Very good. The only thing I might have wished for was more than two non meat options on the menu.
I had the pleasure of dining at Verjus on Friday night when they had the fixed price bistro menu. Since it was St. Patrick's Day weekend, they featured corned beef and soda bread for the occasion. I had the unpotted shrimp for an appetizer, corned beef with a light horseradish sauce as an entrée and an oatmeal crisp type of dessert with fruit at the bottom. All of the portions were adequate and the shrimp had a delicious cream sauce and the corned beef was tender and cooked to perfection. The wine list was extensive and I had a reasonably priced Italian Merlot. One of the best features of this restaurant is the attentive and well-paced service. You get your appetizer and enjoy it at a well-timed interval and then receive your entrée with plenty of time to savor the flavors and relax at the same time.
Disappointed. The food was not memorable. The service was bad...wondering if they were under staffed that night. Will not be going back. Too easy to hit better restaurants in the area and have a great meal.
After eating here for 15 years we can attest to the consistency of this restaurant. We’ve celebrated many special occasions at Verjus, either a gathering of friends or just a quiet night out for a good meal for a birthday. The food is always very good and service is top notch with warm, attentive staff. Verjus pay attention to creating a environment where one can really enjoy dining with those at your table and make for a memorable evening.
A real gem in the neighborhood. Food was spot on! Owner was very courteous and friendly. The prix fixe menu is a great value! We are definitely planning to go back!
As always, Verjus made dinner a wonderful experience. The owners make you feel very welcome. The service is friendly and very professional. The food is excellent. Everything is superlative.
very nice food. the service is exceptional. very friendly staff and owner. pleasant experience
Our meals were done perfectly. The service is very friendly and operates like a well oiled machine. Our experience was relaxed and unrushed. Although the prices are a bit high, the quality of the food prep is worth it. Love the martinis.
Excellent all around. No complaints. The food is always good. The service is always spot-on, and the music is exactly what I want to hear (jazz and pop). If you like your coffee strong, you're in the right place. I also appreciate the fact that they haven't forget that diners want good bread.
My husband and I enjoyed a lovely, quiet dinner at Verjus this past Thursday evening to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary. The menu is French, though I would not describe my dinner of bronzini on a bed of spinach accompanied by black beluga lentils, which was delicious, as typically French. My husband, on the other hand, ordered veal kidney (rognons de veau) in Dijon mustard sauce, a quintessential French dish, which he enjoyed immensely.
Verjus is owned by a husband/wife team -- he the accomplished chef, she the host and bartender par excellence. If you are looking for a restaurant which epitomizes the concept of gracious dining, has the feel of home, where you can carry on a conversation without straining your vocal cords, and where the food is consistently delicious, then Verjus is for you.
Verjus is our go-to place for special occasions or feeling like we need an escape. It never disappoints!
We recently dined here for Valentines Day. Special occasion, any occasion or no occasion at all, Verjus is ALWAYS a the place to dine.
All of the items on the menu are unlike any you'll find anywhere else. Every bite of your main course, appetizer or desert will be a total delight.
And of course, the wonderful creative cocktails are a must to enjoy before your meal.
We'll be back again on March 11 to celebrate 35 years of living in Maplewood.
Fabulous, as usual.
The food was very good but the decor was outdated and atmosphere way too quiet for my taste. It took us 3.5 hours to finish a 3 course meal mainly due to the fact that they were down one oven. Not their fault, but they didn’t seem apologetic or willing to make up for it in any way. At the end of the 2nd course (which was 3 hours until the meal), we had to ask to order our desserts twice. While the food did not disappoint, all the other negatives result in my not returning there for another meal.
we have dined here several times and always find the atmosphere to be warm and friendly. the restaurant itself is very lovely. The food is always very well prepared and delicious. They never disappoint. I highly recommend Verjus. Try it you'll like it!!!
This is a slow down and relax type of restaurant. Food comes out at its own pace. If you have good company you won’t notice. The food was really tasty. Presentation is a little old could jazz it up a little but it did not impact the flavors or desire to eat it. The price is on the high side so it is not a once a week affair. I had the escargot and hangar steak. Both perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes are piped onto the plate so that is a little old school to me and were too smooth. Not really my style. That steak could have used a nice rough mash of Yukon gold potatoes with some fresh herbs. Anyway well worth it.
Overrated and overpriced. Lit up like a 7-11. The casserole was ridiculously bad but the branzino and escargot were delicious.
Verjus continues to serve food at a higher level. We went on an" Italian Bistro" night. On these nights your choices are limited to 3or 4 appetizers , dinners, and desserts. It does not seem to matter. You can pick any and not be disappointed. My dinner of Berkshire pork tenderloin literally melted in my mouth. My wife had a steak which was equally as good. We will be back.
Once again we had an amazingly exquisite and delicious dinner. The branzino was to-die-for! Great cocktails, yummy desserts, great value! Such a gem tucked away in Maplewood! I always look forward to eating at Verjus!
Food and service were both excellent. Very friendly staff and a nice relaxing calm atmosphere for a small get together.
Always a good meal here. They have special nights, we went on Bistro night. Great 3 course meal, good selections, good portions, nice Amuse Bouche. Great price/quality. Highly recommend.
Jane was a wonderful host and we felt like we were dining in her living room. The food was outstanding. I cannot believe we just found Verjus!
Verjus never disappoints. Love their French dishes, but last Friday was German night and once again everything was delicious -- from the onion potato rolls through to the apple strudel -- and everything in between (sauerbraten, schnitzel).
Understaffed. Had to pour my own wine. Plates not cleared quickly. Fine dining and casual service. The staff should be trained on the wine and how to treat customers as if they are fine dining. Fine dining prices without a fine dining experience
I always very much enjoy Verjus. The food is so good, I leave with a smile on my face.
We enjoyed the delicious pork chops with chestnut puree. My bass was ok but a little bland. Service was a little slow, considering there was only one other table besides ours.
Delicious French food - classics with a twist. The crisp of the day was perfect. Good service too. And they have a parking lot.
It was an off night for usually solid restaurant. Two hours for dinner (and we didn’t order dessert.) Waiting 40 minutes between appetizer and dinner was a problem.
Definitely will go back
My only complaint is that I requested a
vegetarian option for one member of our party when I made advance reservations and the menu had none
A plate of vegetables doesn’t cut it
Excellent food - especially our French favorites -Beef Bourguignon & Tart Tatin
We decided to give Verjus a try based on its mostly positive reviews and the fact that it has appeared on NJ Monthly’s list of the 25 best restaurants in the state for a few years now. Our experience was extremely positive and the food and service were top notch. The wine list was quite reasonable and there was nothing to suggest that Verjus doesn’t deserve its lofty reputation!
Wonderful restaurant - Chef was most accommodating with requests. Jane was very welcoming and service was great!! The food was delicious. This is now my favorite restaurant. Thank you, Chef Charles & Jane!
Best chef in New Jersey. Food is incredible. Excellent cocktails and wine list. A meal at Verjus always pleases. Enjoy!!
Great food, super friendly owners
A totally delicious creatively prepared dinner. Every item on the menu is superb!!!!
Excellent cocktails are a great way to begin and a wonderful wine list enhances what ever you decide to have for dinner: fish/seafood, beef and of course Charlies roast duck.
AND-nobody in the area makes duck like Charlie. All other items, both appetizers and main course and desserts are oh so good!
It's often hard to choose from the tasty selection of appetizers, main course items AND deserts.
We've been here for birthdays, anniversaries, mother's days, valentine's day and other special occasions, as well as our recent visit for no other reason than to enjoy a superb meal.
We look forward to returning soon.
Coming to Verjus is always special. Our party of 4 ordered the beef bourguignon and the filet of sole which we all agreed was very tasty. The service was excellent, and we had ample time to savor the meal and enjoy good conversation. Jane is an excellent hostess.
Definitely would recommend to others. Good value for a classy meal!
Verjus is an intimate French-inspired restaurant with a varied and creative menu. Once or twice a month on Sunday evenings they have "dinner and a movie" with a prix fixe menu and a classic movie -- this week it was The Lady Vanishes. The mushroom bisque and crab cakes were excellent. Even though there were some technical difficulties, the staff made it a wonderful evening.
This is a wonderful French restaurant. Also outstanding cocktails.
3 of the Red wines on list not available. Sauerbraten not marinated long enough for authentic taste. Duck tough and bland
Verjus continues to deliver excellent food, lovely quiet atmosphere, and lovely staff...we are repeat customers when we want a special meal, or just a night out to treat ourselves...it never disappoints!
