Vermilion - Alexandria Ratings and Reviews
It took forever to get our cocktails and it was not busy! Felt the server should have ask if we desired cocktails on our first contact. It took awhile to order our cocktails and it took a long time to receive them. We were there at 6:00 the day after Valentine’s day and it was fairly empty. Food was good as was the meal service.
My boyfriend and I went here for dinner on Valentines Day. We normally avoid going out for dinner on this day only because restaurants are usually over crowded and the staff all but forces you out the door after your meal. This was not the case at Vermillion. The menu was well thought out and our waiter was kind, polite, and happy to answer any questions we had. It was a great meal, great ambience and we didn’t feel rushed at all. We will definitely be back.
We went in for a pre Valentine's Day dinner and had a nice table by the window upstairs. The server, a young man who seemed to really know his stuff directed us towards a great wine for my husband and I had the Clementine drink which was quite tasty. I had the pork and my husband had the salmon I believe. Both super tasty. Also was given a complemtary glass of Rose since they knew we were there for valentines day. The desserts were superb. Overall an amazing nite added to by an amazing waiter! We love this place. Cozy, quaint and special! The bar downstairs also looks like it could be fun with friends!
The food was good, service was spotty. Arrived at tail end of brunch service. Unfortunately, as other tables emptied out, they were not bused. Halfway through our meal, all I could see were empty glasses left on *every* table. My dining partner ordered a draft beer. After an average wait, the waiter returned. Instead of informing us that the selected beer was out, the waiter chose a different beer and delivered it to the table. @_@ My companion drank the beer, but would have liked to make the decision herself.
To get a wide sampling, we ordered the restaurant week course as well as the three other courses, including desserts. The Duck Toast was the best of what we tried, but all the other items were underwhelming. We found the initial impression to come on strong, but there was no complexity to flavors . The beef short rib was cooked very well, but again, the seasoning was very one-dimensional and it didn't linger at all.
We were there for Restaurant Week dinner and the first thing that tells you how great this restaurant is is that when our table was not ready at our reservation time, the manager bought our drinks while we waited in the bar area. Not all good restaurants will do that, but the great ones will. When we were seated, our server (and former culinary student) Andrew was great. He did not lead us astray with his recommendations, although I am not sure you can go astray at Vermilion. As we have often told others, this is our favorite restaurant in Old Town Alexandria, and remains so due to the quality of both the food and the people who work there.
We recently moved back into the area and were so happy to see it was restaurant week in Alexandria. Our first thoughts were to head to Vermilion! It was great to see the restaurant has not lost any of its allure and its menu seems to just get better. Wonderful food from our starter beet salad to our homemade cavatelli and decadently rich short ribs. We topped it off with their wonderful lemon fritters. Their wine list is nice but a little over priced in comparison to other restaurants in the region. That's a shame. Overall the ambiance and service and wonderful food are the reasons to go to Vermilion! Enjoy
Service was terrible. W'e waited an extraordinarily long time for our lunch to be served. The restaurant week menu was quite unsatisfactory. We asked to be moved to another table which we could see was vacant but were told that it was reserved. No one sat that table for the entirety of our meal.
Food was good, service spotty. I had to ask for a spoon for my yogurt appetizer. I had to ask for butter for the toast that came with my entrée. The server acted like butter for toast was an unusual request. Each time a course was brought to the table, my husband and I were given each other's food and had to swap. Three or four people were involved in the service, so I was surprised by how many mistakes were made over the course of the meal.
Also, we were there for Restaurant Week, and the vegetarian entrée option advertised on their website had been dropped and replaced with a meat dish. I was able to request a meatless version of a different dish, but that was a bit of a let-down.
Still a good experience on balance, but not what I expected.
Amazing!!! The hostess was helpful when I made reservations for the wrong day. She quickly fixed my error and sat my wife and I at a really nice table. Our Waiter was very friendly and didn't push the upsales. The food was amazing, this chef is the best in Alexandria. I highly recommend this restaurant for any and every occasion.
The Duck Toast appetizer was fantastic. We shared a large plate of Mezzelune and that also was fantastic. The sauce and pasta was stunning. The last dish was Cobia and Pork Loin and were not fans of our respective dishes. The Cobia tasted over done and the Pork Loin dish was too vinegary for my taste. Some one else may prefer these dishes. The service was one of the best we've ever experienced and noted the server's skills to the manager. Lastly, somehow there was a note on Open Tables that it was a birthday (it wasn't) and even though we explained this to our waiter he gave us an apple pine nut desert that was great + a couple of glasses of a dry Rose wine that paired perfectly. I'd like to give Vermillion 5 stars for all the service and 2 dishes that were fantastic. Maybe I'm being a bit too picky. We'll go back and try some other dishes.
Vermilion never disappoints with its creative cuisine and warm ambiance. Love that the dining room is quieter than most so that a group can have a table conversation. The wait staff seemed a bit stretched but it was probably just an off night. We will return!
A wonderful evening! I chose this restaurant to meet with out of town friends staying near old town based on reviews. It did NOT disappoint, and we will be back. A unique and interesting menu, excellent service, great presentation, yummy food and excellent wine selection.
