Verjus Restaurant - New Jersey
Delicious meal with fresh seasonal ingredients prepared perfectly. Service was outstanding, even the owner came by and remembered us from months ago. All in all a delightful evening.
An oasis. The quiet music contributed to the very relaxing ambiance. We ordered the bluefish and sea scallops. Both were expertly prepared. The usual mesclun salad was enhanced with endive and the shrimp cocktail was a very generous portion. The only downside was the wait between the courses, about a half hour between the first courses and mains.
Verjus is just the right place to go for very good food, a good wine list, and marvelous service that makes you feel like they want you to come back, again and again.
Never fails. Always a great dining experience with delicious food prepared perfectly by the chef and a gracious staff who are attentive without being intrusive. The Friday night weekly themed menu is not only reasonably priced but has plenty of dishes to choose from. A+
We love Verjus! Hands down the best restaurant in the area!
Excellent cuisine made with care and style, adopting traditional French style with the chef's own touch. The house cocktails are an inventive addition.
Always a pleasure. Atmosphere is great. Servers are attentive and the food is great. Would recommend to anyone looking for a pleasant, relaxing evening (with great food) at a reasonable price. Have been a regular for years, and can say (without reservation) ambiance and quality has never wavered.
We went on a Friday for the three course Shore Dinner which was outstanding. I had their delicious New England clam chowder followed by the lobster 🦞 thermodore entree with their to die for Verjus fries and summer squash. Dessert was excellently prepared blueberry crepes with whipped cream. My husband had gravlax (cured salmon wrapped in thinly sliced cucumber and a mustard sauce)for his appetizer, skate wing for his main course and he also had the delicious blueberry crepes for dessert. Everything was really, really good! Wait staff was excellent.
Our go to restaurant close to home. Great food, good wine prices and menu which always has great dishes. Not the boring steak, chicken and salmon most serve.
I don't understand why this place isn't filled to capacity every night. Fabulous food in a lovely tasteful setting at a fair price. Uniformly excellent.
Food was amazing. The best escargot I have ever had. Very calm and quiet atmosphere.
We thought the food and service were excellent. A little pricey, however worth the quality.
Verjus has been a mainstay in Maplewood forever, and their service and food quality never waiver. They are consistent in their offerings, their service, their ambiance, and overall quality. Would highly recommend.
A French jewel right here in Maplewood! Their bistro nights are wonderful. I recommend it for every occasion.
Had a quiet birthday dinner here the other night. The restaurant was mostly empty and very quiet. The host was very friendly and eager to make a special experience for us. The food was amazing. Will come here for many more special occasions in the future.
My wife and I have dined here on many occasions and always leave more than than satisfied. The food and service are suburb.
Best brunch ever! Delicious! Wonderful service! We love Verjus!
It’s just a wonderful place—service, food, attentive
Pure hospitality! Soft lighting, jazz music, relaxing ambiance and the most perfectly cooked food! Can’t get better.
The food, as usual, was excellent and the service and friendliness of the staff was excellent.
Hidden jewel! We had such a nice time. Foods are excellent and service is great. We highly recommend this place.
Superb food and service. Every dish was exquisite and service was very friendly. Considering quality price was reasonable. Strongly recommend for special occasions
Reliably delicious & gracious.
Delicious food in a friendly, refined atmosphere. Lovely!
We went for the Sunday brunch. The service was outstanding and the food was flavorful and fresh. It is real food, made from scratch with seasonal ingredients. The desserts were wonderful. We had rhubarb ginger ice cream, lavender creme brûlée, an amazing chocolate almond cake.....We were a party of 5 and everyone was very happy with our meals, including a very picky 4 yr old. We are absolutely going back.
Food was excellent yet the very limited menu does not induce a return visit in the near future.
This is a local gem -- a Parisian bistro in our backyard.
Friendly hosts and good food, with a well-selected and affordable wine list, make for pleasant dining.
Had a lovely dinner at Verjus for my wife’s Birthday. Mushroom soup and mesculin salad for starters. We shared the scallops over pasta in a white mushroom sauce, and the hanger steak medium rare. The steak was delicious as were the french green beans and mashed piped potatoes. The seasonings from the salad to the entrees were perfect. Thanks for the great service Verjus!
We've eaten at Verjus for years and it is consistently excellent. Dining is leisurely and the owners are committed to training a young staff to be servers in high end restaurants, so the service can be not perfect, but always very good and well meaning. (personally I will always forgive less than perfect, but well meaning, service and much prefer it to technically perfect, but snotty). The food is always excellent, and the wine list very good.
Amazing food every time. And the best cocktails to found bar none. If you ever see the skate wing on the menu do yourself a favor and order it.
Another memorable evening at Verjus!
The food is delicious without being pretentious. The service and atmosphere are gracious - welcoming and attentive to details. We look forward to our next visit.
wonderful hostess and waitstaff as well as good food. would like more traditional french options on menu.
1. No ability to handle food allergies. Their solution is to provide poached food "seasoned with salt and pepper". Daughter w allergies ordered salad off the menu, but asked that they not include egg & cheese (her allergens), but keep the avocado & bacon. They served her plain romaine. When we asked where the avocado & bacon went, they returned w avocado, but had "run out" of bacon. This was a menu item and others at our table had bacon on salads! They then OFFERED daughter sorbet for dessert, but, alas, it had "melted". Ridiculous. They should be embarrassed. My poor kid was treated so badly.
2. The owner/hostess was horribly rude to all of us. I called to see if we could come 15 minutes early ("if you have to" she snarled), when my husband asked for sauce for our daughter's naked fish and suggested, "maybe a teriyaki?" to which she snapped, "this is a FRENCH restaurant!"
3. The food is stuck in 1979. Old school French. Overcooked. Gloppy sauce.
4. The waitstaff was excellent. Professional. Polite. I feel sorry for them given how cranky the owner/hostess is.
Excellent choices on their prix fixe menu. And the owner even stops by to chat!
Our meal was delicious, and the service was very attentive.
Our first visit to Verjus and it was a really nice evening. We started our meal with a great bread and delightful tasting pickled cucumber and red onion salad. We shared crab cakes and a frisee salad, both were enjoyable. Our entrees were Peking duck and a Berkshire pork chop. The duck was tasty but we prefer the skin a little crispier. My pork chop had a savory flavor and was cooked well. My only criticism was that there was an abundance of thick fat around most of the meat, which I would have liked trimmed leaner. The service was cordial and attentive, and the owner, a delightful woman, engaged us in stimulating conversation over cups of coffee and a superb lemon ice cream. It was a wonderful evening.
My wife and I made reservations after a show at NJPAC as part of our anniversary celebration. We were promptly greeted by the an owner/manager who made us feel very much welcomed.
This was a night of firsts for us as we had never dined in a French restaurant before. Escargot, skate wings and a few of the sides were new to both of us. One taste and we knew we made the right decision to step outside our culinary comfort zones. Serving sizes were adequate in that we were satisfied when the meal was finished. Just enough to make us feel full but not as if we'd over eaten. I must say we were surprised at the size of the crab cake appetizer. It consisted of two good sized crabcakes that contained just enough filler to hold everything together and was served with a modest sized salad.
The service was fantastic. Staff were attentive and quick to take care of any additional requests. Most importantly, at least for us, the staff did not seem overbearing. We were able to enjoy our meal without feeling as though someone was hovering over us or trying to rush us along.
Overall we had wonderful dining experience and got to taste some excellent cuisine outside our normal fare. Certainly a restaurant that we would return to in the future.
We had the most delicious dinner at Verjus the other night. Everything was perfect: from the friendly welcome, to the excellent cocktail, to a truly wonderful dinner. Special delight was their asparagus salad with blood orange - it was perfect. We both had the scallops and loved them. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Still absolutely the best in the SO/MW area; along with Lorena's.
A perfect evening! Never disappoints! The special Friday night menu was well-executed.
