all the other items were underwhelming. We found the initial impression to come on strong, but there was no complexity to flavors . The beef short rib was cooked very well, but again, the seasoning was very one-dimensional and it didn't linger at all.

We were there for Restaurant Week dinner and the first thing that tells you how great this restaurant is is that when our table was not ready at our reservation time, the manager bought our drinks while we waited in the bar area. Not all good restaurants will do that, but the great ones will. When we were seated, our server (and former culinary student) Andrew was great. He did not lead us astray with his recommendations, although I am not sure you can go astray at Vermilion. As we have often told others, this is our favorite restaurant in Old Town Alexandria, and remains so due to the quality of both the food and the people who work there.

We recently moved back into the area and were so happy to see it was restaurant week in Alexandria. Our first thoughts were to head to Vermilion! It was great to see the restaurant has not lost any of its allure and its menu seems to just get better. Wonderful food from our starter beet salad to our homemade cavatelli and decadently rich short ribs. We topped it off with their wonderful lemon fritters. Their wine list is nice but a little over priced in comparison to other restaurants in the region. That's a shame. Overall the ambiance and service and wonderful food are the reasons to go to Vermilion! Enjoy

Service was terrible. W'e waited an extraordinarily long time for our lunch to be served. The restaurant week menu was quite unsatisfactory. We asked to be moved to another table which we could see was vacant but were told that it was reserved. No one sat that table for the entirety of our meal.

The service was excellent by a knowledgeable waiter. The food was sub-par for a Washingtonian top 100 restaurant. The salad served had grit in the lettuce and mushrooms. The fish was overcooked and tough.
