Vergina Ratings and Reviews
Is It Dishonesty or Incompetence?
The first visit, in December 2017, asked for the $20.00 bottle of wine advertised on the online menu. The waiter knew nothing about it, checked with the manager who went online to verify, (as if I would make that up), then sent it to our table.
The second visit, in January 2018, when presented with our bill, I was charged $44.00 for the wine I ordered, which was clearly listed for $32.00 on the online menu.
Again, the manager went online to verify my claim.
When presented with the corrected bill we paid and left.
It was only when I got home, and totaled up my bill, did I discover I had been charged an additional $8.00 for a vegetable we did not order, and I have the bill to prove it.
Clearly, there are aspects of both our visits to Vergina that we can commend and condemn. But they would be only our opinions, subject to confirmation or rebuttal.
Overcharging and misrepresenting items on your bill are facts, that leaves little open to interpretation, save, dishonesty or deceit.
If this is the perceived intent, and, as I'm told, the New Management is about to change the restaurants' name, might I suggest, "Ali Baba's &", (just kidding?).
To end it all:
This was a "Birthday" visit with great service by "Marcello", whom I'm certain,(by now), is known by every tourist and resident of Naples. Perhaps, a bronze statue of him holding a tray in the entryway would add to the recognition of his meritorious service which, he so richly deserves.
Expect a mixed bag of experiences if you dine here "in season", from awesome to awful.
Food was very good. 2 of us had the steak special. Personally I would prefer a thicker cut. It was tender and tasty. One person had lasagna and 4th had the 4 cheese pear pasta. Both said their food was excellent. Deserts, we had crewmen brûlée (average) and tiramisu) excellent. Yes, we would/will return.
Not as good as it used to be. Our server said it was in the process of an ownership and name change. Menu was not as varied and good as before. Too few side dishes all served with the same main course (risotto and broccoli rabe). Our server was inexperienced and unable to answer some questions about the menu, and brought out a chicken dish when I ordered veal. Probably won't go back after this place had been a favorite for more than a decade.
The outdoor table for New Year’s Eve was nice — quiet, private, high class, warm (it was a cool evening). But, this restaurant is like a mullet: business in the front and party in the back! It was loud and crowded in the back/bar! I was surprised when I used the restroom in the back.
Our Pre-Fix meal was good — many options. The bolognase was not attractive or overly delis ious. The tiramisu was so light and the perfect end to the meal. The coffee was good.
I got a lobster meal. Had no way to crack the claw. Asked waiter how i am suppose to crack the shell? He said yah,we forgot to order crackers. Are you kidding me. A server from the restaurant was serving at a table behind me. One of those servers elbowed me in the head. I waited for him to turn around and apologize. Nope, did not happen. As he was walking away i stopped him. I said, do you think when you knock someone in the head with your elbow, you would apologize. Told my server, yah lip service. Told a manager, i was told oh my, but he is such a good guy. I don’t care if he is a good guy. How about him knocking me in the head. Lip service. Was told to email general manager. A joke.
This was a New Year’s Eve disaster dinner. Firstly there was NO mention of a pre fixed dinner anywhere until we were seated. The only positive was our waiter.. it was an overpriced, terrible experience. 3 of the 4 of us ordered the lobster ravioli. None of us saw the tiny print that it was a half lobster (shells not cracked) smothered in a red sauce of some sort with no taste other than glue. The wine (first choice was not available!)? Was overpriced. Think they mark their prices up just because they can. The salad was drowning in desssing. We will never return and never recommend it! $375 per couple for disgusting food and overpriced wine (1 bottle only!)
It was New Years Eve so it was a set menu. Unfortunately, the menu did not list its prices. I did not ask in advance so I was shocked when my husband told me that our half of the bill was $250!! A three course meal and a glass of wine for each of us. Last year we ate at the restaurant right next door and this did not happen to us. I’m disappointed and will probably not return.😔
We’ve had multiple positive experiences at Vergina before but our last experience on Saturday was terrible. We didn’t get our salads for an hour and 15 min after we ordered, we didn’t get our meal for another hour after that, the manager told us they’d “fix the problem and watch our table” and we never saw him again, we were served cold coffee - everything that could have gone wrong, did.
Had an enjoyable lunch on the recommendation of a friend. Certainly well worth the short drive from our resort and a most enjoyable lunch. The food was great, the ambiance just as we desired, and the service most attentive. We were told by others that we should come back in the evening for the lively atmosphere and live entertainment. Will definitely make this an annual stop as we visit Naples on our return vacations.
We made a reservation to enjoy their happy hour (Half price on all food menu). When the bill arrived we were charged full price. We pointed out the error to our waiter and were told that the half price was not applicable during the Christmas Holidays. No where on their web site did it indicate that the Happy Hour was not honoured during the Christmas holidays. Another restaurant on their web site indicated their exclusion dates. Asked if they made Spanish Coffee and ordered one. When it arrived it was stone cold. Asked the waiter why and was told someone had turned off the burner to the Coffee. If that was the case why serve it or not make a fresh pot. The food was ho hum. Even at half price I would not return. If I'm going out for dinner I like a meal that is really good and enjoyable. I could have made a better meal at home, so this was no treat.
My wife and I have been to Virgina numerous times prior to this recent visit. In the past the food was always fantastic and the service excellent. Sad to say neither the food nor the service was very good this time. Overall the food was bland and not served hot. The salad was stale tasting. Our waiter was horrible. He seemed very hard of hearing and had communication challenges. He also failed to manage our order. For everything we ordered from drinks or salads to the main courses we had to ask him multiple times to check on where our order stood. It was obvious he had failed to properly enter what we ordered and in what order items should come out by the illogical sequence items shows up. Would we visit again? Sure but with a very cautious attitude and lower expectations.
Christmas Eve dinner. Expected service to be a little slow because of the holiday. It was extremely slow and unprofessional. Waited almost 15 minutes to get a drink order in. My husbands meal did not come with the rest of the family’s instead of the waiter coming over and explaining there had been a mix up we watched our waiter argue with the kitchen staff from our seats. 15 minutes later he ate his entree as we were finishing ours. No apology no explanation. We will not return. It was pricey for the service and quality of food. Helpings were not large. The best meal at the table. Was the spaghetti.
Booked for Christmas Eve dinner with my family. We were seated right next to the open kitchen entrance which was like a freeway and very loud. There were other empty tables at better locations that went unfilled the entire time we were there. The management wasn't prepared for the onslaught of customer as evidenced by the very slow service and even slower kitchen. It took an hour and five minutes before we received our order, some of which was only lukewarm at not at the appropriate temperature. Overall the experience was not a positive one which leads me to rate it poorly. Our waiter was overwhelmed and his frustration was passed on to us. I wish I'd booked at Campiello down the street; we had dinner there earlier this week and it was fantastic. This place needs to rethink the logistics of seating near the kitchen because the space also had a funky smell to it.
We have lived in Naples for 12 years we have tried all the restaurants here including Vergina 5-6 years ago. They are now the worst restaurant in Naples we won’t be back.. the waiter was useless, the food cold after waiting 75 minutes for it to arrive. After waiting for a new round of food to arrive, it was still cold! The bill took 4 tries to arrive and Vergina charging twice for the entees that were cold twice. It took 2 hours and 45 minutes to be totally turned off. There were other tables having the same issues as we were with cold food and slow service. It was the worst dining experience in our life.
This was our third or fourth time there. Each time there’s always something off. Once it was service. Just awful. This time, on Christmas Eve, I’d have to say the food was better st an splice Garden. Very blah. We never got any bread either the entire meal. Plus my husbands credit card somehow got left behind. His responsibility but shouldn’t the waiter st least check? Won’t go again. Overpriced for the food and service.
Not sure if it was because it was Christmas Eve, they kept saying the kitchen was overwhelmed, but that is the time you need to shine, otherwise, if it is too much - close for the night. We had been there before and thought it was good so made a reservation for 6:45, arrived a little early - plenty of empty tables & we were seated. The waiter came quickly for our order - the one and only time we saw him. We requested no onions on one salad and added olives - the other salad no cheese - salads came with onions - also they said they did not have olives - the other salad came with cheese. When ordering the entree we my son requested his salmon be blackened - the waiter said he could not make any requests as the kitchen was busy - fine then grilled as on the menu. We waited 40 minutes between the salad and entree - still many empty tables - finally the meal comes and it is lukewarm and no flavor to the meals. The maitre d came and saw we were unhappy. I still fully expected to pay for our meal and then leave - he insisted it was on the house and asked us to give them another chance at another time. Perhaps I will as he was gracious about it but either they were understaffed in the kitchen and on the floor or because it is a holiday evening they knew they would be busy and didn't care - I am not sure. The veal from my dinner was tough - for the two bites I ate so I would not order that dish again.
This is a busy time of year and there are plenty of restaurants on 5th Ave, so they do need to up their game if they want to continue.
